Yeah, those pictures of that beautiful roof don't ahow the ugly power walls that will be bolted to your garage wall either.

Spend half that cost on a whole home generator.

When we got our panels, the math said the ROI would be 12 years. 
Then the DeSantis lackies on the public service commission let Duke energy increase our connection charge from $12 to $30 per month. That stretched our ROI out to 15 years. 
Both are way too long if you're thinking about flipping the property anytime soon.
But if you're going to be staying in the property long term, anything under 20 seems good to me.

A whole home generator doesn't have an ROI either.

ROI for solar and WHG are measured differently. WHG is quality of life,  which is hard to put an ROI on. Solar is $ saved you would have otherwise paid JEA. There are other factors as well, because propane and natural gas are substantially cheaper than utility produced energy. 

Not to mention, 20 year old panels will require some sort of maintenance and replacement,  not to mention they are a giant eye sore.

I hate to come to his defense, but there is a dock workers strike about to take place here domestically.  It's possible all he heard was the word strike and responded believing the question was about that issue.  His brain is still cooked though.
