Brian Sexton

Quote:I listen at the games. Adding Tony to the booth didn't help a thing. He was awful. Lageman is very good in the booth. I think Sexton is fine. After 20 years, he's the voice of the Jaguars.

I can't imagine hearing any other voice doing play by play on a Jaguars radio broadcast.

Boselli is horrible on radio, I don't care for sexton that much but i would be much happier with him staying and boselli leaving.  Lageman is the only one they've had since Vic left that's worth a dime.

...Until it happens, which at that point you'll realize just how bad Sexton has been at PBP compared to most of the rest of the NFL team announcers.

I've heard others. I had the radio pass a few seasons ago and heard most of them. Sexton is ok. I know how it offends you when someone has the nerve to have an opinion different than yours, but I can't soften the blow for you.

Sexton is a little corny for my taste - and the high level of excitement followed by the "tone of disappointment" on routine plays is a bit tiresome.

But- on the whole I'm un-offended by him and don't really care one way or the other.

I get that the days of Myron Cope and Howard Cosell are gone, but some sort of personality should be a prerequisite for the job. Sexton, to me at least, is just some guy. Some milquetoast, forgettable guy. He comes off as being very stiff and boring to me. I'm not saying we need some Wolfman Jack guy howling into the mic, but there doesn't seem to be a passion there. Even if the team looks abyssmal week in and week out, he should be able to feign excitement. Or emotion. I know this sounds like I am piling on the guy. Maybe I have just heard him say, 'check that' one too many times.
Only a chump boos the home team!

Exactly...and its funny because you can tell that on the occasions that he tries to show excitement - it seems forced or contrived - as some have mentioned with the excitement/ disappointed in quick turnabouts.

The thing is Sexton simply has never been a "natural" at the play by play gig. He never will be.

I agree with you that I want a Jags PBP voice that sounds like he belongs there. Khan upgraded everything else when he took over, so why stop here? Especially when the PBP voice is usually played on all of those national shows every week when the highlights are ran. Khan being image conscious should know that a better PBP voice will reflect better upon the team than what we have now.

This.  I don't think it's a big deal.  Off season topic.

Me too, him and Hicken both.  A little bit thick on the Gators, but still entertaining.

....and I have absolutely no issue with Sexton. Is he Merril Reese? No. But they could sure as hell do worse.

And I know it wasn't you, but to me Myron Cope sounded like a blithering idiot. Maybe he just got senile a la Harry Caray's later years. But from what I heard of him, made me wonder what the allure was.

I honestly think I have listened to just about every NFL team PBP announcer, and I'd put Sexton in the bottom 1/4th, easy. Saying "we could do worse" might be true....but barely.

Was Myron Cope the one that invented the "terrible towel"?

Yup. He was a wacky old coot, but he had personality. He would throw out some great euphamisms and hyperbolic statements. He had great energy even if his voice could be construed as annoying.

If you'd prefer a bonehead like that.....wow. I found him close to unlistenable.

So you've 'listened to just about every NFL play by play man' and you aren't sure who Myron Cope is? I find that really interesting since he was around since the stone age.

I didn't say I didn't know who he was, I asked about that one particular aspect....it was more in the context of making convo than actually "asking", but I guess when you're on "sharpshooter mission" to try and nit pick like you are...
