Jaguars Special Teams Talk

#1

As someone else pointed out in another thread, we could of won a lot more games last year if some kicks are made & I'm not talking about 50+ yards either. Whether or not our draft pick can fix that issue will be found out in due course

Its great we have our bread and butter in cooke who we know can consistently deliver each gamr with his punts

I feel like the Jags special teams this year are going to be a force to be reckoned with, we invested in free agency and the draft in specialists who should hopefully give us that edge

I don't mean to nit pick , but those 2 kicks were at crucial points if I remember.

The disaster game against Cleveland where Trevor got injured, didn't he miss 2 kicks to send it to OT & for a extra point ?

McManus missed 7 FGs from 40 or more yards. He was 16/23 from 40+

McManus missed a 48 yard FG vs the Bengals with 4:59 left in the 4th quarter, which would have put the Jaguars in the lead 31-28.

Missed it wide right.

The game went into overtime bc the Bengals went down and got a FG and then McManus made a FG after that which tied the game 31-31. Ridley caught a pass on the goal line but Anton Harrison was flagged for holding which forced the Jaguars to punt. Cincy gets the ball and goes down for a game winning FG.

This type of stat is misleading.  He missed 2 FGs from between 40-49 yards (11 of 13).  In fact he only missed those 2 FGs for all attempts under 50 yards.  It was 50+ where he was 5 of 10 and his accuracy took a dive which isn't all that uncommon.  You'd like better accuracy at 50+, but those guys aren't just wandering around on the street.  He wasn't a bad kicker, he just had that one critical miss against the Bengals which contributed to us losing that game and by extension the division and a playoff berth.  I vaguely recall there being mention of a bad handling of the snap by the holder on that one as well, but I could be mis-remembering.

Hopefully Cam Little has both the distance and accuracy working for him.

Just need to find somebody named Walker Robinson to complete the circle. Baalke straight up playing games with the roster in plain sight.

His favorite position to draft too.

The team actually used 2 draft picks on special teams this year.
Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

I am really wondering how the teams adapt to the new kickoff rules. This off season those ST coaches have their work cut out. Both kicking off and returning strategies will be interesting.

I’m going to hate the kick off change and on side kick change for a while. I understand the reasoning, but it still sucks.

I am honestly concerned with special teams this year. Rookie kicker, rookie return man and then you add the new rules with a squad that had it's up's and down's last year.

Special Team's is going to more than likely going cost great teams some good wins and give bad teams some ugly wins.

Especially during the International games. I can see a lot of mental lapses happening with that.

I was a little skeptical of the pick being 2 kickers went off the board right before Little making it looked like we panicked a bit with us wanting a kicker.  Taking a deeper look at it some had Little as the top kicker with Kiper being one of them.  I think all 3 were rated pretty close and some teams probably had them rated differently.

All 3 are good but we drafted the youngest.  The Alabama kicker is 23 and the Stanford Kicker is 22 while Lillte isn't even old enough to drink yet.  The Alabama kicker played 5 years in college, the Stanford kicker player 4 years, Little played 3 years.  That's the 3 kickers that went in the 6th round and the only kickers drafted
