53 Man Roster

On the WR side, I know that they really like Washington, and I have a feeling he's a lock on the roster. I think Tim's done enough between receiving and special teams to assure us that he'll make the cut too, especially considering that comments have been made that ST contribution may end up the difference between a keep and a cut. Here's the sticky bit - I agree that Cooks is probably too good to stash away on a PS, and there's no chance we keep 7 WR. So we're left to look at one more WR - Agnew. Has Washington shown enough to say that we can rely on him in the return game? Does Agnew bring enough as a receiver to justify his spot? It would be an eyebrow-raising move to keep two rooks and send Agnew away, but I can't say I wouldn't be opposed if they went in this direction. Is the difference between Harris and Cooks small enough that if one is claimed and the other sticks to PS, you feel secure leaving them there? Personally I think Cooks has more promise. Is there really anyway to hide/stash someone on a practice squad. I mean, I see that term being used all of the time in posts but I'd have to think the 1st place GMs looks to when seeking player cuts are the players that they actually retained on their practice squad since those players are essentially the top quality of young players that didn't make the teams 53 man roster.

Since the large 37 man (or so) release date is at one time this year, I would imagine Doug would start his one-on-one meetings with each player being cut today. Although the official release may not happen until 4pm tomorrow, I would think we will start seeing social media posts informing us of some of the cuts. (08-28-2023, 09:50 AM)HURRICANE!!! No PS players are available to other teams to claim as long as they sign them to their 53. Teams needing WR depth will def look to our PS for claims. We've lost players that way and gained players that way plenty in the past. The only way I can think to try to "hide/stash" someone on a practice squad is to limit or not play a certain young player in the preseason games, thereby limiting his tape/exposure to other teams. On a sports radio station when I was on business in Dallas, they indicated that each week a team may protect up to 4 practice squad players, from Tuesday through gameday. However, basically on Monday, even those practice squad players are exposed to pickup by another team. I don't know if this is correct or just radio speculation on the rules.

Vic Ketchman wrote about that process. He described how a HC assistant would approach a player to tell them the coach wanted to speak to them. That’s the sign they’re being cut. Players regarded the assistant like the grim reaper. When he showed up in the locker room, everyone prayed he didn’t approach them.

I see that after posting. Sucks because everyone who gets cut gonna end up missing out on that labor day holiday. (08-28-2023, 10:19 AM)ATLjag Wrote:(08-28-2023, 09:50 AM)HURRICANE!!! If you want to stash a player away, you get the team physician to diagnose them with turf allergy and put them on IR. Usually the condition goes away within about 7-10 months. Seems almost a certainty we keep: Ridley Kirk Z Jones Agnew Tim Jones Washington Contrary to the chatter, Agnew's spot is not at risk at all. The staff and QB love what he brings to the offense even with limited snaps, and he's a top ten returner. Washington is safe IMO because they want a dedicated backup returner and he has upside top develop as Agnew's replacement in 2024. The only variable here is if one of the bigger wideouts (Cooks, Harris, Williams) looks coachable enough to develop blocking skill in short order. If they think they can develop one of them quickly - then MAYBE Tim Jones becomes a tough cut in order to go with upside over experience. Kind-of doubt it. Thanks all. So the term "stashing" or "hiding" someone on the practice squad is only a figure of speech, which is actually contradictory to what is actually being done. Got it.

It is a bit of a misnomer for sure. It works fine for guys that fly under the radar - but the modern coverage of camps and preseason has made it tougher for talent to remain unnoticed and then "stashed" effectively on practice squads. I'm sure there are coaches out there who limit preseason play of certain players so they can attempt to keep them off of other team's radar screens, but many other GMs have similar scouting reports on theses players to the team trying to keep them, so... they know which players on other practice squads are worth stealing.
Gotta feel really bad for Miller. Despite being a questionable draft pick, you hate to see anybody get hurt. It does make Pederson's decision making process at the linebacker position. As far as the decision to be made at wide receiver, I think it's being made a bigger deal than it should be. If Ridley, Kirk, Zay and Agnew play at the level we expect, the 6th receiver (or 5th, if Washington is 6th) will hardly see the field other than on special teams. The Jags aren't cutting Washington even though Cooks, Harris and Williams have looked better at receiver than him. In my opinion, the deciding factor should be which young receiver has the highest ceiling. It wouldn't shock me if Zay Jones (or Kirk) become a salary cap casualty next season if Ridley is re=signed. Do they feel any one of these 3 has the ability to move into this spot without too much being lost on the field? If one of these guys clearly has the biggest upside, they should keep him over Tim Jones. If not, keep Jones due to his superiority on special teams.
