You guys still think there's going to be a change, hmm? Interesting.

I have no faith that this team is able to fix the disfunction that is rooted in ownership. Until Khan gets serious (both of em) this team will continue the charade…

Ben Johnson has way better options than this cesspool. If we fire Doug, which is a huge if, after a huge win Sunday, we will get some failed retread willing to work with Balke.
This franchise has the worst owner in professional sports.

And we have an owner who is willing to spend a lot of money to upgrade the facilities, acquire free agents, and extend our own players. Plus we have a new stadium on the way. What we need is to get a new GM, and have him select the new HC, or get a new HC, and have him select the new GM. Either of those ways, there is one person in charge of the football team. That's the way I would do it. (12-11-2024, 01:02 PM)flsprtsgod Wrote: You guys still think there's going to be a change, hmm? There was a rumor to some media that the Browns owner, Haslem likes Vrabel who is working there as a consultant/advisor. Haslem would be more open to moving on by trading Stefanski to make up for draft capital lost in the Watson trade, and so he wouldn't have to pay both head coaching contracts. Plus trading Stefanski would engender less ill will around the NFL than firing him. Also Watson will be on the roster for 2 more years with an uncuttable dead cap hit, and Vrabel had a relationship with Watson in Houston. I would argue all the openings likely to be available will have their own flaws. Supposedly Ben Johnson has thrown out feelers that he prefers the Bears job. Also it sounds like Detroit has been leaking a bunch of stuff about Johnson's personality and uncommon locker room/practice eccentrics that may rub some GM's and owners the wrong way? Not sure how much of all this is smoke 'n mirrors. If they did, they wouldn't have HC openings. Khan has repeatedly gone to new coaches/staff and even players to ask the mistakes/improvements portion. It's why the new MEC exists. For Jax, it all comes down to if Baalke survives or not. If he does, I'm sure Khan will ask Johnson to help with FO/GM hires for alignment. Because he did the same thing when he hired both Urban Meyer and technically he asked Pedersen if he was okay with Baalke. There was even the press conferences after the Dougie hire of a better organizational alignment as a prominent change. Neither of those criteria rule out the Jags. What caused Doug to crater in the middle of last season? He had this team playing hard and winning, and in the blink of an eye the team faceplanted and are now fully into a yearlong (mostly) losing streak. There has to be a reason things turned south so suddenly. Has Khan ever spoken to him personally to find out why?
I would be all for Khan firing Baalke now to see how Doug responds. If it's positive, the problem has been found. If not, he'll be another position to fill in the offseason. I don't say this simply because I don't like Baalke and want him gone (I do). The HC is where the rubber meets the road. GMs don't make teams play well, HCs do. Is Trent casting a pall over Doug? Or is Doug just mentally checked out? That would be a simple method to find out if it's Trent, Doug, or both. I wonder if Khan is even trying to troubleshoot the problem. If not, he's a bad owner.
Looks like Bill Belichick pulling a Rodney Dangerfield and headed back to school, UNC, specifically. Do ya'll think we dodged a bullet or missed an opportunity?

I'll side with dodged a bullet. I just don't think a guy bordering on retirement is going to have the energy to completely change the culture. If you had looked at the Patriots fans message board there wasn't many fans regretting the loss of the GOAT. In my mind, I feel like you'd get one year of [BLEEP]-chewing that could turn it around for a year, but I don't see Belichick as a good architect in terms of talent acquisition and a sustainable winning approach.

I wanted no part of Belichick in Jacksonville. Vrabel, Liam Coen or Ben Johnson. We ride.

We'd be just another flash in the pan and back to the 1st overall pick. I don't know, it would be nice to have some wisdom to guide the franchise, because we clearly have no wise person running this front office in terms of NFL experience and how to build a franchise. I mean, let's assume we fire Baalke. Do you think any of the top coaches would look at this franchise as something to hang their hat on, or just a place to collect a final paycheck? I don't see Ben Johnson coming here, even if we fire Baalke. As many have said, there's a chance Baalke survives. At that point, who is willing to come here and try to perform a miracle? I'm honestly asking. There has to be some tier 2 OC that is young enough and willing to lay down the wood and turn a franchise around with a QB that is capable of helping him do that. There are certain 2nd tier OCs I've mentioned. The dude from Washington comes to mind. He's got HC experience and has done well with a rookie QB. Josh McDaniels seems like he may be ready. Heck what about that guy at Ole Miss? I forget his name, but he's young and he's hungry. We're a 2nd tier franchise. Shouldn't we be looking at 2nd tier coaches with an axe to grind? Most in that situation absolutely do not take focus off the Super Bowl to go interview. It’s just a fact man. |
