IF the Defense can get around 10-15ish ranked that would be a massive improvement. I would take 1st all day but we got too many young players playing this year.

It is almost unheard of for a defense to replicate a no.1 ranking. Just be average to above average, and save the no. 1 ranking for when this team is hopefully competing for the super bowls in 3-5 years. I mean physically, and athletically he looks incredible. You can see why they drafted him over Hutch. If he puts it together the potential is off the charts

Regardless of whether we selected Walker or Hutchinson, it was a win either way.
Number one shouldn't be the expectation this year, we are rebuilding. As long as there is a positive trend in most aspects, we are doing the right thing.

I don't know off hand, but I'd wager there are very few instances of a franchise with three consecutive top 3 defensive finishes in the pass happy era since say like 2008/2009. It is definitely a worth goal, it is just not a bankable team-building strategy in this age of the NFL. (2020 had the same issue and included two divisional games with 250 plus yards on the ground - yikes!) The Baalke/Pederson braintrust seems to be wisely focused on putting an end to that trend of poor run defense. The pieces are seemingly in place. Just have to find out if they look as good on the field as they do on paper - and whether Caldwell will put the right packages on the field at the right times. I feel pretty good about it. Might take 4 or 5 games to gel, but I think the defense climbs from bottom of the barrel to mid-tier this season. Maybe a bit better if we're lucky with injury and rookie impact. Depending on which defensive team stat you're using - the niners may have just done it in 2019-2021. I know they at least came close to it.

I was not a hater of the Walker pick as there was not a clear number one, and the more I learn about him the more I can see the reasoning behind the pick.
Just read an article on NFL. Com that Walker is being coached in the outside linebacker position as his primary role for now. It says this is to help in better drop back into coverage on passing plays. Maybe in the future they will work on his premier talent of rushing the QB at the DE position.
Freaking Jags it never fails. (05-19-2022, 10:08 AM)MyBloodIsTeal Wrote: Just read an article on NFL. Com that Walker is being coached in the outside linebacker position as his primary role for now. They are starting him out learning the edge rusher position opposite Josh Allen. He should be able to have immediate impact there. It's not about what he'll do dropping in coverage. It's what he'll do rushing the passer from the edge. They just have to make sure he's coached up on dropping into coverage from that position since it's part of playing OLB/edge in a 3-4 defense. When he's shown he has the fundamentals down at this spot they can figure out if he's ready to start learning the 3-4 DE spot in this scheme. Could happen in August, could happen around the bye week, could happen next offseason. We'll see. Regardless - putting a guy with his size, length and athleticism opposite Josh Allen is going to change the way some offenses think about protecting their QB when they face the Jags. This is good. |
