Every time I see a game on TV the commentators talk about Leftwich being a head coaching candidate.  Is that the Rooney rule too?

No idea, but it is a thing they're going to need to pay lip service to, regardless of whether the talking heads on TV think he should be a head coach or not.

I didn't think about him since I was so focused on offensive head coaches, but the more I let it marinate the more I am warming to the idea of Eberflus. Everyone thinks he's going to be an awesome head coach and rave about his skill and leadership.

I think it is also pretty rare that a guy stays a top option for more than one cycle. Look at the main guys who didn't get jobs last year: Daboll, Brady, Bieniemy types. All of their stars has faded this year to the point that I barely hear anything about them this cycle, if anything. I think it says a lot that he has kept his status despite being under the microscope for another season.

All of that said, he wouldn't be my top choice, but I think if he did wind up being hired it would anger most people around here while I would be perfectly happy with it. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he gets in the room with Shad and crew and greatly impresses them.

With Josh McDaniels set to take the head coaching job with the Indianapolis Colts, Eberflus was hired to be his defensive coordinator. Though when McDaniels ultimately withdrew his acceptance and decided to stay in New England, Eberflus stayed on as defensive coordinator when Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator Frank Reich was hired as the Colts' head coach.

Though Eberflus and Reich had never met, Colts' General Manager Chris Ballard "was very persuasive and very strong in his conviction [to Reich] that Matt was the right guy."[9] Eberflus was credited with instilling an "ultra-demanding culture of hustle, discipline and teamwork" that ultimately helped turn the Colts around from a 4-12 team in 2017 to a 10-6 playoff team, reaching the AFC Divisional Playoff Round.

Inheriting a defense that finished No. 30 in the NFL in both scoring defense (25.2 points allowed per game) and total defense (367.1 yards allowed per game) in 2017, Eberflus immediately turned the defense around in just one season to rank No. 10 in scoring defense (21.5 points allowed per game) and No. 11 in total defense (339.4 yards allowed per game) in 2018. Impressively, he did so without major personnel changes, as seven of the team's 11 defensive starters were with the club last season.

Eberflus' cultural impact and expertise in player development was put on display throughout the 2018 season, achieving the team's defensive heights without preeminent talent. The team's previous coaching staff advocated for cutting linebacker Anthony Walker last year, but the front office resisted and he was retained.[11] Under Eberflus, Walker became the team's second-leading tackler with 105 on the season (53 solo). Rookie Darius Leonard, a 2nd round pick out of South Carolina State, led the NFL with 163 tackles (93 solo), earning First Team All-Pro Honors and making the All-Rookie Team.

Eberflus' background and "come up" kind of reminds me of Mike Smith.

Again, my concern would be who he has in mind offensively if he were to land the head coaching job.

Would he be able to poach Press Taylor or Mike Groh from Frank Reich and promote them here to run the offense?

If so, it's tempting.

I wonder if anything should be made of the fact that Leftwich wasn't named Arians replacement while he has Covid. Seems to me that if Arians wanted Leftwich to get a shot he would give him a shot (no matter how small). I know it's not a huge deal, but slightly interesting.

Most likely it's so that the OC and DC can continue to do their jobs since the success of the team this year is more important than either of the assistants getting a HC job.

Plus it actually allows Leftwich and Bowles to spend their off time doing their virtual HC interviews as opposed to game planning as the HC.

It has to be a package deal. You need two guys coming over from the same team with a uniformed front under one identity.

Josh would probably make Lawrence competent in year two. Kellen has the potential to be the next Sean McVay. Greg has a proven history of scheming an offense around his QBs strengths.

Caldwell and Smith would also be an interesting pairing. Both have been out of football but have a history of success and could also probably turn this around relatively quickly.

Was previously high on Daboll. Not so much this past month. Leftwich is interesting but is it him or is it Brady? The talent in Tampa is also ridiculous overall. This is not Tampa.

Reid's had some of his coaches succeed but also fold a bit. Not impressed with Nagy, Reich and Pederson had his moment. He's intriguing to an extent but also could have been extremely lucky that year. Bieniemy just doesn't seem legit right now.

Again, however. This has to be a package deal. GM - HC - Staffing. That is the order this must flow this time. Preferably a package deal from the same organization excited with the idea of building around and developing Lawrence into who he was drafted to be.

McDaniels isnt leaving NE. Im pretty sure Kraft ensured him that it will be his job ones Belichick retires.

This is probably the case for Leftwich too. Arians thinks very highly of Byron and I would assume he's retiring when Brady retires, leaving Leftwich to take over at HC. This is just my personal theory, but it lines up.
