I have a quick trivia question

(This post was last modified: 01-07-2023, 04:12 PM by JagFanatic24. Edited 1 time in total.)

Does anyone know what Jaguars player has converted the most total first downs in a single game?

My initial guess is Jimmy Smith’s 291 game against the Ravens in 2000. Then I thought maybe it was McCardell’s 18 receptions for 232 yards against the Rams in 1996. Then maybe I thought it was Taylor’s 3 TD game against the Bucs and Browns in his rookie year in 1998. After googling and searching statmuse for almost an hour, I got tired of searching.

As a team the most first downs converted was 36 against the Rams in 1996, but what Jaguars player holds the single game record for most first downs rushing and receiving combined?

Does anyone know who holds the single game record for most total first downs?

Rushing and receiving combined in a single game? Probably Maurice Jones-Drew. Not sure which game or year but he had some pretty good, well balanced games here as a Jaguar.

If you add rushing, passing into it, I'd assume it's either Brunel or Garrard.

Edit: Garrard was a dual threat before Hurts. Dude could rush for 1st downs and could throw pretty well before he got figured out.

No passing added please. Just want to know rushing/receiving combined total first downs picked up in a single game for a Jaguars player.

Smith racked up 86 first downs in 1999, which I think is the most in a single season but I’m not positive on that.

I also think Fred Taylor has the most first downs in Jaguars history with 593. Jimmy Smith is 2nd with 579. And Jones-Drew is 3rd with 558.

I just can’t find the single game record.

Looking at Jones-Drew's 2011 season. In particular, the Tampa Bay game where we blew them out 41 - 14. MJD had four TD's in that game. 2 in the air. 2 on the ground. 27 carries for 85 yards and 6 catches for 51 yards. Trying to break that down now.

Appreciate the help.

For anyone else who is a stat nut like me, you know it takes hours to break this stuff down. Sometimes the broadcast guys will show stats on the screen, but a lot of times they don’t so it’s always fun to see what the stats show.

I'll have to keep digging but I am willing to bet it's Maurice Jones-Drew in 2011. He carried that entire team with a rookie Blaine Gabbert behind center.

His 2011 season was pretty special. It's a shame that team went 5 - 11 but it was pretty ugly at that time with the coaching staff and overall lack of talent.

Question, JagFanatic24. Did I bump into you at a Hallmark here in Jacksonville not too long ago? I ran into an older gentleman and he started getting into trivia and the funny part was he referenced flying and the Wright brothers and that day in particular was the day they took off for the first time I believe. We both laughed because my last name is Wright. Completely coincidental I guess but funny nonetheless.

When I was a kid. Me and my Mom worked at Subway all across Jacksonville. I managed one over on Neptune Beach and worked nights sometimes between the store at Hodges and Atlantic and also the other Subway on the other side of Beach towards Adventure Landing.

Anyway. This dude would order the SAME THING every time he came in. He would come in at least twice a week. Especially as a rookie. He would get not one, not two, but three, THREE [BLEEP] foot long, whole wheat Turkey sandwiches with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo with olive oil and vinegar splashed on them.

He could put them away man. I know Subway was considered "healthy" at one point but wolfing down three sandwiches fully loaded like like that is easily well over 2,000 calories in one sitting. Daryl Smith would come in sometimes with him too. Really cool cats man. I was always respectful and didn't like to chat them up too much but I told MJD he should have been rookie of the year that summer after his first year was over. He laughed it off. Very humble. He said the QB always gets the glory. Referring to Vince Young at the time.

Super polite though.

It's irritating how hard it is to find first downs as a statistic. A run for 4 yards on 3rd and 5 is a 0. A catch for 5 yards on 3rd and 6 is a 0. The stats keepers in football don't seem to understand that. Fantasy football should count first downs as points, also. It's crazy that so many leagues will count receptions as points but not first downs.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

Dude was always a human bowling ball...

I remember when he took out that one San Diego Charger at the goal line.  The dude had a celebration called "lights out".

MJD, blew him the [BLEEP] up.

That lights out guy was never the same after that....  And it was glorious!!!!

Edit - It was Shawn Merriman. Dude was such a douche bag. And there was MJD, just absolutely exposing him as a punk. A few months later, it turned out he was on the roids and never was the same again. I always credit MJD for exposing that dude.

Very irritating. I’ve looked for about a total of 2 and half hours trying to find first downs, but it’s hard to find single game first downs. They will show season and career but not single games.

I do know that Evan Engram picked up 8 first downs in his game against the Titans in which he racked up 11 catches for 162 yards and 2 TDs. Of his 11 catches, 8 of them were first downs which is pretty cool. He probably holds the record for 1st downs by a TE as a Jaguar.

@Caldrac, I don’t think that was me. I haven’t been to a hallmark since the early 2000’s.

I doubt he’s number one, but Justin Blackmon in that game vs (Texans or colts?) seemed to be the only guy picking up first downs so could be up there.

Edit. Just googled to confirm but only 7 catches, but wow what a rookie game.

Thanks for looking. Not sure why the NFL is hiding this stat.
