Considering the extreme youth of this team I don't know that the roster will be largely different next year. It looks like Caldwell already did the tear down, and now we'll have another large rookie class to go with the dozen from last year. That's why I think the vets on this list are gone, they've already been effectively replaced.

Yup, 24 players out of the 53 man roster were rookies, or 2nd year players. That number jumped to like 32 when you included 3rd year players. It was the youngest roster in the entire NFL. Add 11 more draft picks this year and it's going to stay really young.

The tear down has been done and was started by Caldwell this past off season/season. We just have to hope whoever does the drafting moving forward doesn't screw it all up in these next 2 years, or we'll be doing it all over again soon enough.

If we're talking cuts as in players still under contract I'll say:

Doug Middleton
Lerentee McCray
Gardner Minshew
Dontavius Russell
Brandon Rusnak

Possible: Brandon Linder (9M salary, no cap hit if cut)

My thoughts at cuts for those under contract for next season...
(ps is I think goes to practice squad, not initial 53)

RB Ozigbo
TE Davis (ps)
OL Wallace-Sims (ps)
DE Gotsis
DE McCray
DT Bryan
DT Reid
DT Russell
CB Melvin
CB Meeks
CB Barcoo (ps)
DS Rusnak
DS Middleton

*this guesstimated list does not include ERFA, RFA, and UFA that also will not be re-signed.

QB,LT, RG, both safeties, corner, TE, DT....

Now they may keep some of these guys for depth but as of now, those look like obvious upgrades. Now maybe they can’t upgrade all of them this off season but hey.... Jags can try.

Lawrence, Robinson, rookie and FA, FA, Oliver, rookie

As for LT, I think Robinson is better than any rookie.

Your list looks pretty good but I think they'll keep Ozigbo in some capacity.

Abry Jones & Jarrod Wilson should be at the top of the list.

Jones has been around since day 1 of the Gus Bradley era; has an inflated contract and isn't even a starter. I don't care what anyone says, this is exactly the type of guy you purge to change a culture; we had to trade for Dareus to start over him in 2017 to fix the run defense, Abry wasn't good then and he isn't good now. Lets get some new blood at DT and some new leadership on the Defensive side of the ball.

Jarrod Wilson is the last remaining member of the group of DB's that went out the night before the London Game and were arrested for that 4am nightclub altercation in the UK. He's never struck me as anything more than "Just a guy" and there's no reason he should be paid an inflated contract to not even be an average Safety. I don't think he's a good culture fit, and I don't think he's good enough of a player that merits keeping around.
Championship Formula:

1) Draft Trevor Lawrence!
2) Play good physical Defense!
3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy!
4) ???
5) Blank #2
6) CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

I don't think Minshew will be cut unless they find some other backup. I doubt they keep Glennon or Luton over him as the #2.

Minshew is too cheap and has too much value to just get cut. If he goes somewhere else, it would be through a trade.

I believe they will trade Minshew for a 4th or 5th rounder.

I know this is a "cuts" thread, but it got me thinking about the back up QB position.

I think we should bring in an experienced Vet to back up Lawrence. Help ease him into the NFL way of things behind the scenes. How to prepare like a pro etc etc.

Ryan Fitzpatrick will be a FA this off season. I think he'd be the perfect guy to bring in to back up Lawrence and show him the ropes.

Mike Glennon was brought in to be that guy. Depending on how he performed he could be retained. I think you know but his performance on the field doesn't have to be pro bowl, it just has to be good enough. It's what he did in the QB room that matters.

Glennon is trash and he was on a 1 year deal. He's a FA and should not be brought back.

This is my line of thinking as well.

That's probably more likely actually, but I don't think he'll be here either way.

Minshew is a veteran with experience and a great work ethic, great attitude, intelligent, and a student of the game. He is also a guy who has experienced success and failure.

There is absolutely no reason why he couldn't be a good mentor.

People act like there are these great successful players out there just waiting to be a back up. They just don't exist.

Minshew is about as good as you will find and is about as cheap as you will find.

The only issue is that the backup usually has to have a similar style to the starter since he might have to take his place, and I don't think GM15 is anything like TLaw, but we'll see. Everything else you said I agree with you.

Hasn't Meyer in the past said he likes big dudes who can run? If so anybody who isn't an entrenched starter that is undersized or a little slow may be in more trouble

Maybe. I'd given even odds on him getting cut since he doesn't check the usual boxes. I could be wrong though.

It'll only be his 3rd year in the league..

Plus I didn't say anything about cutting him. They're going to go into camp with at least 3 or 4 QBs and he should be one of them. Give him every chance to compete for the back up job, but I'd still like to see a Vet brought in to compete for it as well.

I don't think it would make sense to cut Gardner. Unless maybe something happened off the field to warrant that. (Which I hope doesn't happen) I do believe that the team could get a pick for him. They could get a higher pick than where he was drafted. I do believe he will net higher than where he was drafted (6th round pick).

I am interested in seeing what happens now that Urban Meyer is the coach. The Jags could move Gardner and get an older veteran QB to backup Trevor. If so I do believe they will find a trade partner for Gardner. If he's traded I hope he ends up in a good situation. Steelers, Washington Football Team and Patriots are some teams he could go to.

I think you could find a better possible cut than our top olimeman.  That would be a pretty dumb move imo and 9 mil a year isnt that much for one of the better interior lineman in the league that can play G or C
