Yeah certainly, let's take a look at the top 4 highest paid QBs at the start of last season.

Burrow - first 3 years - 82 TDs - 31 ints - 11,774 passing yards (despite missing most of his rookie season to injury
Mahomes (first 3 years starting, played one game rookie season) - 114 TDs - 23 ints - 13868 passing yards.
Jackson (first 3 years, barely played rookie season) 95  TDs (19 Rushing/78 passing) 18 ints 7,085 passing yards, 2,906 rushing yards.
Herbert (first 3 years) 94 TDs - 35 ints - 14,089 passing yards

So now let's say Trevor slides in at #5 in his new contract.
Trevor Lawrence (first 3 years) 58 TDs - 39 Ints - 11,770 passing yards. 

In what world is he even remotely close to the above mentioned? Burrow missing half a season or so his rookie year still completely outclasses him in TDs. Lamarr while being considered a run first QB still demolishes him in passing TDs
Herbert and Mahomes statistically are insane when you look at passing numbers alone. 


He is not a top 5 QB, he may be a low end top 10 QB but he does not deserve a mega deal. 


I even left out the worst stat to help his case, his absurd 33 fumbles would make this worse.

Simply put, if you want him here you are going to pay 5-10 money. You're paying for potential, not past. Trevor has shown that he is capable. Granted, had he blown the doors off in his first three years, we'd be facing a market-setting deal (as Burrow, Mahomes got).

I don't see Lawrence being the guy that holds out or demands raising the bar for the rest of the league at his position. But I also know that if we don't make an offer in that range, plenty of other franchises would leap at the opportunity. You might start you offer at 10. After the haggling, you end up say 5-7. End of the world? I think not.

Would you rather we let him walk and spend another decade swinging at guys like Gabby or Bortles to carry the franchise? Look at how many teams each year take a sing early to fix their franchise. How many hit? If you have a guy that appears to have the traits, and can keep you in the dang hunt year in and year out, you don't move on over a few (relatively) dollars.

Prepare yourself. It's going to happen.

I would wait. Year two with Stroud is going to be interesting. Slowik will have to start counter balancing a lot of things now as a coordinator as well.

I think that loss to the Ravens showed you how to effect him as a passer and that running around stuff in the pocket is cute until you get popped and end up missing two games with a concussion.

They now have the pressure to repeat in 2024 just like we did in 2023. He thrives off play action though and that's where this new defensive coaching staff is going to have to focus on and get these guys to stay disciplined.

Everybody thought RGIII had 'it' after year one. Everybody thought Mac Jones had 'it' after year one. [BLEEP] happens all the time in the NFL.

I can see both sides of the argument here. The last half of this past season opened up discussion we didn't anticipate. Is Trevor only slightly better than pedestrian with a turnover problem, or did the bad OL force mistakes? Some QBs need more protection than others. Brock Purdy would not be as productive without that wall in front of him, whereas Mahomes would show signs of stress but could still make good things happen. Lawrence falls more to the Purdy side of the scale. He's forcing plays to compensate for a bad OL and the mistakes are piling up while production plummets.

Make the OL a priority this season and hold off renewing his contract until we see if that facilitates the production we expect. Then, we pay him accordingly. No?

This is the Josh Allen (OLB) conundrum.

Do you do the deal a little early, based on potential, or do you wait until the potential becomes production, and now have to pay the full premium?

I think if they do the deal this year, there's a bit of a discount built in based on less than stellar stats, but if we build everything and it shows us he is who (most of) we thought he is, we're looking at top of the market level deals.

He ain't throwing picks six like Bort was wont to do; the fumbles are bad, but I still think so much of it is the necessity to improvise or rush behind sloppy or untalented blocking; the team plays for him and we aren't dealing with (for now) lacking confidence among the ranks, as was the way things were when Bort was bouncin em off of feet and hats.

I am pretty certain the deal gets done, whether this year or next; best case is that the deal helps the cap in a way that we can surround him with talent to realize the potential that everyone has expected. If that means we have to hold off and risk a bigger deal next offseason so we can fix the present ills, so be it.

Year four is important for me as a fan and for him most importantly. As it will go a long way in determining his overall future value wise in the NFL when contract talks start up. We'll see what happens.

Baalke and Co. still have to repair and upgrade the issues they have along the offensive line for starters. Then, we'll have to look at the metrics and determine if that's the case or not with Lawrence.

I am confident the kid will put on a show though if they fix the main five up front for him. It's not a foregone conclusion but it'll be pretty damn close.

No one here is thinking otherwise, it's just that now TLaw, who received an invite this year, has the same number of Pro Bowls as Gardner Minshew who was selected after him this season. It's just dumb to have something like that as part of the career evaluation taken to determine HoF entrance.
