Trevor Lawrence: Franchise QB (TL Discussion, Merged Threads)

Not sure why this tweet is implying that Engram's ADoT is bad.  As proven last season, Engram is at his best getting yards after catch.  Getting him in open space on screens and crossers maximized his ability and production.  The Giants used him as a downfield option and he was inconsistent at best and was widely viewed as a bust during his stint there.

Bc he only has one second per route before Trevor has to throw or get hit lol
Correct.

That's was a beautiful play.

Also I wonder how many times Calvin Ridley will score a TD whilst sitting wide open alone in the endzone lol, he's 2/2 so far.

He makes the hard catches look easy and the easy catches look hard sometimes.

Was shocked he held onto that one on Sunday. He caught a rifle in week one and then drops a perfectly lobbed pass for a TD against the tinhorns.

Really hope Zay Jones is cleared to go this Sunday. I think if he was in the line up on Sunday that shot Lawrence took in the endzone to Hasty is probably something that goes to Zay instead scheme wise.

I will say, Trevor is the best QB this team has ever fielded to date and it's not close. I am kind of tired seeing all the over hyping and PFF nonsense where in year's past people would dismiss it tbh. I still do, it is a useless metric.

When you see a guy miss 1 wide open TD to Kirk, and another on 4th down where both are gimme TDs, you question if he fully understands what he is looking at out there. Sure, the defense made sure this game was never close, but against the true top tier teams in the AFC you likely won't have that luxury. The greats know what the defense AND his offense is doing. I don't expect the dude to be perfect, but you HAVE to hit the easy ones. Trevor routinely misses them. Our offense looks like it's painful to execute right now, nothing looks easy or smooth. Blame the line all you want, but the other teams in the NFL deal with it and look much, much cleaner. I do still hold out hope that Cam returns, we move one of our current tackles inside, and we gain a tick or two for Trev and the offense takes off. We need it if we want to be contending for a super bowl.

Is there a countdown clock I don't know about that indicates the moment Lawrence will turn into a pumpkin if you don't deem him elite? LOL
He's not on Mahomes level and he's never going to improvise like that. Not his game.
He needs at least an average NFL line to be as consistent as you are "requiring." Just like 95% of NFL quarterbacks always have. He has rare talents, but improvising and buzzing around like Kyler Murray or Mahomes when protection fails is never going to be a trait for him.

He's missed some open receivers. And he's 23 years old. You know as well as I do he hits Kirk for that TD yesterday if pressure from the left side doesn't force him to roll away from the play and away from the primary target.
It's amazing how many plays are being left out there because he doesn't half a second more time.

The mistakes he's making are minuscule when compared to those made elsewhere in our offense thus far - and compared to the general crapshow that is our OL.

He's not going to miss open receivers in 17 games. It should eventually level out between the line inching toward better play (hopefully) - the staff continuing to find ways to mitigate the bad line play - and Trevor occasionally transcending the bad protection.

The only question is whether or not he finishes the year on IR or not. He's being murdered while releasing completions and incompletions the past 3 weeks way too often.

Yes, it's Trevor's rookie contract. That's when the whole team turns into a pumpkin if you end up paying an above average QB top of the market.

So you're good with just letting TLaw head on out to free agency then?

This is a huge concern for owners/GMs.

The Chiefs paid Mahomes almost half a billion dollars to stay on the team, no problem he's considered the #1 QB and he's already brought another Superbowl trophy home. But then Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray and Deshaun Watson were all making more money with their new contracts, so they had to add on to the half a billion dollars to keep Mahomes.

How would you like your team to have all of that salary cap % tied up to Wilson, Jackson, and Murray?

Trevor has been playing really well, outside of Dropped Passes, Dropped TDS and Tipped pass into a INT. you are looking at another 200 Yards maybe 250 and 4 more TDs and 1 Less Int. and he is looking alot better than his stats show. We need to pay him cause he is the guy.

objection, the assertion was paying above average QBs top of the market money.

I *might* concede Lamar, but he's a scramble and hit away from being forced to rely solely on his arm.

LOLwut?

Yes, let's let the best quarterback we've ever had walk in free agency.

Teams that find any glimmer of hope at QB routinely pay them to explore whether he's good enough to take them to the show over time.
This is standard practice the league over since every year there are 10-12 teams who would kill for a QB that's "above average."

The league is littered with overpaid QBs who showed enough flash to get a big deal but weren't great in the end.

Trevor has at least shown some rare talent that could actually turn into something special if managed correctly.

If the wheels don't come off this season - you play the kid and lock him down long as you can without a second thought about it.

Yeah I get that, his first sentence pointing out how effective Trevor has been on deep passes is great.  It's his 2nd sentence pointing out Engram's low ADoT, implying Engram should be the recipient of some of those deep passes that I don't understand.  That just isn't Engram's game, as evidenced by his struggles in NY and great season last year.  Run Engram horizontally, not vertically.

That number for Engram probably could be a bit higher, but I don't think it's a big deal.

I agree.

I was more posting it for Trevor and did find the little Engram fact odd.

Once the line gets sorted out a bit all this will resolve itself.

Agreed , but will my calendar be reading 2024 when that finally happens?

Jokes aside tho, barring a complete meltdown from Trevor I think it'd be dumb not to work out his contract this offseason.
