The wholesaler's cost went up to acquire and store the eggs, sort them and transport them to Publix went up.  Is it "price gouging" for the wholesaler to sell them to Publix for $5 per dozen?

Publix has to store the eggs, pay someone to stock the shelves and sell them.  Is it "price gouging" for them to sell the eggs for $6 per dozen?

Publix has many competitors.  Including new entrants like Kroger delivery and Aldi.  Publix's profits will only rise as high as the competition lets them rise.

My wife is extremely loyal to Publix.  They always have everything she wants and she is always happy with the quality.  Maybe it's just conditioning over her two-plus decades of shopping for herself in FL, but the competition is mostly meaningless to her.  I don't have that kind of loyalty.  But if I go anywhere else, I know I'm sacrificing something in terms of variety, freshness, or crowds and congestion.

I will say though, if someone could show that Publix was doing things to prevent competition, like bullying certain suppliers to give other grocery stores inferior terms, that would be illegal and hopefully their competitors would sue.

I totally understand profits and have the benefit taking advantage of rental increases and such (although I limited the impact to existing tenants), so I'm not complaining about the capital system, but I do think there are limits that should be considered so the consumer is not gouged.

Personally, the Publix price increases don't impact us because we can easily afford groceries at any cost and have alternatives if we so desire.  I can drive to Winn Dixie and Walmart but there are others (especially the aging who don't have modes of alt transportation) that rely on their local store, so they are bound by increases of a certain grocer.

Same applies to gas prices.  Big oil has no problem recording record profits at the expense of the consumer.  Just thankful none of these cost increases really has any detrimental impact on any of us, but that's not a reason to ignore it and place some controls on certain consumer necessities.   I do find it ironic that people here were just complaining about grocery prices but when Kamala mentions something, all the sudden increases on groceries don't matter ..... people just call it inflation and complain once again, even though it's evident it's not increasing costs but increasing profits of certain suppliers.   Lol .... people complain about costs but not profits ... "isn't it ironic".

The Publix price increases don't impact anyone who chooses not to pay them. Publix caters to a clientele who don't mind paying more for better quality and better stores. They're gouging no one. There are more affordable options available to shoppers, who are still paying higher prices at those outlets because of inflation.

Do you really want a political class to determine price points based on social criteria? I get it, you're trying to be equitable, but it's a direct path to ceding control to bureaucrats.
