Louis Riddick on Jaguars Prospects in 2023

Here's a guy in the national media who isn't openly hostile towards the Jaguars.

I agree this offense is going to be a juggernaut. By the time it’s said and done, they could be the best in the NFL or at least top 3. Defense has question marks though. A lack of a pass rush and depth in the secondary could be our Achilles heel.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

That's one my biggest fears going into the season. Granted, I think our offense could win most high scoring games if it came down to it, but that is a stress/pressure I don't want to add to Trevor Lawrence. Marino won a bunch of those games over the years, but at the end, he only went to one Super Bowl and didn't win it. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Exactly. I don't want to see Lawrence end up like Marino, Fouts or Rivers. Would rather have a well rounded team that can play defense in the big games and get a Superbowl win or two out of Lawrence in the clutch. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? Hopefully they can make a Marcel Darius like trade at the deadline for an impact rusher. Dangle Cam Robinson as bait.

If not, rent a pass rusher for a SB run.

Unless they want to gamble with 2025's selections. Right now we're on the hook for a 3rd or 2nd to the Falcons depending on Ridley's success in this offense. We also need to extend him if he does end up being "the guy" in this offense. They need Walker and Allen to step it the [BLEEP] up in 2023. Especially in this division. The games to watch this year are the big games. Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, Bengals and 49ers. Those are games where we can truly get a feel for where this team is at. Those are the teams to beat in the play-off's. If they barely win or lose those games, especially the early ones before the trade deadline, maybe they go after a pass rusher. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? We desperately need some pass rush help from a veteran out there. Right now Allen is our top guy and he had 7 sacks last season. The year before that he had 7.5 sacks and 2.5 the year before that. Dude is in slump city but he’s the best pass rusher the Jaguars have right now on paper.
Walker has 3.5 sacks to his name. I’m with Caldrac, these dudes need to step it up this season. Walker needs to double his productivity and Allen needs to be somewhere around 11 to 13 sacks. Don’t come at me with the QB hits and pressures. I want sacks. I’m going to be hard on those 2 DE’s all season long. Our first 3 games: division game at Indy right off rip. Then we’re home against the Chiefs, and then we get another divisional game with the Texans coming to town in week 3. With a fast start we can get a hold on this division and be in the race for a first round bye. Jaguars-Josh Allen has been a BEAST in division games. No I’m being serious, check out what he did last season in the division… Sacks - 5 Forced Fumble - 3 Fumble Recovery - 2 Touchdown - 1 Let’s check out Walker against division opponents while we’re at it… Sacks - 1 Forced Fumble - 1 Fumble Recovery - 0 Touchdown - 0 Need Walker to turn up..
It's pretty obvious that our staff is satisfied they can win with the current roster following free agency and the draft. Their expectations for Walker and Lloyd are for much improvement, which often is the case with 2nd year players once the NFL game has slowed down for them. Josh Allen is likely to have a "career year" since he'll be playing for a big contract.
While I'd like to see them sign an inexpensive veteran like Justin Houston, the nickel position has me more concerned. Herndon has shown the inability to effectively cover slot receivers and the three draft choices were all taken in the later rounds due to weaknesses in their game. Johnson is most likely to become a starting safety in 2024 rather than a nickel. Even if the pass rush improves (which should happen), the Jaguars must face Mahomes, Burrow and Allen in the regular season and most likely at least once again in the playoffs. What is the confidence level of our fans that we can outscore the Chiefs, Bengals and Bills given the current status of our secondary? As much as I hate to think of this, what if Campbell or Williams are forced to miss a significant number of games due to injury? While Baalke has done an overall good job in player acquisition the past few seasons, failing to draft one of the more highly regarded nickels like Clark Phillips will come back to haunt him. Phillips would have made much more sense than Tank Bigsby in round 3 since the Jags already acquired DeEernest Johnson and also likes Hasty. Bigsby will be a good player, but how many touches will he get in a typical game? The 2023 Jaguars have a chance to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. If this is to come to fruition, however, they must find a way to add another capable player who can be the nickel or fill in at corner. My hope is that Baalke, Pederson and Caldwell have a plan to make this happen. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

I hope to see A huge step from Walker. I think they believe he will hit the next level. I hope they move him inside personally.

Yesterday I saw Adam Rank predict wins and losses for the Bills. Of course he gave them a win vs the Jags but not only that, gave them 1 loss vs the Jets and 2 losses vs Miami lol, and an overall 9-8 record...
