Well, the 2023 Jacksonville Jaguars believe that the best thing to do on 1st and 10, no matter the position on the field, no matter the time on the clock, no matter the score on the board, no matter the effectiviness of the game plan so far...
No. Its 1st and 10. Whether the game started and it's 0-0 and we're on the 20... Or if it's 7 minutes left in the 2nd Quarter down 14, and we're on our 30... We go shotgun and then run ETN up the middle. That is what we do. And we will continue to do it. And we do it even when we are down 3 scores. Do you know why? Because we are the Jaguars and we are apparently contractually obligated to go shotgun on 1st and 10. But not only that. We must force ETN to get the ball and run straight up the middle. And we will hope for the best. Sure, maybe we'll have to punt. Or maybe we'll have to fail on 4th down. But we'll get the ball back. And when we do... You will feel our wrath!! We will attack you! 1st and 10? Shotgun, ETN up the middle. And you will be destroyed!!!! We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

At least it usually makes positive yardage. Can't say that about trying to force passes to Ridley.
When you spend the entire 1st half running up the middle from shot gun and getting into 2nd and longs... That's not a good strategy.
I mean, I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. But I'd assume that eventually, if I'm always running up the middle on 1st and 10 from shot gun, maybe the opposition may be ready for it. We spend the entire 1st half, when the game was still ours, just running up the middle on every first down. We were predictable. We were easy to stop on 1st down. And so 2nd down was tougher than it needed to be. It was just a boring, uninspired game plan. We are clearly not good enough to just shove it down anyone's throats. And yet, for the entire 1st half that's all we did. We accepted that 1st and 10 would be a shotgun handoff to ETN for a yard. 2nd and 8 or 2nd and 9 every time you line up is a terrible place to be. But that's what we put ourselves on for the entire 1st half. It's trash play calling.
They ran ETN a lot on first down
Oddly, it was probably the 17th worst problem of the game We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Is it just me or do we never run outside, unless its like a pitch or some weird reverse?

I only see us call about 5-7 different plays, just slightly different formations run up the middle throw the ball to ridley throw the wr screen do some double reverse trickery that doesn't do anything and hasn't done anything We show less advertisements to registered users. Pass to Agnew which is then dropped
Or should that be the 3rd and long play? He's been great. I hope he gets 30 touches vs Atlanta (who have given up 353 yds and 4.2 YPC on the ground)
Well if it were me calling the defense I would jam the middle and have my DB's jump the short routes.

They are running outside by design about 5 times per game so far (6 vs Houston) That is probably a bit less than they did in many games last year. So - for those scrambling to blame Press Taylor for everything, I guess they could lament he calls inside runs a few times more per game than Doug did, LOL. (it's like the only part of our game working, but, whatever) They do have some creative blocking dialed up for the inside stuff at times, but unfortunately it seems to be just one more thing for this offensive line to screw up. ETN has been making lemonade of the blocking lemons he was saddled with. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! LOL, you love your hyperbole, don't ya? According to PFF, the run blocking has actually been pretty good. Just something to chew on while you are widdling the next straw man you'll throw my way. I'm not sure why it's such an offense to you to point out that running 1st down on every single down in the first half isn't the best strategy, to the point of resorting to insults and making up false assertions. I would just assume most football fans realize that being predictable on offense isn't the best strategy... I mean, even though ETN was doing a great job with the plays he was asked to run, we ended the first half with 0 points... I would say that being predictable helped contribute to our ineffectiveness. Yes, the drops also killed us. But the predictability didn't help, either.
Actually I thought we moved the ball ok. Well until we shot ourselves in the foot with a pretty good Keystone cops impression.

Just seems like to me, when you got an explosive back like ETN you'd try and get him outside more often (09-26-2023, 02:20 PM)ChrisJagBoy Wrote:(09-26-2023, 01:33 PM)NYC4jags Wrote: They are running outside by design about 5 times per game so far (6 vs Houston) I don't disagree, but you have to consider this 5 or 6 targets each week serve as an extension of the run and are almost always outside. So you're looking at 9 or 10 runs inside the tackles - 5 or 6 outside + 5 or 6 targets outside. It's not exactly lopsided. I'd be good with more of those stretch play styled outside zone runs. ETN is good at finding a crease with those. Although the KC defense shut those down when we tried them, so maybe what you saw Sunday reflected some hesitancy to call them due to the prior week's failure to create creases. |
