FIRE NIELSEN

Will Nielsen even be able to find a job after this? I guess he can coach at an FIU or something.

He'll probably be a DL coach in the NFL or NCAA pretty easily.

Yeah, he'll be hired again.  But it won't be at the DC level of an NFL team.

The way he played our guys...

There was a drive the Lions went on when JHA wasn't even on the field for 4 straight plays!!!  I mean, unless JHA was under concussion protocol, I have no idea why JHA isn't on the field 90% of the time.

We really need to know why they are subbing. He hasn't subbed anywhere else, so someone had to get him to do this or he feels with only 2 DEs and basically no DTs, he has to do it. So is someone on the analytics side forcing this or is he doing it to prove a point that the GM sucks?

I've said it a number of times. I don't know if it's Nielsen, the system, the players or all of it but that's as bad as you'll see from an NFL team. It's not all on the D and I get they've probably quit like everyone else but that's damn embarrassing numbers.

From a Lions fan perspective, I was surprised that the Jaguars didn't blitz much more in this game, based on what was transpiring in the game.

A related thought is from the several Jaguars games I watched this season, one player the Jaguars greatly miss is DE/ Edge Arden Key. I thought that was the case last season but even more this season. IMHO, he was a huge reason why the Jaguars went on a late season surge in the 2022 season.

Probably a directive from Baalke to stop players from reaching their invididual contract incentives. Saves $. After all, they've got a $22 million shortfall to make up.

I think the lack of blitz is because not only do we not have guys that can get home, the secondary is lacking and likely to get burned without the extra help (like it really mattered, though)

We can't rush the passer or tackle the runner so we make up for it by not covering the receivers. It's a lose, lose, lose proposition.

Too many expectations there.  Perhaps FSU.

I don't think it would have mattered regarding the outcome of the game.  Especially, with Trevor Lawrence out and Christian Kirk on IR.  It would have been extremely difficult for the Jags to mount a comeback.  Yet, even factoring this in, much more blitzing would have had two benefits for the Jaguars:

1.  Even one or two stops would have given the Defense collectively something positive to take from the game.

2.  The Jaguars Defense would have spent less time on the field. When combining this game, with other recent Jags games, the team's Defense has spent an inordinate amount of time on the field.  That by itself might have led to a Defensive stop or two.

Regarding matchup issues on Defense, I believe the strategy that Vikings DC Brian Flores heavily uses, that was on display in the Vikings-Jaguars game, should especially be used by teams that have problems in generating a pass rush and/ or in coverage: An array of zone blitzes, with many different looks, and disguises.  While Jared Goff handles the Brian Flores blitz looks and disguises as well or better than any other QB, getting even one or two Defensive stops would have been a better results for the Jaguars than what took place.

I completely agree D6 but blitzing just isn't something we do this year. Its a lot of 4 man rush then everyone else in coverage. The D has been a disaster zone this year and they have their share of the mess we're in but they just don't seem to have anything they are good at to even build from.

As flsprtsgod says, we can't get pressure, can't cover even with the extra guys so it's a pick your poison D. Well get beaten whatever we do but when your getting steamrolled drive after drive just try something. No ones going to complain if that goes for a TD.

It's not even a Neilsen thing.  This team blitzes and the blitz is protected...

It's crazy, but it's true.  We haven't gotten to the QB on blitzes for years now...  I just don't get it...  Every other team knows how to get to the QB, except us.
