I would be with you on this, but for the questions about our offensive line.  Last year I have to believe TL played when he shouldn't.  This due to the fear our backup did not give us a chance to win.  This year with Mac as backup this would be different. That is the rub.  Trade him then need him and wish you had not or trade him and not need him. Interesting odds, need a very strong crystal ball. We do have two 3's and 4th's next year already. It will be interesting, especially if they can get someone they half a bit of confidence in. They just signed E.J. Perry ?

Perry is the guy who will get beat up behind the bottom roster guys after Lawrence sits down. Then he'll likely be on the PS all year to run the scout team.

that is what I thought. My gut feeling is after last year they never had the intention of playing this season with CJ as the backup.

Shades of what we went though with Minshew....now a starter finally
It's all about the O line isn't it?
Mac will move on likely...CJ is proven at the clipboard

Beathard’s retention has something to do with his off field work with Lawrence. From what I’ve read and heard, he played a big part in teaching Lawrence how to analyze game film and prepare for game day. Lawrence is a veteran now. Beathard’s value these days is gauged more on what he offers on the field.

At least that’s how I see it.

If he was to be traded for an interior offensive line, that might be tempting. Other than that, he’s good insurance.

It would have to be a top notch backup or a starter, with more than this season left on his contract, for me to make the trade.

Some people on the game day thread raving about how good Mac Jones is. He did okay but all I see in him is as a backup. He flashes some decent throws but his overall form is not starter material. He may even get another shot at a start somewhere. It won’t last.

He's good enough to be a top 20 QB, that means someone will give him a shot at the job.

I hope so. It’s all about opportunity. A custom fitted clipboard would be a wise addition to his personal gear, though.

Just to be clear, when I call him a good quarterback, I mean he can start for a few teams and among all starters could be in the 20-25 range.  I don't mean elite.

But I saw him make some really accurate throws last night and lead a productive 2-minute drill, making smart throws and managing the clock well, playing with backups against backups.  He looks like what I call a good quarterback.

I never liked Jones as a QB, but the more I see him the more I like him.  Will he be a star QB?  Probably not.  Can he still start in this league?  Absolutely.  The other thing I like about him is his ‘energy’.  He really seems to enjoy himself out there.

The future is bright indeed fellas.
Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

In my opinion Mac Jones has earned the spot as the backup and should be retained.  There is no reason to gamble that CJ or some other team's practice guy would be able to perform as well as the backup should Trever get injured.  Mac is "cheap" right now in terms of salary since he is still on a rookie contract.  When he hits free agency he would only get more money should a team decide to pick him up to be a starter.

He’s always had talent. And he’s finally getting good coaching.

We are certainly spoiled by TLaw, but the thing that strikes me is the variable consistency. Granted some throws may be rushed, you're playing with a heap of guys who won't be here in two days, etc, but every now and again a throw gets away from him, and it varies from low throw to high. He threw a risky sideline pass early that was not a wise choice, but all of these things are kinda what one would expect from the not-start guy.

The variance is confounding. Usually guys tend in one direction or the other.

I'm sure that we all knew that Mac Jones would be our back up QB especially considering his 2024 pre season performances. Regardless of his injury, CJ was outplayed and I'm also sure that Dougie P wanted an upgrade at the position. Hopefully TL16 will remain healthy for the duration of this season but if not, I'm confident in Mac Jones to step in and play well.

Time Will Tell.
