Credit where it’s due
|
I’ve been critical of the offensive coaching staff and so have many others.
But for the past two weeks now things have been much much better. Are there still some goofy plays? Sure but that’s everyone. Last week we would have scored 30+ as well if Trevor was just a bit more accurate on the deep shots. The OL has been good the past two weeks and Trevor didn’t look like he was feeling phantom pressure out there. No bailing out from non existent threats because his clock is sped up. They protected Trevor well and opened up holes for the run game. So credit where it’s due. The offensive staff has been good the past couple weeks. Hopefully they finally figured this thing out. Can we climb back from 1-4 is another question, but at least we look functional of offense again.

It's no coincidence that the best the offense has looked has also been the best the OL has looked.

I feel like last week even though the OL played well, Trevor was still a bit sped up. He looked much more confident in the pocket yesterday. If they continue to keep him clean for the most part I expect him to look more like yesterday. If they start slipping for a few games in a row I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trevor start bailing early again

As Lawrence builds his confidence back up in the protection around him he'll begin seeing the field some more and making more plays. The best thing he did yesterday was hang in the pocket and take what the defense gave him. He only got greedy once and it was a low risk anyway.
Would like to keep seeing them get the call in, break out of the huddle and up to the LOS so he can read, move guys in motion, etc. This is two weeks in a row now though where the offense has began showing it's identity properly. They're a run first offense wanting to aggressively attack you downfield in chunk plays. I think they'll be tested tremendously over the next two weeks in London though. DO. NOT. SLEEP. ON. THE. BEARS. AND. THE. PATRIOTS. We're in no position as a fanbase or team to say that these games are winnable, potentially easy games and that we have the advantage completely from being familiar with London. They have to stay aggressive. They have to regroup. They have to find themselves on defense more than anything. Offensively this team has a gold mine potentially in Engram and Strange now if his hamstring is better. They said he was close to being activated yesterday. He should be good next week I believe. At some point, they need to use the both of them in a set along with Bigsby and Etienne in the same set. A Twin TE package with a split backfield at RB? They could have some fun with this in my opinion. That leaves you one lone WR, probably BTJ out there. You can flex a Etienne out wide or Engram out wide to create mismatches. Hopefully they start looking at these types of things. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. Funny what a win does to even the fans. Overall we are at the point of the season where play is improving. It was good for the team to work through some adversity and overcome. The team played well overall but that was a crazy 4th quarter.

You laugh but it's up to the coach to make sure the DL is unsure what the OL is going to do. You have to throw draw plays and screens and trap plays in judiciously, and you can't tip them off pre-snap with head bobs or hand signals or anything like that.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

I'm sure that's what made the difference yesterday. Press called the non-head-bob plays. No, it was some combination of the players eliminating some of their tells, and Trevor's improved accuracy allowed them to be in positive down and distance, allowing the play caller to choose from a wider range of plays. It was the players doing what the coaches told them to do with higher fidelity.

The way the offense started out in the 1st Quarter set up the explosive plays that happened the rest of the game. We came out aggressive in the play calling by not forcing run plays. We threw the ball several times in a row. We gave Trevor easy reads to ETN to get him into a rhythm and gain his trust in the line and his arm. That caused the clot D to be on their heels instead of being able to key on our predictability that was a problem for the last 9 games. We looked like a real NFL offense. A lot of credit is due to the players executing. But you have to give credit to the HC/OC that finally had a good game plan and an overall good day of calling the right plays at the right time. I still don't think Press is competent enough to run this offense on his own. Thankfully, it's clear that Doug is getting more involved in how this offense plans for each game. The last 2 games harken back to how unpredictable we looked two years ago. It's one win. And I'm happy for it. But this has to continue to get better. We've got a long road ahead. But, believe it or not, we're only 1 game out of the last wildcard spot. We can still make the playoffs, believe it or not.

One game at a time. All of my family back home are Bears fans so the will be an interesting game week. Let’s do this man, I need some bragging rights.
