Draft Speculation (merged threads)

I've been Hutch since the end of the season, but watching film on both with the scheme we're gonna play I'll take Walker over Hutch. Don't understand how people keep saying Walker is a reach when most everyone has him going 1st or 2nd. People act like he's a projected mid 1st rounder.

Aside from running a 3-4, what could you tell us about the scheme and how would that scheme be a fit for Walker and vice versa? How will they use Walker? Edge? 5 Technique? Will they drop him into coverage? This isn't a challenge directed at you, per se. I honestly don't know yet. (04-27-2022, 11:02 PM)JaG4LyFe Wrote: There’s no way Baalke fslll this up. Even tho I agree, I think we should take the safer pick with Hutchinson or even Sauce Gardner. I don't know that Travon Walker wont be good. Nothing from his tape suggest he wont be a very versatile good player... maybe not a big number guy, but a solid player. Who knows.
Honestly watch Hutch highlight reels, I am underwhelmed. I don't see punch or swim moves. I guess he can be taught bit man this thing is a crap shoot.
Why do we always have the wrong draft fits? We need offense and the mid round picks and teams with multiple picks are going to clean up.We seem to be in prime position to over draft. Thia team has not done a good job of positional awareness. Like exploiting waiver wire moves. Front office makes me nervous.

This is what I finally had to admit also. I badly want him to be J.J. Watt. But he doesn't have the size or strength. And this isn't 30 years ago where college players automatically added another 20 lbs and strength. Many college players are close to their full potential. Was always against Walker, but looking at film he translates better to nfl.
Hoping for a trade down. Honestly the safest picks tonight in this draft are probably Ahmad Gardner & Jordan Davis on defense. Tyler Linderbaum maybe the safest pick offensively. But, again, due to size queens you'll probably see him slip into a good situation and quietly carve out a really good ten year career.

I've heard some well known draft pundits say they watched Davis and they don't see the effort. They say, a lot of time, the ball is snapped and he just leans on the guy(s) in front of him.
I’m having visions of the stunned and befuddled silence when Tyson Alualu was announced.

And, I can tell you for a fact. Everybody hyping up Walker, Wyatt, Cine & Dean do not make half the plays they make without Davis' efforts last year. It all started with him. Period. A lot of those "he was just leaning on the guy in front of him" came at times when they were blowing out teams like Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, etc. In the games that mattered the most? He was constantly hustling, constantly demanding double teams and constantly redirecting the flow of the running game elsewhere. Jordan Davis is Leonard Williams on the low end of his potential in the NFL or Fletcher Cox at the high end of his potential, if not, better. He'll be the first DT drafted from this class and he'll probably go onto ultimately have more of an impact than Hutchinson, Thibodeaux & Walker much earlier on in his career. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? By the way I think it's all smoke. They don't want Walker or Hutch. If they can't pull off a trade I'm thinking they take the surest star which is Sauce.

It's a bummer there is no obvious great talent. All of these guys have some potential flaws. But when drafting this high I always felt as though you need three things… 1) you want to see someone have the expected physical toolset, size, athleticism, etc… 2) you want to have seen the production 3) no off the field issues or personality concerns. And of course the big concern with Walker is that you just didn’t see the production. Not a lot of sacks, not a lot of tackles for loss, not a ton of impact plays. All the talk has been that the design of the system had him just hold the line and clean up plays. I haven’t paid much attention at all to the draft this year but finally checked out some highlights of Walker last night. And they are pretty underwhelming. Just didn’t get in the back field much. But does seem like a big hustle guy who runs up and down the line. And his chase down tackle in the national title game was a potential game changer as he saved a TD. But it’s weird to think Kirby Smart had a guy who is a first overall NFL draft talented pass rusher and basically used him to just hang out on the line and clog up lanes. Or is our vision for him to do the same? Hang out on the line and clog up plays but not really disrupt the QB? I can’t imagine that is true as you don’t take a guy first overall to do that.
For all the potential flaws with Hutchinson that he has peaked as a player, the guy has the size and athleticism. He has the production. And he seems to check off on the personality side as well. Even if his floor was just a solid player that averaged 6 sacks a season for the next 7 or 8 years, I still think we’d take that. Even a guy like Icky. He seems to check off all the boxes. Either way, none of these guys would be first overall in a normal year. So the expectation for them will be unrealistic based on their overall skillsets. ________________________________________________ Scouting well is all that matters. Draft philosophy is all fluff. Not a huge fan, he has potential, I just don't know if he's a great fit here right now in Jacksonville. I would take Arnold Ebikete over him with the 33rd overall pick. Without question. I think there will be some interest towards the bottom of RD1 for him though so he probably won't fall into the 2nd night of the draft. Hate him or love him he was pretty flashy at times on a dominating defense last year. Not enough film on him though for me personally outside of last year. I think he was a late bloomer. Sure, he's a freakish athlete for the position. But, again, just like Jordan Davis. As much as I like these two guys prospect wise? I just don't see Jacksonville taking neither one of them due to "scheme" or current roster status. Ebiketie is my guy though at pick 33. If they opt out of DE tonight. And Ebiketie is there at 33 I would take him. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky.
