Players to build around

This season has become our fans' worst nightmare. Three of the 4 losses were winnable which is almost more deflating than the loss to the Bills. Trevor Lawrence appears to have lost any confidence in his ability to carry this team. That being said, unless the Jaguars win their next 3 games (very possible due to poor opponents), it would be difficult to imagine ending the season with a record of better than 6-11. The talent level of this team has been debated. With that in mind, which players on the current roster should either be considered as definite building blocks or have the potential to be that if they show enough potential for the rest of this season? This is my list:
Definite building blocks: Offense: Trevor Lawrence: The team is locked into his contract and he can still become a top 10 q.b. with a better supporting cast and if he regains his confidence. BTJ: One of the few bright spots this season. Anton Harrison: He must do better, but could become a good left tackle. Ezra Cleveland: Has been disappointing, but has a 3 year deal and can be at least average when healthy. Mitch Morse: Hopefully the team will get at least 2 more good years out of him. Brenton Strange: Not great, but worth keeping as a 2nd tight end. Evan Engram: Like Morse, hopefully the team can get 2 more good years out of him. Tank Bigsby: Looks the part as future number 1 back. Possible building blocks: Parker Washington: Kirk may need to be let go due to underperforming for his salary. Cooper Hodges: Give him playing time to determine his future with this team. Undecided: Etienne and Kirk due to not out-performing their less expensive options ( Bigsby and Washington ). Defense: In the interest of brevity, the only players who are definites are Hines-Allen, Trevon Walker, Maason Smith, Campbell and likely Jefferson. Cisco has been a big disappointment and hasn't earned a new deal. Foye will be a tough decision due to his big contract and the possible emergence of Ventrell Miller. Lloyd and Muma will be on next year's roster, but have been disappointing as has Antonio Johnson. Armstead has also been a disappointment. By my math, that makes 11 position players who should make up the nucleus with the possibility of another 5 or 6 depending on how they perform for the remainder of 2024. Is that enough for our desperate fans to have some optimism for the future? Obviously, that will be primarily dependent on Trevor Lawrence. Secondarily, a new G.M. is needed to help fill the voids on the offensive line, pass rush and secondary. As far as the coaching staff, their futures are uncertain at this point. If Pederson doesn't turn things around, he and several assistants will need to be fired. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this. My apologies to Buster Brown who deserved to be on this list. Also neglected was Darnell Savage. De'Antry Prince and Lacy are also possibilities on defense as is Walker Little if he produces as a starter the 2nd half of the season. Unfortunately, I became distracted due to events in the Middle East and needed to edit my list. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
All of them except for Cam Robinson, Brandon Scherff and Gabe Davis. We need a new center to replace the old warhorse, but he's fine until he falls off the cliff. I just don't wanna have to go back to Fortner when he does.

I don't think the talent is too terribly far off on this football team. I just think it's an oddity that they cannot seem to get out of it's own way and a lot of it boils down to a lot of musical chairs happening at the wrong time. I think offensively, you have the right of it. Robinson, Scherff and probably Davis can go. I think Kirk is a cap casualty or trading candidate though. Defensively, I think you have the right pieces on the EDGE's, I think you have some consistent players in the LB room, with younger guys showing promise. I also think the secondary is well off enough. I think it's easier to say what's missing Vs. trying to go player by player and position by position though. It's clear, they're missing a quality LT and a consistent RG. They're missing WR's still. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if the next General Manager, or, Baalke, decide to take a WR early in 2025's draft if the value is correct. On defense, it's clear they still have zero presence in the interior. Not consistent at least to benefit and beef up the defense to take it to another level. Still work to be done there. Maybe Maason Smith is the guy, maybe he's not. Maybe Jordan Jefferson is a hit and we don't know it yet. Maybe that's a 2025 wait and see situation. I think we could use another pair of safeties though. I think Cisco is just a guy. I think Johnson is now showing why he may have slipped to where he did in the draft after some sites and armchair analysts had him going at one point to us in RD1 in the 20's before our team collapsed. So, not a ton of massive holes in my opinion. Very fixable and manageable moving forward. They just need a win really. Get one win. And then let's revisit this topic. I think they're fixing to get on a win streak starting this Sunday. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. I think that having Campbell, Brown, Jones, and Prince as the top 4 corners next year will help the safety play immensely. Right now we've got Darby, who's doing an admirable job BTW, as the #1 cover guy and he's just not big enough to do the job. He's more of a second guy or slot that the man who has to trail 6'3" #1 guys all over the field. Adding another guy in the draft should be a priority, but there's a solid core of players there who are on the very young side.
I also think the middle of the D-line is a maturation year away from being really good. Smith and Jefferson need this year to grow up and, if Lacy can play, we have a solid 4 inside along with Hamilton. Again, another pick there, or a big veteran free agent like Armstead was supposed to be would help, but I see talented youth there. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
You build around superstars, and we have none. There is a reason we are the most losing franchise in over a decade. Can’t build around average, and you need to hit with the #1 picks. We about to have the #1 pick 3rd time in 5 years.

Last one we had was Jalen Ramsey, defensively built, and Myles Jack is still not down. We had like 4 all pros on that D? That 2017 team damn sure should of been in the superbowl. It's a players league, you don't build around average.
Are you listing players to build around or players that will be on the roster next year?
There is a disconnect in the play caller and the offense. It appears the players don’t like Press, but Doug wants to be a head coach and not a coordinator.
The players to build around are there but a CB is needed. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! That defense was so good I forgot who the defensive coordinator was. Babish or Babich maybe? Carried by talent that exceeded his X's and O's. It was a good defense though. You had Ngakoue, Campbell and Jackson along the line. Smith and Jack on the outside with Paul in the middle manning it all. Ramsey and Bouye were tough to get past on the outside and our safety play was solid. Think it was Gipson and one other guy I can't remember. We need a better front office for sure with a better general manager. Starts there. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? Nonsense, there's a disconnect between some of the players and their hands. But let's stay on topic here, there's a hundred other threads where you guys can bash Press Taylor, this one is about actual players. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato

I don't know. Offense was humming along fine in week 1 and last Sunday. Guys really didn't execute in my opinion. We wanted more downfield offense. We have seen that with BTJ. Not the callers fault when his guys are overthrowing TD passes, dropping 3rd down conversions or fumbling it inside the redzone. It's a 50/50 thing for me. Well, in reality, going 60/40. In favor of the coaching staff actually. I think the players have really let the coaches down so far and they make a lot more money than some of these coaches do. Starts with #16 and it ends with #16 for me. I see guys within his same pay grade or just a notch below him doing more with less around them. Including guys that have been in the same exact funk or narrative about specific elements to their game at one point or another. The disconnect is him. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. I'm not passing up a corner though in any round because we have Jones and Prince. The good thing about this draft is there are 2 shutdown corners if there isn't an elite tackle at the top.

If we had a do over, I still think we had great picks in Round 1 of 2020 with CJ Henderson (#9) and Chaisson (#20) instead of opting for CeeDee Lamb (#17) and Justin Jefferson (#22).
