As such, I'm looking for a complimentary tight end.  The best compliment is Darnell Washington.  Engram is the receiving tight end.  Washington is the blocking tight end.  The problem is that I don't like using a first or second round pick on a tight end #2.  How much is he going to play?  We have Ridley, Kirk, Z. Jones and Engram.  You have to take one of them off the field in order for the tight end #2 to play.  Sure, you will do it some by taking out Zay Jones, but is it often enough to justify taking a tight end in the first two rounds?  I like players taken that early to be full time players.  Teams win games with the players on the field and not the ones sitting on the bench.   I don't see Washington lasting until the third round and very likely not even until our second rounder.  If we're going offense in the first two rounds, I'm selecting an offensive lineman who can play every down.  As such, I don't see the selection of Washington as being likely.  If I were in charge of the draft, I'm likely waiting until the fourth round to draft a tight end.

My goal would be to take best TE available -- whether receiving or blocking -- after the 1st round. There are no Kyle Pittses in this draft.

Ok, let's hypothetically say the Jaguars draft the best tight end available in the second round.  What's your plan from there?  Is Engram a one year rental or do you continue to sign him long term?  If we resign Engram long term and use a second rounder, it feels like a lot of resources going into the tight end position.

You still try to resign Engram. Doug's offense is built for 2 really good TEs

This could become a major issue in 2024. Engram will ask for receiver money. Do the Jags tag him again, meet his demands or let him walk??

That would be so Baalke to take the next Taven Bryan.

Agreed. Baalke scares the heck out of me!

Doug's offense is built for whichever roster he has available.

There was only one season during his time in Philly that two TEs had over 500 yards each. And that was largely based on a drought at WR.

Every team needs more than one viable TE, but this team doesn't need to sign Engram to a big deal AND draft one prior to the 4th. We'd be fine picking up a cheap free agent like Dan Arnold who already knows the system and drafting a blocking TE later.

Then they can offer Engram a longer deal based on his 2023 performance if they choose.

If a TE is at the top of our board in the 1st or 2nd you take him.  2 elite TEs in Dougs offense could cause nightmares for defenses.

Nope

That's not how this team is gonna draft TE this year. Too many positions of greater value with more urgent need - and too many easy ways to skin a cat on keeping the TE position behind Engram viable.

They aren't taking a TE in the first round unless they know damn well they don't plan on working a deal with Engram.

Top of the board and best player available tropes and clichés can be damned. That would be a seriously unwise usage of draft capital.

What we have in hand can cause plenty of nightmares for defenses. Fix the damn lines.

I said 1st or 2nd.  Or possibly 3rd or 4th it just depends on how the draft falls.  I don't see us reaching for oline in the 1st just because it's a bigger need.  With that said I dont think TE will be BAP in the first.  There isn't a TE in the draft I'd take over Torrence.  If oline is at the top of the board they will grab one but I think they stick to their board.

Draft boards` are guidelines.

Baalke isn't Moses and the board isn't the Ten Commandments.
Every pick is open for discussion, collaboration and movement.
None of it is set in stone on draft day.

Also - why did you assume drafting OL in the first would be a reach??
There are at least 5 OL drafted in the first round every year.  Not a stretch to think a linemen is available at our pick who doesn't constitute a reach.

Did you actually read the whole post?  Lol.  I said in the same post there isn't a TE in the draft I'd take over Torrence, along with a few other olineman.  They have mentioned multiple times in the past that they are going to take the BPA and stick to their board and I don't think this year will be any different.

You called OL at 24 a reach. I was just quoting what you said.
Not my fault you contradicted yourself.

I said they wont reach on OL at 24.  I didnt say every olineman in the draft at 24 would be a reach. I didn't contradict myself you just misunderstood what I was saying.  Hell I think a few OL there could be a steal.

Not really. The 2nd rounder would be playing on a rookie contract. Pederson loves using tight ends and so we'd probably see plenty of two TE sets.

Who in the world is going to give up a first-rounder and then a new contract for Evan Engram?

I think the best hope for the Engram situation is to get his side of the table to back off on their asking price and sign a 3 or 4 year deal.

If that doesn't happen before or during this current tag, then he will need to be replaced next year via a '23 or '24 draft selection.

Would love to see Engram sign the long term deal, Jags trade for Budda, and then draft Darnell Wright in round 1.

One more long week to the draft. Only long because it’s been a much anticipated wait.

Going to be a nice change of pace for me personally as a fan. Not sure how everybody else feels but I enjoy the fact that for once I'll actually have to sit down and focus on the draft since we pick so late.

I'll be able to get a few shots of bourbon in comfortably. In the past, well, more like, at least 10 out of the last 11 drafts I was having to [BLEEP] pregame during the predraft shows just to have a buzz before our pick came in right at the top of the hour.
