Can we talk about the D?

yeah we need Gipson and Campbell badly, just to hope to be respectable. That said, do not rush Campbell back if there is a high change of reinjuring his hamstring.

It looks like he's playing maybe 30%-40% of his snaps at DT - the rest outside to my unofficial eyeball test.
Is anyone else seeing that?

I don't notice him inside very often at all - but the numbers on the snap counts suggest he's there more often than I see him.

Hope he starts to make more impact. I assume he's on a pitch count, but... we're gonna need his help.

At safety:

I feel like something's gotta give ASAP

Johnson just a'int it. Not ready or not cut out for this scheme. Missing open field tackles badly and getting beat up by TEs.

Cisco looks like a regressed guy that ALSO can't adapt to the new scheme.

They have some options on the roster.  Nielsen should act now, but something tells me they drag their feet on this.

I think it's appropriate to say I don't notice him, period. That's a problem if it persists.

I agree that he's probably on a pitch count and not full blast every down for the sake of recovery, but the interior remains anonymous on gamedays with or without him in there.

Agree with 90% of what you said.

One thing I would consider is this:  The DTs are eating blocks to allow the rest of the D (Walker, Hines-Allen, Lloyd, Muma, etc) to get to the RB.  Our run defense isn't the issue, really.  It's the pass defense.  And that is a combination of no push in the middle, and our secondary not executing better.  Walker and Allen need to contain the scramble, Caleb is not a sitting duck.  If Walker and Hines-Allen go ham like they did against Flacco, Caleb is going to get to the edge and run for 10-15 yards.  We can't just rush from the edges and not get home, otherwise, it's gonna be a long day.

Neilsen has started doing more zone coverage that our safeties are more comfortable with.  I think we're about to get into a groove here.  I think the DC is figuring out what works and what doesn't, and we'll start really using our players the best way within the game plan/scheme Neilsen wants to run.  Especially against a mobile QB, it'll be smart to contain him in the pocket, and then get home on the edges.  But Walker and Hines-Allen have to be smart to not let him get outside of their rush.  If that happens, the bears will torch us.

Hopefully this is the week where the D can expose a rookie QB.

I see you Buster Brown. Once we get Campbell back, we got options. Jones is getting invaluable reps that is going to pay dividends down the road.

Don’t make a move at safety before the trade deadline, because Wingard bout to put that on lock.

It should be Campbell and Buster at corner with Jones at nickel, and Cisco and Wingard at safety. Johnson is a heck of a player but he’s raw.

As of now, Johnson and Cisco need to switch assignments. The missed tackles and blown assignments are just unacceptable.

Let us not forget that we have a New DC and Most of the secondary/LBs are new starters and or injured. I Truly feel that during our next few games, our D will flourish and will be really good by the by-week.

Time Will Tell.

I liked the optimism, but unfortunately the ship sank today.

They don't have the pass rush needed to play man. Having the secondary hobbled with injuries doesn't help any, but no secondary cant cover as long as the burrs had today.

I was literally about to write the exact same response.  But I just don't have the the motivation right now.  I just don't even know anymore.  This is, the lowest I've felt as a Jaguar fan.  I can't think of another season as miserable as this one is turning into.

All the hope and potential to come out 1-5 and just look completely inept.

But yeah, our secondary has very little depth. But if a QB gets all the time they want to set up and throw, playing man coverage is gonna get torched.

Whether it’s an aging veteran like Flacco or a rookie like Williams or a trash can like Watson, this defense will give up chunk yards all game long. Don’t know if it’s personnel or scheme or both, but yeah worst I’ve ever seen as a fan.

This defense continues to show up not prepared. Even in the games that were close. The mental lapses in coverage have continued to show up over and over and over again. Williams was one underthrown pass today in that 1st half from having 5 [BLEEP] touchdown passes in a game. Probably a rookie single game record if he hits that one. That's all you need to know as far as how bad this defense has been historically under Nielsen.

And you can 1,000% thank Pederson for this because it was his decision to [BLEEP] over Mike Caldwell and hang him out to try and he's now getting his MASSIVE comeuppance. Doug's a [BLEEP] fraud man. He doesn't know defense. Jim Schwartz bailed his [BLEEP] out in Philadelphia and it's making a TON of sense here now. Time to bite the bullet and move on.

You can't blame the defensive woes on injuries. EVERY team is playing with injuries. The Bears were missing several starters. The Colts were a total mash unit and the Jags barely beat them last week. Ronaldy Darby is healthy and he's being targeted consistently. Today against a rookie QB, the Jags only blitzed 6 times. Armstead is totally out of position as a DE, yet that's where he's playing half the time. And not to read too much into PFF, but this is one of the lowest-rated defenses ever - historically bad.

K'Lavon Chaisson had more sacks today than Allen and Walker combined
