What Strange did on the play should be illegal.  Don't get me wrong, I'll take it since it benefitted us and isn't currently illegal apparently, but it should be.  Strange was the ball carrier carrier on that play.

It wasn’t the scrum that I have a problem with.  Bigsby got hit in the backfield and lost all momentum.  Strange immediately grabbed him and started pushing/pulling him toward the goal line. Then the scrum formed around them and all bets are off at that point.  It’s really the split second where the ball carrier is stopped and a teammate grabs him and starts pulling him forward that seems like a rule is being broken or a rule is missing.

At one time, it was illegal to push/pull a ball carrier like that but they stopped calling that like 20 years ago. It was called “aiding the runner” or words to that effect.

Cooper Hodges did something similar on the Rourke TD pass where he had a defender draped on him and he threw the TD. If you go back and watch it, Hodges was pulling the defender in the opposite direction as if he was blocking, which gave Rourke an extra millisecond to get the pass off. 

The Strange pull play will never be illegal because there are no rules that says he can’t go pull his own player in the opposite direction. 

Also on defense at the end of games, I’ve seen guys tackle there own players in order to seal the game instead of letting them run around and get hit and fumble the football away to the other team.

The way the rule is worded indicates he wasn’t down because he wasn’t out of bounds, kneeling or on the ground. If the word before “making no effort to advance” was “or” instead of “and”, I’d agree with you though.

That was my thought as well. Why you should never rely on that, a strict reading of the rule would’ve blown to play dead when he was clearly just standing there, lackadaisically holding the ball.

It was week one. It'll be interesting to see how they go about addressing the obvious issues from yesterday. Etienne is more poised and quick with the football in his hands, if you look at the TD run he had yesterday it was really mostly him using the bad blocking to his advantage. He crashed the pile to the right, had the defense flow to the congestion in the middle and then shot out the side door through the garage and sealed the deal.

Bigsby had two unfortunate things happen to him yesterday, the bounced INT and the fumble. That's from lack of experience and awareness. Again, obviously that should go away in due time. I can't knock the kid too bad. He'll have 16 more games this year to make up for it. He at least got escorted into the endzone with Strange to put a TD on the stat sheet. Outside of that? He was completely ineffective behind that offensive line.

Not sure what they're planning on doing this week at practice but I know those starting five big sloppy's need to be pushing the [BLEEP] sleds hard everyday this week and working on footwork and communication. Really [BLEEP] tired of seeing these guys getting blown back or hands already in between the gaps looking to snatch the RB or QB. I wasn't joking we posted that NFLDraftBuzz link to the offensive lineman prospects in the gameday thread.

Building the trenches and protecting Lawrence is the numero uno priority for me moving forward.

Only way he gets better is by getting on the field.

If Etienne gets 25% fewer carries, odds are he's going to be 25% fresher when he gets the ball in his hands. How is that bad?

Season is long, let's simmer on this for a bit before deciding that the sky is in fact falling.

if its not 3rd and 1 or a goal to go situation where you need hard running in the A gaps; I think Etienne should be on the field exclusively.

I don't want to make obvious tips of our hand.

(Remember what the commentators were saying about Jawann on Thursday, on pass downs he's way off the line, on runs he was flush with the LOS.) If the only time we bring in Tank is short yardage thumpy plays, you're not only pigeonholing him, you're basically inviting the D to stack the line.

We all saw that he was fully capable of putting down some nice runs in the PS, why not give him the chance to put a few down now that the games matter?

Only mistake was the tipped ball INT. The "fumble" was crap and should have been blown dead. If that's a rookie mistake by Bigsby, then everyone on the field except Franklin and Buckner made a rookie mistake on that play.

Little played good, Harrison played elite. Fortner played solid. Bartch can’t get to the 2nd level, and Scherff is still in training camp or something.

Considering this thread is about Etienne and Bigsby, I would hope not.

That scrum late just before his TD was a thing of beauty.  Just a completely demoralizing run for a defense. I think Bigsby is capable of more than just head down, grind out a yard or two type of plays. He's gotta get a feel for the game, but it will come.

You mean when Strange pulled him to the goal line? That play was awesome. Then Fortner and Harrison got in on it and the pile started moving more.

RB still didn't go down. Let's not discount that there were a whole bunch of legs churnin in that scrum.
