Scenes from day one at the Open in Pinehurst if you're interested. Today started practice rounds. Weather was great. Traffic not so much. Lots of busses, Sprinter vans and other vehicles shuffling folks around. If I had an entrepreneurial mind and loads of patience I could make some serious money this week. As it is, I don't care.

The return to the original Donald Ross design of sand and whip grass along the fairways was breaking good players wholesale. Bryson and Rory played it masterfully, though. They extricated themselves with good shots. I think the secret is to not get greedy. Just get the ball out and rolling in the direction needed. My son sent a screenshot of a tweet which said Rory had been 496-for-496 within that distance before that putt. I wanted Dechambeau to win, but that putt was heartbreaking to watch. He won’t sleep well tonight.
Very exciting U.S. Open. I'd have to say McElroy lost it more than Bryson won it. He has failed to handle the big moments in more than 1 Major since his last win 10 years ago. Like him or not, Bryson is great for golf and has probably not won his last Major.

McIlroy missed two three foot putts that would have iced it in the last four holes. DeChambeau tried his damnedest to give it to him. ![]()
Bryson was never penalized for his poor driving by the course that seemed to penalize everyone else. Takes luck to win these things and nobody caught him. Good for him, seems like a good dude.

McIlroy watched $2M dollars melt away, which is really meaningless to him. I'm sure the title means much more to him than the money. He has plenty of that.
Him quickly storming away from the grounds after Bryson putted in the winner was classic emotive Rory McIlroy. He's such a drama queen sometimes.
Also, Rory needs a professional caddie. His best friend on the bag has cost him countless wins.

He has plenty of that. 2M is gas money for him. Probably just a flood of emotion. He carried the water for Monahan for a year only to get stabbed in the back for his effort. At this point, I wouldn't blame Rory for taking the LIV bag.

Flying 2 greens you can't go over, driver on 18 when 3 wood has left 130 in all week. Rory needs a new bag man that step in and not be best friend. He will recover and win again, but it may need to be with a larger lead. Those missed 3 footers leave permanent scars. The Johnson Wagner and Bryson content after the tourney was gold. Wagner stuffer it! https://x.com/GolfChannel/status/1802508...KrwVA&s=19

On the 2-1/2 footer he missed, it seemed to me he took an unnecessarily long backswing. Any hacker knows that on a short putt like that, a shorter backswing leaves a lot less chance for error. It's all about face alignment, and with a long backswing, you can get deceleration and that can cause you to close the blade and pull the putt. I know these guys are pros, and they don't need to think about stuff like that with the skill level they have, but in that situation, shorten the backswing and just make sure the putter face stays aligned with the hole. I'm a [BLEEP] golfer, but even I know that.

Poor Rory. He flubbed a divorce and a major championship all in the space of two weeks. The guy is not in a good place.

Flying 2 greens nearly impossible to get up and down from, and hitting driver on 18 the first time of the week when 3 wood left him with 130 yards every other day. Bad decision making that a senior caddy would help with. This isn't the first tournament bad decision making has lost Rory. Rory would be wise to see if Steve Williams wants back in the game. Any caddie would kill to be on that bag. Harry isn't cutting it.
They're playing this year's Open Championship at Royal Troon. There is a house smack dab in the middle of Royal Troon.
