The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Week One

#1
(This post was last modified: 09-12-2022, 08:02 AM by Caldrac. Edited 1 time in total.)

The Good:
Robinson and Etienne looked fresh, fast and furious on the few opportunities they had on the ground. Was good to see both of them involved in the receiving game as well. The receiving group looks a lot better than expected. Walker showed out and made an instant impact on more than one drive. The kicking situation, although not perfect, looks a little bit more hopeful. Didn't see too many blown opportunities on special teams tackling and gunner wise. Didn't really see a turnover until the final drive of the game. Something I can live with. The coaching staff showed the ability to adapt and adjust and the team responded well in the second half after a slow first half.

The Bad:
A lot of misfires on offense. Pass protection was spotty at best with a Chase Young-less defense. A few critical drops and overthrows really came back to ultimately hurt this team down the stretch. Not a fan of the overall imbalance on offense. It's a season opener on the road. No reason to have your QB dropping back 40 or more pass attempts while limiting two of your most explosive and dynamic players on offense to a whopping 15 carries in total. That needs to change as soon as this home opener kicks off against the clots.

The Ugly:
Lawrence has a lot of work to do. His completion percentage is not ideal. His footwork gets sloppy at times and he has a bad tendency of drifting backwards instead of stepping up into the pocket or sliding to an open passing lane. Needs to be more aware and making quicker decisions with the football. As the game progressed, it was obvious the pass protection was going to continue to struggle. This is a give and take situation. Lawrence has to be faster if Pederson is going to keep putting him back in the pocket in passing situations and Pederson needs to also be better with his play calling to make Lawrence's life easier whether it's a screen play, swing play or going back to the ground game.

When it's all said and done. The game came down to four possessions. The opening possession and overthrow of Etienne, the dropped TD by Etienne on 4th and goal, the missed field goal after the turnover before the first half ended and the final scoring possession that Washington had to win the game. There was some opportunities there for this coaching staff to really cut it's teeth. Calling a time out on that 3rd and 10 situation around midfield on Washington's last offensive possession that won the game could have resulted in a different outcome.

Running the football a little bit more in a closely contested game could have also changed the overall outcome of the scoreboard. Really wasn't impressed with the base front four's pass rushing efforts. Caldwell probably should have stole some ideas from Jack Del Rio and started blitzing a little bit more creatively from various lanes to shake up Wentz a little bit more sooner in this game.

All-in-all. Feels good to be a nit picky in a close loss Vs. being woefully somber for what the year has in stored after a game is lost at half time or gets ugly fast in the 2nd half. Last year we could have probably expected Lawrence to get more desperate and start throwing up YOLO passes into coverages that shouldn't have been there. He didn't. That shows maturity.

Hopefully this week shows some even better maturity, learning and growth from all aspects of this football team.

Look, Trevor endured a horrible rookie season with a stupid Head Coach. Lucky for the Jags he has the intangibles you want in a QB and he has the right coaching to help him get him where he needs to be. The O-line is still not great and he got harassed way to often. He needs to work on decision making and the overthrowing his passes.

I’ve played the QB position once or twice and I can see what he is trying to do, trying to lead the receivers and getting the ball out in front of the receivers. The more familiar he gets with his receivers the better he will get.

I still believe he can be great, it’s up to the coaches to calm him down and teach him to not hold the ball too long. He’s close…

The Jags Defense lost the game. The Jags were up and had the commies backed up in their own end zone on a first and 15. This is what elite defenses live for, stop them there the Jags win. But no, they let these mediocre nobodies march down 95 yards and score a td. HORRIBLE!!

I hope Bullseye is ok,we haven't seen him in a while. if i rember correctly doesn't he have some serious health issues?

all of you should know by know Jags hardly ever win games espaissley opening week.

looked like same ol jags yesterday defense couldn't get off the field on 3rd down just about every 3rd down became a first down for commanders, couldn't get a td  when offensse got in red zone,o-line couldn't protect Trevor who was rnning for his life all day.

the only good i saw was the head coach looked lke he was involved instead of just standing there doing nothing.  its going to be another Looooooooooooooong season.

It's the biggest overreaction Monday of the year. So take this week with a huge grain of salt. LAR I'm sure aren't planning for the first pick. Ari still expects to make the playoffs even though Murray was bad this week. Burrow threw 4 INTs, 3 in the first half and Cincy isn't calling for his head yet. It's week one. Yes there is a LOT of cleaning up we need to do and we are not a very good team right now.

We lost this game by 2 plays. The overthrown TD pass to ETN and the missed FG. Those two plays go differently and the entire game stays the same, we win. That's it.

We were sloppy for sure. Too many penalties, OL had a rough go against one of the better DLs in the league. It is what it is.

At the end of the week, Hou/Indy tied, Ten lost to NYG team worse than the Commanders and they were at home. We are .5 game back in the division. We lost a road game to a non conference opponent. While obviously we want to win every game, things could definitely be worse. Last year, that 14-3 halftime deficit would have become 30-6.

Hope Bullseye's ok, as I believe he's usually the one getting these threads going.

Good: Walker seized his moment, and looked the part. If he can keep that up, Allen will see more opportunities to harrass passers. I'll also give a nod that a closely contested game was very welcome, even if in the end we weren't able to seal the victory. What a difference a year makes!

Bad: The oline, as we all expected, appears to be a work in progress. I fear that Trevor will end up playing mistake-prone football unless we scheme some help to account for the line's weakness.

Ugly: Good gravy the penalties. I get that this is a youthful team, but the worst penalties seemed to be on seasoned guys. Clean it up!!

This is why I felt Pederson needed to use a timeout when they were around midfield facing a 3rd and 10 on Washington's last scoring drive.

Regroup, rest and get your rotation set. At the minimum. You let Washington so it's hand formation wise. Forces them to also reset and rethink.

Regarding Lawrence. I think the running game should have been utilized more. Anytime your running game is clicking and you're seeing your QB taking sacks and taking hits to the tune of ten?

Run the damn football. It was a one score game in the 2nd half. No need to keep slinging it. At the minimum. You need to incorporate a screen or quick swing pass to get the front seven to back off some.

Agreed. Pass protection is scary. I can see why Lawrence was rifling it at times or doing the back pedal shuffle.

The play calling needs to balance itself out. Which I believe it will. Really surprised the running game wasn't emphasized more and no screen plays were called after Del Rio started bringing the heat.

Disagree. They didn't look like the same old Jaguars yesterday. This team doesn't look completely lost or demoralized as the last two years of football they showcased.

I saw a young team showing some bounce back. I saw a coaching staff still putting it together. I saw the same staff make 2nd half adjustments that paid off early.

I fully expect Pederson to look at the tape with his staff and say:

"Alright. We need to shore up the left side in pass protection. Need to get the ground game more involved. Need to call some counter plays to settle Lawrence down and into an earlier rhythm. Looks like on defense we need to be bringing more than just the base four in specific passing situations on defense and we need these guys to focus on tackling in the secondary during practice this week".

If those things improve a little bit better during practice this week? Very possible Jacksonville wins in a convincing fashion in their home opener.

I think that's a pretty cool chart.

The good (excellent even): our 1st and 2nd down offense and our 1st down defense

The bad (actually horrific): our 3rd down offense and 2nd and 3rd down defense

It is. But, it's not good when you're not hitting the QB. Wentz was still making plays. Still had a lot of time from the pocket on most drives. Need to see more from Caldwell in this next game scheme wise. If Allen is at 25% percentage wise on his one-on-one's?

Get him over the hump by overloading his side to help get the blocks off of him or at least move him around to throw an offense off. He has to start hitting home. Nobody brags about getting to first base. Did you take her home or not? That's all that matters.

That and not allowing sacks/TFL’s to be nullified by allowing a 1st down right after.  I think it was Allen blowing up the reverse for a 10 yard loss then we give up the 1st down anyway on the next play or two.  That cannot happen.  If the sack/TFL doesn’t result in a stop, it doesn’t mean a whole lot.

Exactly. Slap the full coat of paint on the house or don't even bother touching it.

And they damn near overcame that in a one possession loss. These are things that can be fixed. Young team learning how to settle down and stop stepping on their own [BLEEP] out there on gamedays.

It'll eventually balance itself out. We didn't lose ugly. We didn't get blown out. We just fell short in the situational football side of things yesterday and middle of the pack football teams, which is something we're still trying to even become, that's how most of their games are often decided at this level.

A holding call there. An interference call here. It adds up in close games.

Fo sho'. Our booty cheeks was getting parted like the red sea at times. Ho [BLEEP] offensive line needs to tighten up. No bun intended. I mean pun.
