Still has work to do as a pass rusher but I see improvement. Let's see how it goes. Inside stunts are enough to get him matched against guards.

Travon Walker: 2nd Year Thoughts Etc (merged)

(This post was last modified: 10-31-2023, 12:14 PM by Caldrac.)

Waiting on this guy to drop his week 8 snippets on Walker. Easier to see exactly what he did in the game as a whole.

At the start of the season, he was constantly rushing so wide that he was going way past the QB.  But it looks like he's finally figuring out how to use leverage in in bull rushing, or maybe it's the location of where he's beginning to engage the Tackle that is allowing him to really begin to push and get closer to the QB on his edge rushes.

Against the squeelers, he was all over the place.  He was causing pressure in passing plays and he was sniffing out misdirection rushing plays.  There was one specific play in the 3rd quarter where it looked like they were going to pass it, but they did a delay draw to the RB.  Walker who was on the edge engaged the Tackle, but didn't actually rush in and waited to see if the RB was gonna get the ball.  Sure enough, Picket handed the ball off to the RB, but TRAVON was right there to kill the play.  If Walker had just went blindly into a pass rush, the RB would have had a free 10 to 15 yards.

I was pretty down on Walker about 5 to 6 weeks ago.  But if he keeps improving like he has the last 3 weeks...  the sky's the limit.

We're taking the Andy Dufresne approach with Travon Walker.

I think this pretty much sums up everything ....

Reminds me of that Bruce Lee quote, "Be like water".

It's pretty obvious something has begun to really click for Travon.

It's true he's still mainly a "bull rusher".  But it's more nuanced than that now.  He's engaging blocks differently than he did last year or even at the start of this season.  Whether he'll ever be a Von Miller or not is one thing.  But he's clearly an every down tackle which makes him very valuable.

If he keeps progressing, he deserves a 2nd contract from us.  You don't let guys like this go... A disruptor with a high motor that can pressure passing plays and is exception in run defense?  fuggetaboutit (this is not avoiding the auto mod.  it's a term meaning "forget about it")

At the least he never gives up on the play. I have seen him run upfield to try and get back into plays. Probably not the first overall guy quality but not a #becausejaguars moment either.

He is a key reason for us being so stout against the run. I admire his game and look forward to following his career as a Jaguar.
Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

Jaguars EDGE pressure and win-rate rankings (per PFF) among 110 players with at least 50 rushes.

Josh Allen: 18th in pressures, 31st in win rate
Travon Walker: 34th in pressures, 44th in win rate
K'Lavon Chaisson: 90th in pressures, 105th in win rate

I think his game awareness is a highlight of his name,  he isn't a out and out pass rusher so I think comparing him to someone like Hutchison isn't really the way to go.

Super interested to see how he fairs against CMC and SF

I'd be fine if it happened like that.  He can get a TD on our 2nd string D

Frankly the defense is not nearly as good without him.

Folks looking for a premier pass rusher will probably never be satisfied and I’m not sure if that’s even what he was drafted to be.

What is, is a premier wrecking ball. He may already be one of the top 2-3 edge run defenders in football with a developing pass rush game.

I think what’s important to realize is as raw as he was coming in, im not sure your going to see his peak until into year 3 or 4. If he ultimately ends up as a reliable 8-10 sack guy with the impact he has everywhere else he’s going to be one helluva player.

Some really good tape there on Walker against Pittsburgh. He was absorbing several double teams and chip blocks throughout the course of the game. He was also running quite a few stunts back inside. He was around Pickett a lot and very disruptive in regards to making him get rid of the football or at times even flushing towards Allen and away from him.

I think I would like to see him taking less of those wide approaches though. He seems to often times get blanketed in those stances. The further away he is from the pocket, the less impactful he is. That could also be by design though and it's intentional. So, no harm or foul. Been saying it though. He's overdue for a monster game and it's possible he gets it this Sunday against the 49ers.

Hopefully Walker goes off kind of like Allen did down the stretch last season.

That's nice to see.

By my count he aversely affects the passer or play on 6 of those pass rushes. That is quite significant.

I didn't count the chips and double teams he absorbed, but it may have been 8-10 times?
Also significant when evaluating the second year project.

He's definitely on the ascent this year even if it isn't meteoric.  Hope we see more of that trend.

I don't think all of those were calling for him to rush the passer either as at least in a few of the clips it looked like he was more interested in setting the edge and containing than necessarily getting to Pickett.
