Titans to hire Brian Callahan for HC

Yes the floor is high, just look at the Jags, but in those same 6 years, the Jags won the division 2 times also. He is a wash with the Jags at the end.(01-23-2024, 01:47 PM)p_rushing Wrote: We won't know for a year or 2 but Taylor has said it is a committee. The last 2 years the Bengals have struggled and Callahan actually took over the play calling duties and they were better. I don't know if he will be successful or not but it definitely isn't a downgrade unless you are fine being stuck in middle without a way to get better. There is more risk with the coaching change but the ceiling is a lot higher. They are looking at potentially a top offensive mind. Vrabel never went out and tried to find someone like this for the offense. If he did that instead of just promoting from within after his 1st year, maybe he is still there with his defensive coaching ability. They just snagged our passing game coordinator to be their offensive coordinator up there. That's pretty interesting. Two years in a row now we've lost a passing game coordinator to a divisional rival for essentially a promotion.

They took forever to figure out that Ridley needs to go in motion to be effective. He’s a little undersized to be the alpha at the line. I recall KC’s Sneed getting very handsy with Ridley and making him disappear. Jim Bob Cooter should’ve been promoted to offensive coordinator. He was more of a loss than Holz.

To be fair - motioning your X wide receiver is probably near the top of the list for every coordinators compilation of "stuff I never want to do" Most would much rather be moving backs, TEs, Z's, and Y's more than they want to motion their X. So it's natural that in the player's return to football year - that wasn't part of the initial plan. I also think that Ridleys season of 1000+ yards and 8 touchdowns after not playing since October 2021 was pretty solid given the OL and injured QB. If the pass game coach gaffed anywhere - I think it was the way they mismanaged those route details on the perimeter between Lawrence and Ridley. Even when lined up in press man on the outside - Ridley was dealing with most of those corners pretty well. They should have been dialing up the back shoulder throws on many of those routes instead of trying to create 50/50s or waiting on Rid to outrun coverage. The few times they did that were glorious - but they rarely went back to it.

Sure he is unproven as a HC but it's not a bad hire unless you just think retreads are great. Rumors are BC seat is already starting to get a little warm. If Levis doesn't throw Ridley out of bounds, they probably score or come darn close. Levis overthrew his target on fourth down, but he had a guy. We get the ball late and run 3 straight for minimal gain, sure we eat some clock, but they still got the ball back, drove, and dang near stole it from us. A well coached team gets that first down and never gives them a chance. What great coaching was going on out there? It was just a pairing of two poorly talented teams showing who could be least awful.

Everyone seems to have assumption that Vrabel was so much better. But the Titans still have that hard nose physical mindset, and the defense has not fall off as much as would be expected this year after Vrabel left. Sure they are tougher in secondary, and weaker in run defense compared to prior years. But they also have the same bad offense from 23 compared to like 22 and 21. I just wonder if expecting Vrabel to be a great hire in this next cycle is a bit of an overstatement. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Vrabel is one of the better coaches in this league and I'd much rather Vrabel than a rookie Callahan that has never even called plays if I had to pick between the 2. It would be a very easy decision lol. Tennessee had the worst oline in the league and Vabrel got more out of that team than most expected, hell they knocked us out of the playoffs. He took them to the AFC Championship game a few years ago when nobody thought they would make it that far. They gave Mike a bottom 5 roster, the worst oline, and no QB. I would take Vrabel over Bill Callahan as well. I think they regret firing Vrabel but I'm glad they did. Vrabel was a much better close and its not even close lol. He made the playoffs in 3 of his 6 years there and one year taking them to the AFC Championship. In his worst season there he won 6 games and had a winning record in 4 of the 6. A lot of those Ten teams over performed when Vrabel was the coach. It was underrated with what Vrabel did with those teams imo. If they would have kicked a FG instead of going for in on 4th they would have won the game, they could have just kicked a FG at the end to win it. . They tried to throw it too much when their run game was looking great as well. Callahan is an offensive coach that put up 6 poing against the worst D in the league at home lol. It's not comparison really. Ask any Titans fan who the better coach is.

Vrabel won mostly when he had Arthur Smith and Matt LaFleur as OC's and possibly the last HoF elite RB in a watered down AFC South division. He gets some credit for finding those guys and recognizing that he should use a run and pound offensive system. But key points for Vrabel is that he is supposed to elevate the physicality, culture and defense. I was mainly pointing the Titans still have a good defense and still demonstrate physicality. It may be too early to evaluate their culture right now, so I'll give that Vrabel. All I'm saying is that he is no where close to a slam dunk hire. And bringing him here would be highly contingent on who he targets for OC, how he plans on keeping the OC for sometime and the pipeline for when that OC leaves if the Jags do well. That is a very shaky foundation for a new coaching staff. (12-14-2024, 08:49 PM)rpr52121 Wrote:(12-14-2024, 12:37 PM)flgatorsandjags Wrote: Vrabel was a much better close and its not even close lol. I'll also like to add, when you have a player like Derrick Henry, in his prime - you tend to beat alot of teams. Bringing Vrabel here does nothing for Trevor. Besides maybe limits his turnovers? To the first point, I'd put a lot more weight into D. Henry's ability than I do in Vrabel's ability to coach up mediocrity. It was pretty safe to say that if you could shut down their run game, they wouldn't get far in the postseason. To the second bit, what? Are you saying kick a FG with 1:15 on the clock to make it 10-9 is smart coaching? And again, we let them run a 10-play drive and eat up 5 minutes of clock getting to the 9. The throw OB stopped the clock (bad throw, not a coaching thing) and they had 4th and 3. Chose to go for it all, and their guy was not blanketed, nor did our D make a fantastic play. It was an overthrow. None of that is us being super-smart. It's more a case of our failure just being less failsome. There was no outcoaching. Neither coach demonstrated any capability in that situation. It was very impressive what he did with those Tack teams. Would love to bring Vrabel here if he could find the right OC. Learning under one of, if not the best coach of all time helps as well. Kicking a FG to make it 10-9 with 1:15 on the clock is absolutely a smart play going against the Jags with Mac Jones at QB is almost guaranteed a win. Callahan failed his team on that one and the reason they lost. It was good to see Doug outcoach 1 guy this year.
He might be one and done. Hopefully they keep him around another year though before they cut bait lol
