Good Bad Ugly

In limited action Lawrence looked comfortable moving the offense. Morse is giving me Brad Meester vibes and he looks like a great fit.
Etienne had a nice receiving TD and Bigsby looks like he has his confidence back and poised to give us a boost in 2024. He has some nice runs and a big return. Parker Washington was electric in the return game. He put them boys on roller skates and took some ankles on his 74 yard kick return. If the defender didn’t come back from out of bounds after getting his ankles broke in half, Washington would have took it to the house. Blake Hance played like a backup. He was getting bulldozed which caused a couple of runs to get stuffed. On one pass play I couldn’t figure out what Hance was looking at but him and Morse was doubling the NT and it looked like Hance was expecting a stunt from the left side but he had his head turned to the left while helping Morse double the nose tackle, and at one point he appeared he thought the football was already thrown and he just stopped playing and stood there. It’s kinda tough to explain what he was doing. Brian Thomas had a nice grab, but the coaches will be on his back about blocking and not being engaged during running plays. You see it happen every play in high school football when the ball is snapped for whatever reason, players will take 2 or 3 steps and begin to block, only to stop and watch what is happening. I don’t want my 1st round pick getting rolled up on during the preseason but I hope he gets that worked out come week 1. He’s a big bodied receiver and needs to be able to block and be aggressive and not trying to watch the game during a run play. Atleast run a dummy route and occupy the CB. It’s also a give away other teams will pick up in film study because Thomas ain’t firing off the line and then engaging in a block. I’m betting they will have that cleaned up by next week. Other than that he had a big time catch. It was encouraging to see Abdullah chase down Wentz for a sack. He looks like he bulked up since last year. Gipson was gettin active out there. I like his motor flying around. Muma had a series where he made 2 back to back solo tackles. One of them a back swung out of the backfield and Muma hit him with a text book tackle. Cam Little can boom the football. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Braswell with great awareness to strip the ball for the what should of been pick 6
Travon Walker looks like a monster. He's huge and quick. Looks like a different level player.
Trevor was on point on almost every throw he made. The dline as a whole got a lot of push.
Besides Morse getting smoked on a redzone run and Scherf giving up a pressure on the second drive not a lot to complain about.
I’d like to know what Trevor was thinking on the 4th down. Looked like he was wanting the deep shot. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
It was nice getting to attend the first game, even though it doesn't count. Stopped getting season tickets after 25 years due to the heat factor. Now for the good, bad and ugly:
Good: 1. Walker is in for a big year with the changes in scheme. Won't be hearing much Aiden Hutchinson remorse if Walker stays healthy. 2. Loved the touchdown pass to Etienne. I expect him to catch more passes this season. 3. Bigsby looked good, however I'll reserve my enthusiasm for when the games really count. His improvement is critical since Etienne can't continue playing so many snaps. 4. Maason Smith didn't make any big plays, but the guy is huge and can really move. They did have to double him on at at least one play. No doubt he will need development, but once he begins to feel really comfortable opponents will have to account for him along with Walker and Allen. With Hamilton healthy, the pass rush can be very good with Smith on the inside. I criticized this pick on draft day as depth on the interior offensive line seemed more important, but I'll be very glad to admit my mistake if Smith comes through. 5. Morse seemed to do a good job in his first game as a Jaguar. He will make a huge difference on the offensive line. 6. Parker Washington may likely turn out as one of the best value draft picks the team has ever made. He fell to the 6th round due to lack of speed. I watched all his college games as a Penn State alumnus and the guy just makes plays. Not only should he be a very good return-man, but he is likely to earn more snaps as a receiver. The Bad: 1. Offensive line depth still a big concern. I don't trust guys like Van Lanen, Fortner and Hance if they are forced to play due to injury to a starter. Still not sure about Hodges despite his hype prior to injury. 2. While the secondary appears deeper, I'm still not sure about the starters besides Campbell. Darby has good experience, but gets hurt often and Jones may not yet be ready to start at nickel. Braswell can be the wildcard as he had a very good camp. 3. Harrison and Cleveland being out already is not a good sign ( see point 1). They need to both stay healthy along with the other starters. The Ugly: I'll leave this blank for now.Overall, the team looked good for the first pre-season game and the absence of turnovers is a good sign. Yeah, you don't just hold on to the ball on a 4th down play. Throw it away or throw it up for grabs down field and hope someone makes a play. If it gets intercepted then it would likely give the opponent worse starting position. That was definitely a "coverage sack" as Trev had plenty of time in the pocket; the Oline shouldn't take any heat for that play. Not really a big deal, but it isn't the best way to leave a game.

Meh. It’s preseason. I’m not concerned at this point. I was actually more impressed he actually held onto the ball while getting hit from behind for once The Ugly is Fortner. My god he’s still just as bad or maybe worse. He’s solely responsible for that bad sack on Mac. You could cut him and find someone off the street and get better play at this point.
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS

At the beginning of camp when it was reported that he was struggling on the sled is when I started thinking he won't make the team this year. Pillow Fortner, you had an offseason to put the work in at the gym in and it was clear early on you hadn't done that. Bye. I think he makes the throw in a real game. He wanted a deep shot to BT7 and by the time he brought his eyes down he was staring down the barrel of the rush. Maybe wasn’t trying to take that hit in preseason but idk.
I thought Braswell, Tank and Washington were the stars of the game. Draft, develop and repeat.
Respect the game. Play with a sense of urgency.
1.) Take care of the ball. Win the turnover battle. 2.) It's all about 3rd down. Win on 3rd down to win the game. 3.) Playmakers make plays. The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays. Learn from the great collapse of 2023. Not really a big deal, but it isn't the best way to leave a game. Engram did not make his second break of the route until almost the exact moment TL saw the pressure coming in his right peripheral. He probably let's that fly in a reg. season game. He pulled it down last night and flushed. No biggie. Honestly - the play call should have had two options that didn't require him to hold the ball 2.8 seconds before the break move of the nearest receiver. That one is on Press IMO. Too long of a developing route on the only underneath option when you need 5 yards on 3rd or 4th down. TL should have had a quicker dump off option in that situation. The haters will hate me for this, but we are seeing quite a lot of development from Baalke's second year picks through camp and one preseason game. I hope it is more than just preseason flashes. If Strange gets involved in this trend, some folks are going to be eating even more helpings of GM-crow around here. (08-11-2024, 03:58 PM)nhiverson Wrote: Oline looked bad still The 4th down sack saw pressure after 2.95 seconds according to my stop watch. That's not a bad sack on the OL. That's the result of calling a long developing play on 4th and 5 and watching the blitzing 5th rusher run right past your RB who was meant to pick him up. Not on TL, not on the line, that's on Press Taylor and/or Travis Etienne if you ask me.
Thanks for these insights. I didn't watch the game and haven't been able to look at much y'all have shared from training camp. Been a lot going on lately.

Didn't like see Morse whiff on the run block near the goaline. Overall though the blocking was okay but not great. Pass blocking was better than run blocking but don't expect to see much in the way of unique rush packages from the defense in a preseason game. Overall though I thought the starting oline looked a little soft. More athletic than physical.
I thought Lawrence looked good. Not sure what happened on the 4th down play. based on some comments maybe he was looking for the deeper route first instead of Engram. I've always wondered if something like this is a weakness in his game. Would an elite QB instinctively know who is most likely to come open and look their first? Or as the play develops would the elite QB come off the deeper route earlier allowing them to see Engram? Does he focus on the initial read a split second longer than he should? Maybe too critical. ________________________________________________ Scouting well is all that matters. Draft philosophy is all fluff. Overall though I thought the starting oline looked a little soft. More athletic than physical. He does look for the deeper route instinctively, and that's a really good thing most of the time. Not a weakness. Situational awareness could be better at times in that regard - but not really in this case. The underneath route on the sack took 2.8 seconds to get uncovered because the play call had Engram fake outside then shift back inside. Not a wise call on 4th and 5 with a blitzer matched on a RB. Would have been better to have another shallow route to choose from minus the double move instead of sending 3 guys intermediate or deep. Trevor had to wait beyond 2.5 seconds to throw it and that is a no-no on 3rd or 4th down when a blitz is anticipated. The line + a RB in protection aren't going to hold up beyond 2.5 seconds very often at all according to all the accumulated data collected over the past several years. |
