Still has work to do as a pass rusher but I see improvement. Let's see how it goes. Inside stunts are enough to get him matched against guards.

Travon Walker: 2nd Year Thoughts Etc (merged)

He’s pocket pusher. Let him do that from the middle.
Exactly. Which is what he did at Georgia.

This staff made a mistake in playing him at outside backer. He's clearly an inside, downhill bull rusher. Shorten his distance to the QB. Good things will happen.

We've wasted roughly 25 games now of this young man's career trying to pigeon hole him into something he's not.

I would start stacking him with Allen side by side on 3rd and long situations and let Smoot and Hamilton handle the opposite side moving forward.

I'll be shocked if they don't change it up during the bye week. They get one game to play over the course of 23 days and then it's a bunch of primetime games in November at home.

It's time to get the most out of him.

Trent looks bad if they end up trading Walker and he succeeds as a DL on another team. Because they didn't think to do that in the first place. If this was indeed Caldwell wanting Walker in the draft, he made a huge mistake at putting him in the wrong position.

Or....if this was due to the NFL script writers wanting Hutchinson to go to the Lions and forced the Jaguars to choose Walker.

Who knows. Bottom line: It's not working at OLB.

EDIT: Also, down-right terrible when he can't win against 2nd or 3rd team players.

Travon Walker feels like a hyper athletic Tyson Alualu. In both cases it's not their fault they were drafted too high, or that they're miscast in a defense based on projection vs what they actually do well.

I'd like to see Walker inside on 3rd and long or obvious pass rush situations; but I think they should utilize him the same way we did Calais Campbell. LDE with his hand in the dirt in 4-3 base, and get him on a guard in an obvious throwing situation. He has versatility and is a cheatcode at blowing up screens and plays that try and get a numbers advantage in space; but you draft a guy at the top of the first round to rush the passer and he's not there yet. I think he needs to learn a spin/counter move that he can go to if his bull rush gets stonewalled.
Championship Formula:

1) Draft Trevor Lawrence!
2) Play good physical Defense!
3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy!
4) ???
5) Blank #2
6) CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Agreed although at this point, it's not unreasonable to start wondering if Alualu will have been a bit better player by the time Walker finishes his career. Still early though, so there's time. Playing him out of position is not really helping his development but switching to a full time 4-3 at this point would be next to impossible.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

It wouldn't surprise me if there isn't some truth to this. Baalke needs to put his ego aside and trade for Hunter. Many knowledgeable people on this Forum strongly believe that Walker is not being utilized properly. While he is unlikely to ever become a very productive Edge rusher in the current scheme, he does have traits which would enable him to excel if moved to the defensive line. The defense as a whole has really stepped up this season and the addition of Hunter would enable Walker to move to the line which, in my opinion, would put this team over the top.

I think the posters on this board have hit the nail on the head. Play Walker where he can be elite, not put him where you wish he could play. While he might be overdrafted, if he was dominating inside, I don't think we would really care. We are setting him up to be viewed as an epic bust by insisting he play out of position.

I wish we could have that Draft over. Every time I watch Aiden Hutchinson make a sick I throw up a little more in my mouth. As bad as Urban Meyer was, at least he got the 2021 First Round right.

TBF my Grandmother could have got TLaw right.

ETN was a great pick but we lucked out with the Giants taking Toney.

That draft was really good overall though so I ain't gonna bash Urbs too much

Would Calais or Buckner be considered a disappointment? He can be that guy if we just let him lol

Idk, I saw him getting plenty of push on Thursday and remember thinking that Carr was getting the ball out extremely quickly.

I do think lining him up elsewhere is a good idea. Just like they do with smoot sometimes. Get Travon and Smoot inside with Chaisson and Allen outside. Like the old “lightning package” under Bradley. I’m obvious pass situations.

He got more than the 1st round right. I hate to admit it with how rotten he was. I'm sure him and his coaching staff had most of the influence on the 2021 draft. Little, Cisco, Campbell, Farrell. If Trent had full control over the selections, it would look much different aside from Lawrence.

The luck our organization had had over the years, I was expecting we’d screw it up and take Zach Wilson or Trey Lance.

I'm perfectly fine with admitting that Urban has an eye for talent--that's a huge part of being a college coach.  Keep in mind, though, that this dude planned to take Toney, then tried to convert Etienne to WR and signed Tebow to play TE.

Recruiting he definitely had an eye for, but it all broke down when he couldn't hold leverage over grown men who are millionaires the way he could college kids.  Great recruiter, terrible coach.

Baalke definitely had some input there, though.  Let's not pretend that he isn't also doing pretty well stockpiling talent.  His big miss is Walker, but we're not talent poor.

In respect to Toney, I think the talent is there. Injuries have been killing his career. He started his career on fire and then it became injury after injury. Thought he’d be doing better in KC but he’s playing second fiddle to Travis Kelce and there are about 12 different options to throw to. Now they brought Hardman back.

But man, if we could have had Hutchinson. Ugh. That guy is a monster.

I think a large part of Hutchinson's success is scheme, but we can't even scheme Walker to get rushes apparently.  Certainly a big miss at 1.

I still don't want to call him a miss, we have four years total to find out where he plays better. I think as long as the team is winning and the defense is playing well they would not move Walker inside, they are playing so well that maybe moving any piece can mess with the defense.
