Monroe Traded

Sorry if this has been said, but it seems like we just traded the #2 pick for a 4th / 5th rounder & some cash.

Very unhappy with this trade.

I look at it as trading a guy who won't be here after 12 more games for a 4th an 5th rounder.

So, Harbaugh states an indisputable fact about Monroe's remaining contract and seeing what happens in the next 12 weeks, that's just coach speak we can disregard.  Caldwell passingly lists a player you don't like as part of our "core", he's an idiot.  Got it.

Quote:I've seen TMD use "coach speak" as a reason not to buy a player playing well. Now, this same "coach speak" is being used to make his argument.

Funny how that works.

Yeah, it's all based on what agrees with his point on that particular day.

I was shocked by it too. One of our best players? But it's a radical rebuild that is changing the foundation of our team, so they'll acquire as many draft picks as possible to build a new team.

Hopefully next years draft feels similar to this draft. We'll just have to see how it all plays out.

Quote:Its been reported already that we contacted the Steelers and Cardinals, so yeah there is proof that he was shopped around. The media doesnt get report on every single team Dave called, but those two show he put the time in and im sure he called more.

Curious, what would you, or TMD for that matter, consider a realistic fair compensation. Taking into account that Albert who was a better player got an offer of a 3rd round pick from the most desperate GM in the NFL.
i'd like to see those reports tbh

Someone already said this, yes. And it didn't make sense when they said it either.

Quote:Neither one of them should or would be on this team in 3 years, Geno Hayes is a stop gap player just like Daryl Smith would've been had he been retained, only difference Daryl Smith is 100x better then Geno Hayes

Geno Hayes: Age 26

Daryl Smith: Age 31

You've clearly put a bunch of research into this, so hopefully the above will help clarify why Caldwell, during a rebuild, might take a chance on one player over another.

The symbolic move of getting rid of a player whose contract far exceeds his production sends a good message to the rest of the locker room in a rebuild.

I think the message we sent was that if your contract exceeds production, we'll send you to one of the top organizations in the NFL.  We'll send you to a team that knows what they are doing.  Not really much of a threat.

Geno Hayes is a journeyman, I don't care that he's 26, he's a journeyman that shouldn't be apart of any long term solutions. I find it funny anyone would think otherwise

The round number and draft position of the Gene Smith picks are looking like +-2 for the selection. Think of it as a second/third round pick and getting 4/5 in return. Something > Nothing

Sorry that in your exhaustive research you found there were no differences between these two players, or that it's news to you that age is sometimes a factor when rebuilding a team.

Yet again you deliver your opinion as absolutely fact, as if no young player had ever improved.  He's on a cheap 2 year contract in case he doesn't improve; we took a chance on a younger guy in case he does.  This isn't a hard concept, but you seem to be struggling with it.

So we should have kept him for 12 more games and gotten nothing?? People look at the entire context!!!

He signed a 2 year 2 million dollar deal. He's not the long term answer either.

Unless he flourished in our system or improved, that's correct.  But you take chances during a rebuild on younger guys because you hope a few of them do improve, and then they're still young enough to keep around by the time the rebuild is in full swing.

Reports say he didn't, reports say he did.  Logic dictates that any GM would.

So, naturally we should just assume he didn't.

Quote:The issue regards the greater value of the earlier compared to the later future pick, hence the increased value of the earlier pick. The same reasoning applies in deciding on the value of two competing offers. Regardless of whose pick it is, the various links provided earlier and others indicate that a 2014 4th is roughly equivalent to a 2015 3rd in valuation.
This isn't money on an open market. Unless you can find someone that will trade a higher pick next year for a pick this year the value is nothing more than an arbitrary number.

If no one is willing to give you return on a dollar there is no time value. Your dollar today will equal a dollar tomorrow.

The assumption being made as to how time value relates to draft picks is that picks are traded on an open market where anyone who wants to can trade their current pick for a future pick a round higher and that all trades are made at this rate. If that were the case, then yes, the time value model would apply. You would have a set discount rate to calculate the future value.

But it isn't an open market and there isn't a guarantee that anyone is willing to give you anything of greater value for your current pick much less the assumed value of a round higher pick the next year. Therefore there is no applicable discount rate to calculate a time value so you can't say a pick this year is worth a pick a round higher next year. That is a faulty assumption.

Draft picks only act like money when they are exchanged like money and the rates at which they are exchanged vary widely. Nice attempt by those people to try and connect the two but their premise is flawed.

Not only is Daryl Smith 31, he just came off a nearly entire missed season due to a groin injury. But the most important reason he wasn't brought back is that he doesn't fit Bradley's defense as an outside linebacker. Geno Hayes fits better, and who's to say he won't thrive in a system that is a good match for his skills.

The bottom line is they knew what they had in Daryl Smith, and he didn't fit. With a few exceptions, Geno Hayes is in the same boat as most of the team - auditioning for the future.

Are people really dumb enough to think Dave Caldwell traded Monroe to the only team he talked to, and made no effort to get a better deal?

Really?

I guess so. 2-20 in two years. Is not proof enough.
