Still paying the price for the 2020 draft?

#1

I have never seen these guys before but they are making a whole lot of sense. The staple of a team is built through the draft.  Obvious the Jaguars have failed to get the talent.  They were saying this about the 2020 draft and just looked at it.  Wow it is so pathetic.  This is also a reflection from Khan who held onto Dave Caldwell and let him do it.

Jaguars 2020 draft:
Round Selection Player Position College Notes
1  ( 9 C. J. Henderson CB Florida
20  K'Lavon Chaisson OLB LSU from Los Angeles Rams
2  42 Laviska Shenault WR Colorado
3  73 DaVon Hamilton DT Ohio State
4   116 Ben Bartch OT Saint John's
137  Josiah Scott CB Michigan State from San Francisco via Denver
140  Shaquille Quarterman ILB Miami from Chicago
157  Daniel Thomas S Auburn from Baltimore via Atlanta
165  Collin Johnson WR Texas from Los Angeles Rams
189  Jake Luton QB Oregon State
206  Tyler Davis TE Georgia Tech from Seattle
7 223  Chris Claybrooks CB Memphis

Wow that is a Horrendous daft.  Hamilton was the best player from the group and he is no world beater.  Baalke was on the staff at the time.

The 2020 draft was a problem, but the team has had plenty of time to recover.

The problem is the team has drafted dreadfully for the whole last twenty years with a few years being exceptions like 2016.

Baalke has no one to blame for the current state of the team. However, the 2020 draft was illustrative of why it's better to let go of a bad GM sooner than later.

Khan should have gotten rid of Baalke years ago, the next best time to get rid of him is right now.

Yea, that is an issue. A bigger one is the teaching process (on-boarding) I watched the Lion- Packer game last night. The Lion defense had a TON of guys, maybe 8 or so out. The new guys came in and played well, no missed assignments, good communication and very little drop off. These were rookies, backups and street free agents.

Our coaches take the better part of a full season to get rookies up to speed. Every year first part of the season the team appears to act like the Keystone Cops for the first few games. Then at critical times we have sporadic "communication" problems with players out of position all year long. We hear every week about the good practices they had and progress they made during the week. Problem is it doesn't show up on the field. Now it would appear we are employing players with learning disabilities or a teaching process that is less than effective in my opinion.

The video that the OP posted is a fantastic listen if you have time.

They detail their thoughts on Baalke, the coaching, who they would release (Kirk and Engram), who they would hire and sign as well as a mock draft.

It’s an hour and a half but a very good listen.

We're still paying for Shad not firing Trent Baalke. We'll continue to pay this price into the future.

Khan didn't learn with Caldwell and he hasn't learned with Baalke, but did you see the strapped jugs in the pool at the home opener? Thanks Shad.

Yeah, those guys shouldn't run around with their shirts off like that.

Bro, I just want to say that you were right.

The ETN pick in the 1st round should have been the moment Baalke was fired.

I was too much of a homer to admit it.  But ETN was the dumbest pick we've made since...  Well since the other dumb picks we've made.  But you were right.  ETN was a terrible pick, and that alone should have gotten Baalke fired by someone that really knows how to draft players.

Thank you for that. I was listening to Hacker and some guest talk a few nights ago about how this is the year the RB is coming back since Henry and Barkley are doing so well, but I think that's premature. Those two RBs are unlikely to even be playing in the Super Bowl, much less winning it. Even teams like the loins who invested 1s in their backs and are doing well are still running a platoon most of the time. Maybe it will change as defenses get lighter and lighter for the passing game, but I don't think it's imminent.

I had dreams of Darren Sproles...  But there is only one type of scat back like that, and we wasn't even the primary back...  Eh, what ever.  You were totally right.  I was completely deluded.   It's just gonna be a hard several months for all of us.  I figure I'm going to get a medical card and just ease into it.

And you know, it might've been ok had the Fortner pick not flamed the way it did. Instead we ran the poor guy into the ground by running him into brick walls 20 times a game.

Darren Sproles as a first round pick would have been horrible.

He needed to be Marshal Faulk to justify that pick which was never going to happen.

Just remember that we were a couple picks and the NY giants away from it being that terrible Gaturd receiver.

I loved watching Darren Sproles play. He has a short-legged build. When he got them going, they were a blur.

Yea, it was a good listen. No doubt, the 2 commentators were very knowledgeable overall and particularly about the Jaguars. There were things I believe they missed on, however, such as their high praise for Cisco and Lloyd. No arguing about how terrible the 2020 draft was as well as the selection of Walker over Hutchinson in 2022.

They recommend trading back 1 spot and still landing Hunter and taking players for both interior lines on day 2. In free agency, they would target a cornerback such as Charvarious Ward and interior lineman like James Daniels or Teven Jenkins, despite his history of injuries. They don't see the Jaguars being in the market for Trey Smith. Somewhat surprising is their recommendation to let both Kirk and Engram go in free agency. While I could see one of them not being re-signed, losing both would be too harmful to Lawrence since Gabe Davis has shown nothing so far.

Most disturbing is that they wouldn't be surprised if Baalke is retained as G.M. While that is not their recommendation, one gets the impression that it wouldn't shock them if this happened. Their top 3 coaching candidates are Ben Johnson, Liam Coen and Klint Kubiak. It was interesting to see the opinions of 2 outsiders, whether one agrees with them or not.

I think any talk of Baalke staying is the fear that Shad doesn't see the problem. Baalke got to stay last time the HC was let go. I wouldn't be surprised if this is happening but I'm not going to bet on it.

The arguments about Kirk and Engram were mostly about money and in Engram's case a bit about scheme. Depending on who comes in at HC it could be that Engram isn't what they need at TE. I understand the argument about saving money but the thing is you still need to replace them with other high priced guys in FA. It was different if you had guys already on the roster. I don't think we have.
