Reviving an old thread to mention Campbell's ups and downs.

On the upside, he's showing week in and week out that he can get in the hip pocket of just about any receiver you throw his way.

On the downside, he indeed still struggles to locate the ball in the air and make a play on it at times. He's doing this less than last year, but it still rears it's head.

This season - after 5 weeks - he has allowed a 55% completion rate and an average of 40 yards per game - 7 yards per target.
This ranks him near some pretty good CB1 players in the league and above most CB2's.

Learning to recognize when a receiver is tracking the ball and getting your head around should be something that can be learned and improved upon.

Not being able to put himself in a position where he could make a play would be much more concerning.

Correcting what he is struggling withe is more like fine tuning of his coverage skills.

I think he is going to develop into a really good CB.

He had 3 passes defensed yesterday. That's a good single game number. 
Waiting on advanced defensive stat line to publish. Will be interesting to see. I bet Griffin had twice as many targets as Campbell, and we know why.

I would have at least tried mixing it up and switched the two with Griffin getting beat so often on Sunday. But, for all we know, they try this in practice and Williams isn't asserting his case to play outside. I ain't there, so I can't say what the case may be.

Regardless, I don't see Griffin returning in 23.

Campbell allowed 4 completions on 9 targets netting TWO yards.

Excellent performance.

colts were clearly more focused on Griffin and LBs to target and it worked
Jags have to find a way to play press and disrupt the shallow quick hit stuff.

flj&g's thought of Williams and Campbell outside with Herndon in the slot is an appealing idea if we see this approach again - (and we will)

Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency. 


1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

An interesting point was made about Tyson Campbell and Darious Williams today on the Primetime show. If Griffin continues to struggle, should they consider just lining Campbell up on their opponent's best receiver or at least put Williams on the outside where he had success already previously with the Rams.

The part I find funny though, is that, it seemed like it didn't matter who was lined up in front of Griffin. He was getting taken to the woodshed no matter what the majority of the time. It was Alec Pierce, a rookie, that ultimately embarrassed him. Some of the other folks chimed in about lack of pass rush, etc.

Look, lack of pass rush or not, that does not excuse Griffin falling asleep with the game on the line and giving up the go ahead TD in short order. It also doesn't erase the fact that he graded poorly. He was so BAD, Campbell graded out so GOOD, because he wasn't picked on after he stopped his receivers from making any plays on him.

This is great considering Matt Ryan went for 300. Campbell is turning into a stud but I don’t want to jinx him. I figured Jram would be on this list. 

Caldrac mentioned Bradberry on his defensive wishlist for next season. I would make him my number 1 FA priority on defense to pair up with Campbell.

Exactly, it was nit picking.  Most corners can't blanket the WR like Campbell can. It's just what a few on here still say, I was being sarcastic

All three were deep balls, he located the ball PERFECTLY on all three.  One he lost his balance a little at the top of the route, but since he already had his head around he tracked the ball instead of panicking to grab a receiver.  

Timing and ball awareness are generally ingrained traits.  If he adds those to his elite athleticism and ability to stay in phase he can be a special player.
