We knew the first overall pick was ours and that we'd likely use it on Trevor Lawrence. Once we found out Urban Meyer would become the coach, whether we like the UM hire or not, we all wanted to see the new era, especially QB Trevor Lawrence. Now at last, we get our first glimpse of this promising new era in game action. Thank you, sir. 2. As I agreed in an earlier response, the underneath stuff killed us. While it is better than being killed by downfield stuff, it still needs to be controlled. I think that if Watson doesn't play for Houston, either Taylor or whoever else plays for the Texans will try to play it safe and attack underneath. Knowing Cullen's propensity to blitz, it's not out of the question that other teams will utilize underneath passing to counteract it. We have to clean that up. 3. Agreed completely. I didn't think the team had enough run-pass balance. While I completely understand the faith UM has in TL, TL can only justify that if he has help. That help can only come with better personnel and with playcalling. Unless we somehow can find another Ben Coleman on waivers, the personnel isn't likely to change. But we need more balance offensively to give TL the help he needs...because the OL isn't going to if Taylor is the starting RT. 4. & 5 Based upon what he did early last year, I'm sot surprised that he is capable of this level of play. His innate talent isn't the question in my mind. My concern is his intangibles. If Henderson and Jones are healthy and playing, we'd have a very solid and capable 1-4 CB group all capable of playing effective man coverage. All of those guys showed some good things. 6. I am with you on the nervous breakdown thing. But I am more fearful TL might have a breakdown-nervous or physical-if Taylor is permitted extended play as the starter. I still wish we had taken Jenkins or Brown, but I'll have to be content with Little being inserted as a starter at T for now. 8. The depth at WR is an argument against Thomas. To a large degree I am surprised we can get so much production from guys who weren't added until June...and as late as August. I wanted to see more of Josh I...because I have read some good things about him. I think Dorsett is toast at this point, and I think Johnson isn't far behind even though I think he offers far more. If he's cut, Johnson is a guy we will look back on and wish we had made room on the roster for him. 9. I'm not concerned about Lambo. I just need him to stay healthy. Cook was outstanding. 10. Kane wanted substantive Tebow discussion. I said he really didn't warrant much substantive discussion. A look at his lack of contribution in the game and the comments in this thread shows why I feel that way. Nobody but Tebow homers thought he had a serious shot at making the final roster, and nothing he did last night changed that impression. 13. I had high hopes for Johnson, too...and perhaps he could turn things around enough to realize those hopes for us. But I have always suspected that he was not a UM type of receiver. Taylor must be benched...but I'm beyond that at this point. not only does he need to be benched, he needs to be moved inside, even if it means adding a camp cut to replace him at RT. He can't handle space at all and his size doesn't ever seem to translate into power. If he could have replicated Jermey Parnell or the guy we signed from Baltimore, he'd be fine. But he hasn't come close. I'm glad football season is here though. I like what TL presents thus far. I like what the secondary presents. I think if Henderson has it together, this could be the deepest secondary we've had. Whereas we had no strengths last year, I think the secondary represents an area of strength right now, as does WR. There is some basis for hope we are a better team this year, but it's far from a complete team. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Why are people making such a big deal out of things like run pass balance and play calling. No one gameplays for Preseason Game 1. Most of the time the plays are scripted with minimal deviation even if they defense is giving look that would normal result in a check or audible to different play.
Unless we know what the Jaguars were trying to work on for each play and series, we will have not way to judge much of what was seen other than basically awareness and if players won doing their job verses the Browns personnel. On top of all that, Meyer has never had a real preseason before "where everything is made up and the points don't matter", because for the semi-equivalent games in college, the points still matter in those games. Of course nobody game plans for preseason. Nevertheless, one of the goals of the preseason is to get through the preseason healthy. Having an imbalanced approach when you have an OL not adept at pass blocking invariably increases the risk to the QB. Furthermore, I still don't know what offensive approach the team will take during the regular season. I don't know if the imbalance will continue into the regular season, or if the imbalance in this case was attributable to the team trying to achieve particular evaluation objectives. Worst to 1st. I was sitting in the stands, so I had a different view than most of you. I haven't watched the TV version yet. But, I would say this: that was a really boring game. The biggest cheer was before our first play on offense, when the camera showed that TL was starting. After that, things went downhill.
I try not to make too much of it, because we have so many new players, new coaches, and new systems. We're like a very talented expansion team. We did stop the run well. But we didn't get much pressure on the passer. Some of our DBs look very good. Especially Sydney Jones and CJ Henderson. But the offense sputtered all night. Trevor held the ball too long on a couple of plays. Minshew was ineffective. After that, it was a bunch of guys who aren't going to make the team anyway. It's hard to evaluate, because no one was in the game long enough to have any continuity. On one play that went for a Cleveland TD, Tyson Campbell did exactly what the pre-draft scouting reports said about him: he had great coverage, but lost track of the ball. I think maybe we should just write this one off as a trial run- our first action against another team, figuring out what works and what doesn't. By the way, here's something interesting. I didn't go to any games last year, so I don't know if this is new or not, but if you want to take the shuttle to the stadium, you have to download an app and pay through the app. They don't take cash or credit cards. Also, maybe I'm just getting old, but the music in the stadium is unpleasantly loud. I'm think I'm going to need a lot of alcohol to tolerate it. Nice write up as usual Bullseye. 2 things for me about yesterday
1- Its preseason game 1 and vanilla playcalling and we all know that but i liked the 3-4 D. We rushed with 5 on pretty much every play which i like but also cost us. The Browns started throwing screens and it just totally takes the rush out. If the DB's are dropping deep in coverage we have 2 LB's having to cover a LOT of grass. We tried dropping a S down to help but just something i think they will be working on and hopefully start seeing it all come together at some point. 2- I was concerned about the O line and i see the same unit that massively struggled last year, and the year before. I said in the gameday thread i just no improvement or progression. They struggle with the same pass rush moves they always have, OT's getting beaten outside and inside. These are things you expect the group to spend a week fixing and see how they are trying to fix it the following Sunday. It was great to finally see Lawrence but his first snap was a sack/fumble he managed to recover. Thats the big red warning siren for me. We HAVE to protect him. When he had a clean pocket and time he made a great throw and Marvin Jones with a great catch. I dont want him to go the way of QB's getting hit so much they start seeing ghosts and arent looking downfield but where the hit is coming from.
(08-15-2021, 07:59 AM)JagFan81 Wrote: Nice write up as usual Bullseye. 2 things for me about yesterday Agree completely. These are my main concerning takeaways from yesterday. Oline still struggling and pass rush is virtually non-existent. Better QB: check Better Receiving Core: check Better run defense: check If we don't solve the issues of the trenches, we won't be gaining much ground, nor stopping opposing teams from gaining ground.
Robinson ran hard and I am glad they let Carlos Hyde have the chance to run hard even if we didn't see much. I hope Little can be a oline savior because they are our weakest group.
I have a sinking feeling that we are going to repeat the same themes only with a better qb. That is... 1. Wanting to establish the run but giving up because we wear out the defense 2. Getting into obvious passing situations 3. Moaning and Groaning at the lack of progress We need more talent.

My expectations are very low.

The strategy to improve our run defense seems to have worked.
Impressed with the reasonably priced veteran WR talent we added. Mixed bag for the DB, lots of big play potential, but it felt like Cleveland could move the ball through the air easily. I really liked what I saw from CJ and Cisco. The strategy to keep continuity on the OL and Edge didn’t get off to a great start. TE looks bleak, but we knew that. The cult of Tebow was out in force last night. Lots of Jerseys running around. I hope he is cut sooner rather than later. Doesn’t add much on the field, but his fans continue to grate on me.
I thought CJ Beatherd looked good. 13/16. His intermediate passes seemed to have some zing and were accurate.

Preseason games are always boring. Coaches keep the game plan pretty simple in order for players to "knock the rust off" and they don't wanna tip their hat as to what they have dialed up for the regular season as well. Not to mention, for the most part the playing time is dominated by guys who will either be 3rd stringers, have very short NFL careers or will be doing something like selling insurance in the next 6 months. (08-15-2021, 07:59 AM)JagFan81 Wrote: Nice write up as usual Bullseye. 2 things for me about yesterday Thank you, sir. I think combined, both of these show the value of the preseason games. We produced no pass rush last year, and our OL sees the DL and LBs in practice all day every day, going against the same fronts. Now, we go up against a team we haven't played before using a different front. I think whatever false sense of security we may have had either watching the practices or clips of practice or even reading practice reports was shattered by that game, especially since the Browns didn't play their starters. No jaguars fan wants to see the scenarip you envision unfold. I know that's one of the reasons I was pushing to acquire OL throughout the offseason, whether it was Trent Williams in free agency, or guys like Teven Jenkins in the draft. We'll be a four win team this year. It's going to be similar to Cincinnati's last season, barring the QB injury (knock on wood).

I was cautioning that we won't be able to fix everything in one draft, ad we got our first showing what was missing from our rebuild efforts. Yep..sounds about right to me. It is a long way to the top if you want to Rock and Roll. Also, as I left the game and was thinking about our QB I couldn't get that Edda James song "At Last" out of my mind....At last, my QB has come along, my losing days are over and life is like a song....
A new broom always sweeps clean.
There was a lot to be excited about. Plenty of reason to be hopeful. TLaw is the real deal. The Jags have their franchise QB. Keep him healthy and this team has a future
