Jaguars and the need for therapy

Anxious, depressed, stressed after the Jaguars’ season-opening loss? You aren’t alone. (news4jax.com)

Following the Jaguars’ season-opening loss to the Washington Commanders, News4JAX has learned a shocking admission from a Jacksonville psychologist, who says some fans have actually been seeking therapy due to the team’s performance.

I couldn’t believe it when Dr. Justin D’Arienzo, a clinical psychologist, told me this. My story Monday started with the idea of speaking with a doctor about how fans can deal with the pain of another loss, but during the interview, D’Arienzo told me that he’s actually treated Jaguars fans who are distraught over the team’s losing record.

“Talking about the Jags is a common topic in my psychotherapy sessions,” D’Arienzo said. “There’s a lot of die-hard season ticket holders, people that have season tickets for years and have given up on the team.”...

Well, I haven't given up on them and I'm not in therapy, lol but I gave up my season tickets this year after having them every year since 1995. There are a lot of reasons why and I will probably still attend a game or three but this long term losing is definitely having an impact on the fan base.

Losing or not, I always try to plan my visits to Jax when home game is being played. (This weekend being an exception, the person I really wanted to visit is going away next weekend) WHan I do get down here on weekends that a game is being played at TIAA Sadium, I always get tickets to it well in advance so I can have a freind attend the game with me. I was living down here when Jacksonville got the team and have been a fan ever since. Win, lose, or draw, the Jaguars will always be my team.

Spending large amounts of money to be repeatedly, and somewhat predictably, disappointed would seem to an outsider an act worthy of a visit to a health professional. I speak from experience. After a 5-year hiatus, we decided to take the plunge again this year.

Hey, that's a HIPPA violation.  He's not allowed to talk about my treatment!

I could see re-upping again at some point but the break is going to seem nice until/if they ever make to even a moderate amount of success. Plus football on a big screen 4K HDTV is a lot better experience than the old 25'' Sylvania back in the 90s and the beer's a lot cheaper too, lol.

Man I'm in the wrong line of work.

I'd be happy to charge $100 a session to tell you to cancel your tickets and stop watching if they make you so miserable you seek help.

Find other hobbies and pastimes, when one fails to bring joy, move to the next one.

Mental health is so very much more important than laundry and logos.

Good thing it isn’t HIPAA or there would be a big problem.

Anyone ever felt like this article?  I would have to say that anyone who has been a Jaguars fan for any period of time, has felt the repeated gut punches. Funny, yet sad, that this is a real issue.

Nope. The only fans that I legitimately feel sorry for are the ones who actually shell out money for season tickets and take a financial loss yearly for the poor showing and bad products that have been produced during Khan's ownership.

If you're a regular fan? An armchair General Manager (which is mostly the group on here), I cannot fathom why anybody would be so emotionally invested into this franchise and distraught. That's why I have a hard time saying "We" when I talk about this football team.

Is it really "We"? I am not getting paid millions to suit up on Gameday's, I am not taking the snaps, taking the flights to games, taking the beatings, shots to the helmet and busting my body up throughout the week to help this team win football games.

I just watch them and try to catch a game or two when tickets are there and the game actually looks good or promising on paper. But, to be "depressed", come on now, be better than that. I can understand a child or a teenager getting emotionally distraught over it.

I was guilty of this growing up. Beat up a tacks fan wearing a Wycheck jersey in Middle School right after they lost to the tacks for a third time in one year. Almost got kicked out of a Bengals game on MNF or TNF as a teenager for getting into it with some Bengals fans and egging on that "who dat, who dey" chant. Cried as a kid one time when Shannon Sharpe caught a crazy last minute, double tip toe TD against us when he was a Raven, etc.

But as a grown [BLEEP] man? Listen, outside of that 2017 season? That Championship game? That's the only time I was flying off the [BLEEP] handle. Because they were close. I think that's really the only acceptable time to lose your [BLEEP]. When you know the game is rigged or the refs are on their knees blowing the game. Season opener though? There's 16 more games of abuse to go.

Be a glutton for punishment like the rest of us. If you've been a fan this long? You're built for it.

I've gotten to be pretty good at rolling with the punches from this franchise.

I do still have hope that this year will turn out to be a stepping stone season moving toward postseason validity, though.

So, some would say I'm still a glutton for punishment. (although at least one guy here thinks I'm dumb for not expecting wins every week. There's your therapy candidate)

So what about us who don't make it to a lot of games but shell out tons of money for jerseys and merch?

I think anyone who has been emotionally invested in this team (a lot of us since the beginning), I can understand being a little depressed over the situation.. Of course, there's better and more valuable things in life to be depressed over, but still.. Just because some people handle it well, doesn't mean others are.

For the most part, I've actually detached my emotions as they relate to the final gameday score, but rather enjoy the entire atmosphere of the NCAA and NFL by riding my bicycle along Jax Beach while sipping on some spiked refreshments prior to slipping into a local sports bar to watch all of the games.

We're all gonna die so what's it really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Just remember that you have absolutely no control over any part of it and you'll do A-ok. Getting mad at entertainment is not a wise way to spend time.

The only thing you control is to pay attention or not.
You're Welcome.

Then you have my sympathy. And respect. I agree with you. Some of us are built differently. Try to take in the bad with the good on my end as much as I can.

I am not seeking out therapy though over a football team. Then again, I am also the type that wouldn't seek out therapy to reconcile any deep rooted issues that went years unresolved. So, there's that.

I'm not depressed from this [BLEEP].. But I can understand if some are, to an extent.. But for me, depressed? No..

Pissed? Yeah.. Time to start acting right.. To the point of walking away from this team? Never..

This is my [BLEEP] headed team, thick or thin..
