Instead of assailing him, my opinion is that Baalke did his best to keep things in order during one of the most, if not THE most, turbulent and head-scratching times in Jaguars history. The man should be applauded.

The man should be applauded. Baalke was railroaded by Khan (apparently) with the Mayer hire. But he went along with it and that's a strike against him. He should have been the voice of reason and he wasn't. At least, not enough. I won't judge too harshly as we don't know how it went down exactly. Baalke was complicit in the 2021 free agency and overall roster rebuild phase and it was not good. The draft looks like it may turn out to be decent - but FA was mostly terrible and there were loads of bad personnel decisions in general. He did a very poor job of acclimating a new coach to the roster and the NFL in general. All that said - it looks like last year's draft and this offseason's acquisition haul are going to be pretty good in the end. If it indeed works out that way, my hat is off to the guy. I'm keeping an open mind on it. Not assuming he'll fail. But it's still up in the air. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

GET TORCH AND PITCHFORK! KILL! KILL! KILL! I'm confused. If he was Kahn's employee and Kahn set up the hierarchy with Meyer at the top, why are you saying he was not "enough of a voice of reason", and giving so much blame for his "complicity in 2021 FA", and "not acclimating a new coach"? I know people have said that Meyer didn't really want to do the job with the going home early stuff, but there is also no real evidence that UM was listening to advice and letting Baalke really run personnel decisions. It just feels like you are blaming him for basically not quitting or threatening to quit in protest due some of the decisions made last year. I'm not saying he doesn't get some blame for it, but none of us know how any of that really played out, who was really in charge, and how much leverage/power any of the players really had. I think my whole view of this is that, Baalke is here for at least 2 full seasons. Yes, he is coming with a ton of baggage and red flags that none of this board would have overlooked. But given the Jags are now stuck with him, framing every move and action that he makes with a very negative lens will just make all us way more frustrated and and hopeless in this franchise. Especially with this team now having one of the best QB prospects in this generation still on a rookie deal, and finally have a coach that is reasonably respected around the league and seems to have X's & O's acumen.

I absolutely have not framed every move of his with a negative lens. I've been outspoken about the good things he's accomplished. I credit him with some good draft picks in 21 and in 22, I credit him with the Pederson hire, and I credit him with addressing the vast majority of the glaring roster needs these past few months. I didn't expect so many to be addressed in one offseason - but the other side of that coin is that several should have been addressed LAST year and they weren't.
The share of blame amongst Baalke, Khan and Meyer seems to ebb and flow depending on what the narrative of the day is. For me, Meyer was >90% to blame for last year and so I won’t jump on the Baalke hate train that’s been on a circular track around this fan base for the past 7 months. I like our draft. Even though Kirk is overpaid, I like the structure of the contract and the fact that it helped shake AJ Brown out of the division.
Bottom line is it’s very difficult to get to and win a super bowl so odds are significantly better than average that taking a negative stance toward any coach or front office guy will likely be proven correct at some point in the future. I’ll still give the benefit of the doubt for the first year and a half or so though and early returns are acceptable to me through the lens of this being year 1. To add, Khan’s loyalty to Baalke in the face of the overwhelmingly negative and loud portion of fans against retaining him signal to me that somewhere along the way Baalke really earned Khan’s trust. I believe he likely advised Khan on some things and Khan went against that advice and watched last year turn into a dumpster fire and feels now like he should’ve listened and can’t let the person who advised him to do otherwise go under these terms. Speculation sure, but makes a lot more sense to me then the “KhAn iS a MoRoN! mE SmArTeR dEn HiM!” or “Baalke must have something on him” arguments.

Baalke is Kaa from the jungle book. Not just a snake, but a hypnotist at the same time. It's insane how all he does is leave a trail of slime and destruction year and after, coach after coach, and regime after regime and the man always finds a way to slither to safety and even manages to find people who will come to his defense at the same time.

At the executive level in any corp. there is discussion about direction. Once that is over a decision is made. Kahn made that decision. After that all support that decision whether they agreed or not. Failure to do so gets you a ticket to another job. He would not be here if he went public and said "I told you so". Anyone who has been there knows this. One thing (maybe the only thing) I believe Baalke was able to do is minimize the cap space impact. Can you imagine the cast of characters we would be stuck with now if if Myers was turned totally lose with that cap money?
A new broom always sweeps clean.
