Minshew will be fun to watch with the Raiders this year. He reminds me a bit of Chad Pennington. Just a lot more scrappy and mobile.

All these arguments have their point, but we should have still kept Minshew on the cheap when we had the chance. Trading him was ridiculous. However, for Minshew the trade clearly worked in his favor, so it’s all water under the bridge. I still really enjoy his energy as a presence in the league.

Nah, it made sense to do. There was still a contingent of people that wanted him to start over Trevor and the noise would have only gotten louder once Trevor had string of bad games in year 1 and the first half of year 2.

No, you get rid of a back up QB who can't run the playbook similar to how the starter runs it. It's why Lamar always has a mobile/running QB on the bench behind him and a pocket passer wouldn't work. You can't change the whole scheme if the starter goes down, you have to have a guy who can run the same concepts, even it's not as well.

That isn't saying much... Darnold isn't any good either, just like Mac. Neither are good.

Darnold’s ability to survive as a starter amazes me.

Interesting scenario with CJ getting banged up last night and Mac going back in. I thought Mac played a hell of a game. He had a few misses but threw some dimes out there.

Did they completely pull CJ because they want his as the backup and to be healthy? Or did he get hurt enough they had to pull him and now they can easily throw him on IR or waive injured and roll with Mac.

Guess it depends on his health, but based on these 2 games, Mac is definitely the better player. If CJ plays all of the 3rd game I’d say we know for sure Mac is the #2

I was distracted (read: at the bar), so I just thought CJB was putting up such a stinker that they put Mac back in.

I think it's safe to say after Saturday the OP is moot. All things are not even at this stage. CJB looks uneasy out there, like a kicker with the yips.

Mac had a few bad tosses (the called back pick, a hospital throw to Duvernay over the middle, missed or threw high on a few occasions), but safe to say that he's taking the job and making the choice easier on the coach and GM. I will be very interested to see how things go at the end of the season. I doubt we have the resources available to keep him around without a major hometown discount.

I do not think for a minute that we keep 3 on the roster, and after this preseason I think CJB would be safe on the PS. It's been rough.

He is pretty good at seeing and taking advantage of mistakes in coverage, but he doesn't have the arm strength to make the throws that can beat decent coverage.

I think he will end up being better known as a coach.

I love Minshew and always will, but he's nothing more than a back up QB who can play starter duty in a couple of games. He's very limited and everybody knows it.

Hope he excels with his chance as the starter in LV, but I bet they're playing QB carousel through out the year this season.

Minshew will absolutely be an awesome coach though and I have no doubts he'll excel in that role. He definitely has a coaching career ahead of him if he eventually wants to pursue that path.

I don't think any team will offer a 4th or better pick for our version of AJ McCarron but if the offer were to become available you definitely jump on it and accept immediately.

Teams do weird stuff when they don't have a viable starting QB and think your backup may save a few heads from rolling in the offseason. 

Guessing from which round the pick may derive is secondary to the premise of another team giving up draft capital to acquire a QB such as Jones to this discussion, but relevant.

Wasn't trying to debate how much capital a team may offer, but it is certainly relevant to the question posed. 
Is a fifth rounder enough? I'd probably just keep the backup in Duval at that point.

It's a 17 game season, so I would definitely keep him around unless I got at least a 2nd round pick for him, which I don't think we will get.  

I think he can be a starting quality QB.  Not elite, but solid.  Better than Gardner Minshew.
