What I am saying, however, is that this wasn't a typical May tryout.
To be clear, I don't blame Tebow at all for requesting the tryout.
Jimmy Smith (and his mom, IIRC) had to ask TC for him to get a tryout by sending him a package, including tape. If Tebow still has the itch to play, I don't blame him from exploring all possibilities.
I'm just surprised he GOT the tryout diven the totality of circumstances.
I get you Bullseye. On one hand I dont blame Tebow. This must be like winning the lottery. 34 years old, baseball careers not gone how he likes and someone will give him a shot in the NFL again? I get why hes taking it
But that then leads me to ask why would Urban, in one of his first moves as an NFL HC make a move like this. It stinks of nepotism and theres a whole country of guys to pick from, theres no one else who could play TE? The talking heads have been laughing and trashing us all week over this. We have Trevor freaking Lawrence, we should be looking for the next Kelce.
Let me put it this way, your working your job and your boss says someone needs a promotion. Hows it going to go down when you give it to your friend who doesnt even work there?
I can only hope hes cut in the first week and we can get back to talking sensible football again. (emphasis added)
Exactly. The optics on this are horrible...almost as bad as signing the strength coach from Iowa.
I think Marty pointed out that each time Tebow was at the team facilities trying out, Meyer was elsewhere. Is Tebow being forced on him by Khan? Now new coaches will bring in his guys, in part because they know the schemes he will employ, in part because the players may have the talent that could help the team, and in part because the players may help him establish credibility in the locker room.
But I'm not sure Tebow accomplishes any of these things. Maybe he knows what schemes he will run from his time with Meyer at Florida, but that was long ago. Meyer may have tweaked his offense some since he left Florida and adding experienced NFL coordinators. Does he have the talent to play TE after all this time off? He seems to have a build that could lend itself to an H-Back role, and he might have some TE speed...but that talent not only has to have eight years of rust knocked off, but also has to be refined to have enough proficiency to be among the best 53 players on the roster. Finally, to the extent some players or coaches may have doubts about Tebow's merits to even get the workouts to begin with, UM lose credibility in the locker room, and it goes down if Tebow doesn't perform and remains on the roster. If Khan is forcing Tebow on UM to sell more tickets, then that doesn't reflect well on UM's authority in the locker room, either.

Meyer said it won't be his offense but the offense will have some college style plays mixed in.

I don't think Khan would need to force Tebow on Meyer at all... I doubt you will find anyone who is a bigger fan of Tebow than Meyer.
Maybe Meyer's absence at the workouts is an effort to make this more of a football decision, rather than an emotional one. By taking himself out of that part of the equation (watching Tebow's workouts), he may be at least trying to place some reliance on his coaches' opinions of Tebow's current state as a potential asset.
Regardless, the whole dalliance doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I have enjoyed reading this thread though

Good points as always and Khan keeps saying how important the bottom line is. I had to laugh when Lawrence first arrived, you could almost see the $$ signs in Khans eyes!! For years hes talked about needing an elite QB which will improve the team and increase attendance. I wouldnt put it past him to have someone close mention Tebow and if that will increase attendance by even 1 person then it's a win right?

I believe Bevell and Schottenheimer may add some tweaks here and there, but I'm led to believe that it will be Meyer's offense.

If it makes Khan happier here...then yes. But I don't think it improves the TE room one iota. Ertz may soon become available. He would improve the TE room.

You can do that at a movie theater, at a political rally, and you can do that at a football stadium.
But when the guy is in charge of your government, you have to keep paying attention to him.
So no, Tebow is not at all like Trump and that's a pretty lazy comparison.
