By Tomorrow we will get a sense of direction for the team in the draft or free agency
|
Tomorrow is the deadline to franchise tag players. If they do not use it on Cam Robinson that tells us they are either comfortable with little or looking to replace him in free agency or the draft. This also tells us how the team see's the previous talent on the team.

This is a rebuild so no reason to start the rebuild with a player we do not plan to keep long term. Either find a free agent, sign Cam to a long term deal if they really believe in him, Grow little, or use the top pick on a LT. Using the franchise tag will just get us right back in the same situation next year. The difference is if we are much better we won't have a high pick to get a LT next season. ![]()

But if we are much better then in that scenario cam probably plays very well and deserves a long term extension. You can’t fix every whole in one season, cams serviceable tag him fill other holes and go after a left tackle next year, it’s very likely we’ll be picking in the top 12 picks (03-07-2022, 07:16 PM)Craigukjag Wrote:(03-07-2022, 07:08 PM)jaguarmvp Wrote: I hope we do not rent him again. The only upgrade in FA that makes sense in terms of value is Armstead. And I don't trust that any of the top tackles in the draft are going to be as good or better than Cam. I'd rather draft a couple of IOL to compete for upgrading what we have there. ![]() Fix the O-Line!

The reason you do this is so Lawrence doesn't die with a somehow worse OL in front of him. It also gives you flexibility in the draft so you don't HAVE to draft Evan Neal. We're basically playing with Monopoly money at this point when it comes to cap space. We already had the most, and now everybody has more than they know what to do with.

If not, we gotta sign Noteboom in free agency, because as bad as Jawaan Taylor is, I don't see anyone SIGNIFICANTLY better in the draft. Penning and Volson are the only 2 OT's I like in this draft class and Penning will be long gone. I certainly don't wanna waste a high round pick on a RT I'm not 100% sold on, but I don't wanna keep Cam Robinson past this coming season either. I'm hoping the 2023 OT class will return to normal and give us the types of quality OT's we're used to. If Penei Sewell and Rashawn Slater were in this draft, they'd both be the top 2 contenders for the #1 overall pick. I even think Darrisaw would be picked ahead of all of the OT's in the 2022 class. Tagging him lets you kick the can on filling a hole for another year while you have a serviceable stop gap. Then you can use the asset you were going to use to fill that hole (the friggin 1st overall pick in the entire draft) to fill a hole that you don't have a serviceable in house option for. PFF had a panel of their guys on with Brugler during the combine and they went through their pre draft rankings of the last three OT classes. They had Neal and Icky behind all of Sewell, Slater, Wirfs, Wills, Becton, and Thomas.

Walker Little showed last year that he's more than capable of starting at LT. No reason to reach for an OT in the draft, or overpay in free agency. Use the cap space to fill true needs like WR and TE, and IOL.

The team has stated they want to re-sign him. If they re-sign him before free agency starts, they could show they want to keep him and use the tag on someone else. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
The show begins...no tag on Cam then all the hacks will again pin us to taking a tackle with the first pick. Tag Cam then the talking heads will assume edge. The season of mis direction begins in ernest.
A new broom always sweeps clean.

Front load the crap out of the thing on the first year. I'm hoping next year's draft class has much better OT prospects like we saw in 2021 and we can actually upgrade the position significantly.
They would be absolute idiots not to tag Cam. You don’t limit your options in draft/fa for no reason by letting your best lineman leave for nothing

Coach said that he wants to keep players that are good. The jags always lose any talent. Only two good players I can think of at the moment is chark jr and cam robinson.
There are a million ways to skin a cat, but to think in the most simple terms, if tagging Cam means we draft edge rusher #1, and if not tagging Cam means we draft Neal #1, I would tag Cam.
In those terms, if the choice next year is (a) Neal, or (b) Cam + Hutchinson, I take b. (03-07-2022, 06:49 PM)jaguarmvp Wrote: Tomorrow is the deadline to franchise tag players.
