I haven't had time to read through all the posts on here, so apologies if this has already been discussed, but does someone mind clarifying something for me? If it was said that Pederson wasn't willing to work with Baalke either....and for some reason we don't hear news of Baalke being gone or Spielman hired to manage over Baalke at least, then why did Pederson end up taking the job?

Two recent OC hires fit that bill, too, in Ken Dorsey and Mike Kafka.

Oddly enough Tony Dungy was a QB in college and played 2 years with the Steelers as DB where he had 3 ints in 1977 and 6 ints in 1978 before being traded to SF where he played 1 year.

Dungy was actually really good with the Steelers and helped them win the SB vs the Cowboys.  not sure how it ended so quickly -- perhaps having the Steelers D around him helped his game tremendously.

Good point. We better hope for Fangio or the linebackers coach rumored from Tampa, Mike Caldwell, as both would keep the 3-4. I'd much prefer Fangio because he's realistically not getting another HC shot, but he's a top-5 D-coordinator.

Agreed. If we go back to a 4-3 defense, we're just creating more problems for ourselves. We brought in new 5 Techniques and NT's last season to make the switch to 3-4. None of them can rush the passer, so we'd need to find a penetrating 3 technique. We'd also have people Roy Robertson-Harris (who we gave a significant contract to) and Jihad Ward, just sitting on the bench with no scheme fit in a 4-3 defense. On top of that we're already thin at LB, no matter what scheme we use. Finding a true MLB would have to be a priority somewhere in the first couple days of the draft. On the interior D-Line, Malcolm Brown and DaVon Hamilton would be great on running downs, but they offer little against the pass.

Personally, it would have been a bad look announcing both at the same time.  This way, the focus is on Pederson and not the Baalke/Spielman organizational structure.  that way, the can later release the news of the Spielman hire and people are just like -- great, another brilliant mind in the organization.

Quite honestly, I'm still not certain why Baalke's rep is so much worse this year than last year, when very few people made a big deal about his hire other than some of his draft selections.  These days, the dude is hated like Charles Manson and Ted Bundy.

Pretty sure no HC has ever won a SB with 2 different teams.... So we got that going for us.

However, with Spielman apparently a done deal (info from a Vikings guy), that gives me more hope this will work.

Vikings built a top 5 roster under Spielman but they just didn't have the QB. Jags have that and now Spielman can work his magic. He's also the guy who laughed at the Eagles for taking Raegor over Jefferson.

I don’t see any way that Pederson takes this job without Spielman’s personal reassurance to Pederson that he’s coming on board. I agree with Hurricane that these announcements are now in the hands of the PR department as far as timing is concerned.

I'm not sure anyone has a major problem with Pederson as a HC. He knows QBs and can really help to develop Trevor (which is the #1 goal). He hired Frank Reich who gets a lot of the credit for that SB run but clearly Doug knows how to find good people. If they end up bringing Spielman in the building, even better.

My issue (and many others issue) stems from the overall terrible hiring process. The Jags looked like they had no clue what they were doing from the start. They asked to interview O'Connell but its like they had no clue they had to wait until after the SB. Why show your cards? The Leftwich situation was terrible. The Biscaccia situation was terrible. Shad leaving to go on vacation in the middle of a search shows he just doesn't care but to top it all off, they still have Baalke.

I really hope Pederson can turn this around and I don't think that's truly going to happen until Baalke is gone.

Why because it didn't happen as quick as we would like it to have happened? Why because rumors about leftwich? It could be that they had a process and following through with that process to get it right.   As far as I'm concerned it's all hearsay.  It's all opinion on what people think or believe happened... so-called reports could or could not be true. I also have to admit that I was getting a little frustrated with how long it was taking but then again I tell myself I don't know what's going on behind closed doors and what their process was... I'm sure they were just trying to get it right.  I find it hard to believe that they "didn't know"  what they were doing...

Even though I mostly agree with you in principle neither Robertson-Harris nor Ward were any good. They shouldn't be a reason to keep the scheme. 4-3 would also utilize Jack better. 

Either way this distiction is mostly misunderstood or overblown since what people mostly complained aboutwith Wash was bend, not break. That's what Belichick does with a 3-4

This team would have Ballsackia as the HC if it wasn't for Spielman coming to Jacksonville late in the process. It's been a disaster but somehow, someway, they ended up with a good situation in Pederson/Spielman.

exactly so how do you know that wasn't one of their plans from the beginning... You don't. How do you know that they didn't know that they couldn't interview Kevin O'Connell... because of a so-called report? that may or may not have been true...maybe they were just putting it out there that they wanted to interview him? either way it seems to be working out
