He's not a problem right now except a few bad run fits. Fortner really wasn't good last year, but he protected for a tiny bit longer than he is currently. Let guys thru but not quite as quickly. I feel confident saying this as I rewatched 7 games from last season just focused on LG and C. He screwed up a lot in that film. But he was a rookie - so I tried to be patient about it. Patience is running thin now. You're right that he's regressed. I wonder if his health is a factor? He was on the injury report prior to week one I think. Nicked up in a preseason game maybe. But Sherff and Fortner played better last year than they have so far this year. Especially the last few weeks. Fortner is regressing, and Scherff is like a zombie out there. I remember week 1 against the clots, Scherff had his ankle rolled on and was out for a quarter or so. But there isn't ever any mention that he's not at 100%... I don't know if he's hobbled or what, but the dude is not getting it done out there right now. As for Fortner? pshhhh. He's just been disappointing. You'd think he'd be making progress from last year and not going backwards. The praising came at a few different points last year when Fortner was getting flowers for not giving up sacks even though he was giving up pressures and whiffing run blocks. Folks were locked onto little tweets from PFF and compliments from pundits who didn't watch film or work for the org. I'm not going to deny that I may have a bias against Scherff... There was a highlight from the Houston Game where Scherff just watched as a stunting linebacker just crossed right infront of him and Scherff didn't even notice it. Since then, I've been pretty down on the guy. Maybe he's not a zombie? But I don't know. That G-C-G combo we have to rely on right now isn't very inspiring. With that said, I didn't think Harrison's performance was as bad as the PFF grade he was given yesterday. I didn't notice pressure coming from the Right Tackle so much. And I've already mentioned that one of Cam's "mistakes" was really a self sack by Lawrence for bailing out of the pocket instead of climbing it or just going with his first deep read. I mean, these are all just opinions. Though I think I was sober enough at 9:30 to 1PM to remember enough. I'll admit one thing though. This O-Line is not nearly as good as it was last year. Trevor is releasing throws early. But I think the plan should be that we throw on 1st to get a few yards early, and then we can grind down the defense on 2nd and 3rd. Running on 1st has been killing our drives. I'd rather we go west coast offense and get ETN into space on 1st, and then let Kirk, Engram, and Ridley stretch the field wide and deep, respectively. Then you can come back to ETN on 2nd down after we've picked up 4 to 5 yards. Or the 1st down. And then we're at the 40 instead of the 20, and a run up the middle could be more dangerous. Down, distance, and field position are all important. The first 4 weeks of this season, the play calling seemed like they didn't care. It was going to be shotgun, ETN between the guards... Maybe they are doing this to mess with the better teams later in the season? I mean? Maybe that's what they are doing? Could it be they are telegraphing plays early so they can catch better teams off guard later in the season?
Establishing the run on early downs is the traditional method of setting up play action passing.
The Jags use play action at a rate just above the league average. So... I think that's getting stuck in your craw a bit because the play action wasn't being completed in the early weeks. Now it is. Scherff played better than you thought - but it's difficult to evaluate that watching the game one time. When I watch the all-22 I often see that my initial impressions were affected by the plays I noticed and limited by the plays I didn't. Hard to see it all at first glance.

It's been out the window for at least a decade. Look at the best teams now. They are pass heavy. Then they get their RB's into space, then they run them between the guards. That's new the thing now. Miami, SF, KC, Detriot. They all have good RBs, they all have good QBs. And they all have good WR or a good TE. We have all that. The only difference is that Miami, SF, KC, and Detriot rely on their QBs, and Jax is scared to give Lawrence that opportunity, so they run horizontal routes and first read routes. Yet, on 3rd down when we needed our QB to get things done, he by god, got things done. So why stifle our best player? Why not let our best player work with the talent we drafted and bought him?
LOL
You asked a question I answered it I'm keenly aware of the modern offensive trends even if you're mischaracterizing them You're also ignoring our OL deficiency again We're already letting Trevor get killed and your answer is to kill him faster Brilliant We show less advertisements to registered users. Of course, last week's game proves that if you have good play calling that isn't hyper conservative and easily predictable, we have talent enough to beat good teams. Eventually you'll figure it out. EDIT: Regarding your fanboy love of an Indy Center... who's QB is still playing and who's QB has been knocked out of several games. Hey, man. I get it. You need to try and find a narrative that works for you. But if you are trying to get Jaguars fans to love clot players, maybe you should reconsider what forum you want to moderate.... I've been the guy leading the charge about bad line play since middle of last season. Nothing has changed in that regard other than you showing up and being a total buffoon about play calling, game planning and Press Taylor. Sorry you don't know how an NFL staff build a playbook, plans for games, and then calls plays, but I refuse to continue your education. Someone else can teach you. And this post has NOTHING to do with any of that. I was merely suggesting we might need to take a good guard or center earlier than we have in recent drafts. If you weren't acting like a fool trying to "gotcha" me with something you might realize that.

Some dont come on here daily and beat a dead horse. With that said, Kelly was an elite C prospect out of Alabama and if an elite prospect falls to you at your pick you take him. They also took an elite G prospect with the 6th overall pick which was a very good pick as well. Looking back now Josh Allen would have been the best pick but Nelson is still a very good pick even though some would say you dont take a G that high. Is the QB's injury a result of the center's play, or the QB's choice to take unnecessary punishment? It would be different if Richardson took a DT diving at his knees and is out because of that, but come the farts on. Desperation isn't a good look, man.
Let's hope this is the beginning of a turnaround for the rookie!

My hat is off to the OL in week six.
Can't bash them every week and not recognize when they improve. It was only 30 attempts for 180 yards on lots of short fields - but they were better. First game yet this season the starters all graded above average in pass blocking. (except for Scherff's replacement - really bad pass Blk grade of 35) Haven't watched the all 22 and may not have time with my work week, but that is a great step up in PFF land anyway. Now - the run Blk grades need to follow suit: All in the 50's except Scherff/Hance (both 60) and Harrison (66) ![]() |
