NEW: Helicopter destroys Hurricane Helene recovery supplies in Burnsville, North Carolina at a distribution site.

Locals say two black SUVs did a "slow roll" 45 minutes before the helicopter showed up.

"This evening at approximately 7:18 in Burnsville, NC an unmarked helicopter flew in and attempted to destroy the distribution area that was set up by locals for locals while I was conducting a K9 Security Round," megsbacn, a veteran volunteer said on TT.

"THIS WAS NOT ONE OF OUR HELOS! This was about 45 minutes after 2 unmarked black SUVS and a side-by-side did a slow roll at the entrance of our parking lot and left."

"[The helicopter] was UNMARKED and it is illegal to fly unmarked helicopters. But we know SF can and does and we know some private contractors do (not sure of the legalities on that though)..."

"So who were they? Why were they here? Why were they masked up? I've done plenty of helo ops with Coast Guard helos and I know a practiced rotor wash when I see it and our pilots never masked up this way."

Of all the things that didn't happen, that is certainly one.

Regardless, it is a little curious that an unmarked helicopter did a rotor wash pass on a depot which was obviously collecting relief supplies. Who does that?

It must be true because a guy named Collin Rugg said so.

Did I do that right?

No, you didn't. It's so terribly easy not to get it wrong but you still managed.

This happened yesterday. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. Buncombe Co which includes Asheville still doesn't have mail service and my friend in Mitchell Co said they don't have mail service yet either.

NC elections board pass bipartisan resolution to support voting access in WNC

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- During a meeting Monday, the State Board of Elections voted unanimously on a resolution that provides local county offices more power to ensure voting access.

The resolution, which applies to Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, and Yancey counties, involves a series of provisions that range from modifying early voting sites and schedules to allowing for additional locations for voters to drop off their absentee ballots.

"Additionally, we know there's going to be challenges regarding maintaining the poll workers at these voting sites, both early voting and election day. So what this resolution allows is county boards, by a bipartisan majority vote, to appoint election officials who are registered in other counties, to appoint emergency election day assistance, to re-assign poll workers to different locations," said Board of Elections General Counsel Paul Cox.

Typically, the final stretch leading to Election Day is full of mass campaigning, though the storm has affected that strategy. Traditional campaign events have been replaced with a focus on volunteering and giving back, with messaging focused on ways to connect with those affected by the storm.

"I would encourage all current elected officials and candidates to think about solutions that are going to help people here in western North Carolina that have been devastated by this hurricane, find ways to rebuild and to streamline any bureaucratic red tape processes," said Woodhouse.

"We're hoping to be a conduit of information and help more than our regular routine of just knocking on doors and giving information about the candidates," added Jones.

Challenges still persist logistically, as power and internet remain out in parts, and traveling remains severely impacted.

"The people that are far enough out where their roads are washed out and everything, we're still having a hard time even getting in contact with (them). But the people I have talked to, they're worried about the the early voting sites and if they're going to be there and if they're not going to be there, what's going to happen and where do we send those people? And people are also very worried about absentee ballots, that some have mailed in ballots. Some have requested ballots to be mailed to them. Currently in Buncombe County, there is no mail service. So I was very heartened to hear from a lot of the board of election folks, (on) Monday morning, after just a complete catastrophe, and many of them were in their offices figuring out what this is going to look like going forward," said Jones.

"We're starting to see quickly temporary things coming into place to allow people to get out. We're going to do everything that we can to help make sure that people that are isolated or secluded or unable to get out, that we're going to help them if it's by absentee, if it's by riding an ATV down the mountain to get to the polls, we're going to do everything we can. If they want to get to the polls, we'll help get them there," said Woodhouse.

I find it hilarious that the 'fact checker' thinks knowing the make and model of a helicopter means it's not unmarked. Idiots.

It is a curious thing that this happened. The government in it's many levels don't want organizations it can't control or manhandle to be in control of any relief efforts. It's already been an issue where a local sheriff in one area put a halt to volunteers distributing supplies from a municipal airport where pilots were delivering goods. He couldn't stop the people so he asserted jurisdiction over the airport and told the airport manager that anything delivered there had to be turned over to the sheriff's department for distribution.

I personally think it was someone with a private aircraft who had no idea what the hell they were doing.

I want to agree but any helicopter pilot, especially one qualified to fly a more complex aircraft like the one shown in the video, is well aware of rotor wash. Understanding the effects of rotor wash on ground objects and also how it affects low-level flight is an essential part of pilot training.

My guess is it was an act of contempt because they wouldn’t allow it to land.

Let’s be honest, they only did it so they could scope out homestead sites for when they retire.  Laughing

Ok, so Dems get NC.

As for the helicopter, if it was intentional, it was most likely corporate. You guys keep sleeping on the corporations, man.

Nah, I just lump them and the government together. They're pretty much butt buddies. I mentioned the government specifically because they, local government at least, has overextended their power in some locations and it's been documented.

Turns out it was a NC National Guard helicopter that didn't realize the area was not a drop zone. When they realized they were in the wrong place and doing damage they left.  Command has grounded the chopper and the crew pending investigation.

That's the 'official' story according to local news.

So many people from up there retire here in NC. It's why we're turning into a purple state.

A NG pilot, eh? He'll never live this down. He and the crew might get a slap on the wrist, but it was an honest mistake if true. Plus, NG pilots aren't that easy to replace.

Day 14 and my friend in Little Switzerland (just up the mountain from Spruce Pine) is still without power, water, landline and has spotty cell service. Someone donated generators to her church and she was given one yesterday. She's hoping to hook it up to her well long enough to clean her house, then use it for other purposes.

Her mom Linda had been staying with her over the summer and was making final plans to go back home to FL for the winter when Milton showed up so she decided to stay in NC. Her house is in Siesta Key which is just south of Tampa Bay if I understood her correctly. So regardless of where she is she is without utilities but I guarantee you Siesta Key will get them restored before Little Switzerland. Poor lady.

Folks everywhere are going through tough times but especially in FL, WNC and E Tennessee. Let's remember to be kind to one another. Just because we're not in the thick of it in these areas doesn't mean people we know and love aren't.
