Maason "Healthy Scratch" Smith.

As RealMarty said, there is something really wrong with this team... Something very very wrong with this team

They guy wasn't ready when he got here and then he got dinged up. He's progressing fine and I'm hopeful for a big jump into year 2.

No doubt that he's doing great.  But we can't ignore the fact that he was also "healthy scratched" for several games...

All I'm pointing out is the fact we all agree on.  There is something wrong with this organization.  Something really, really wrong with this organization.

He wasn't any less ready than he is now lol.  He led the preseason in pass rush win rate for all rookies on the interior.  The healthy scratches had nothing to do with him not being ready.

It was the internal fight between the Baalke (the cancer) and Pederson (the slacker).

We are clearly a trash organization that has been fighting against ourselves.  That is the whole dog gone point of this thread.

Maason should have been playing months ago.  But the friction between GM and HC has delayed a 2nd round talent from getting actual NFL snaps.

Internal fight?  Lol.  They talked about it on 1010 being a behavioral issue and a few brought up on here he wasn't staying in shape was doing some things Doug didn't like.  Why would Doug not play Smith because of friction with him and Baalke?  Why single out Smith?  That makes zero sense.  Sit BTJ if you want to try to hide a real talent Baalke drafted.

He was doing some things behind closed doors Doug didnt like.  Why the hell would Doug single out Smith and sit him just becuase he has some beef with Baalke?  Thats some of the dumbest [BLEEP] ive heard and makes zero sense lol. That would leak out of the locker room and he would have lost the locker room all together if he was doing dumb [BLEEP] like that.

Pay not attention to the muckraker. He doesn't know a damn thing about why Smith was scratched.

And Cole Van Lanen was the highest rated OLman in the Preseason but it took a trade and 2 serious injuries to even get him on the field. I guess he was doing some undefined behavioral thing or something too, right? Lol.

In case some of you still haven't caught up to reality on this topic - it was reported weeks ago that the staff was sitting smith because they mandated a playing weight for him and he kept showing up to conditioning overweight

Look at the guy

It tracks

We should just be happy he doesn't suck at this point IMO

Van Lanen was a G and actually had his chance in a few games because of injuries the last few years and didnt look very good.  Ever since his move to T hes been our best backup and looks like a damn good swing T.

Yeah, they talked about it on 1010XL

Maason likes that Louisiana gumbo a little too much. We had the same issue with 4net too.

Kid has a lot of talent, hopefully he takes that jump.

His progression, along with hopefully Armstead playing more exclusively next year at DT is why I am not moving DT too high on our draftboard. They'll also have Jordan Jefferson playing more as a 4th RD investment.

In fact, this team should be prioritizing DE/EDGE over DT in my opinion. We have nothing beyond JHA and Walker there. It's been completely devoid of any other presence rotation wise.

So what you're saying is CVL played great in preseason but couldn't get on the field and it wasn't because of some nefarious rivalry between coach and GM or because the player created some undefined disciplinary problem "behind closed doors" then? Good, glad you've come to your senses about why Maason Smith was scratched earlier in the year then.  Rolleyes

Oh come one, dude.  It's clear that the team doesn't know how to utilize the talent it has.  Wingard has seen no playing time until recently, even though he was also healthy.

You said in another comment that you hope Armstead will be utilized better.

But pointing out that Smith was a healthy scratch is muckracking?

This coaching staff hasn't been good at using our players in the right position for 2 years now.  It's not crazy to think that we are waisting good players.  So Maason Smith was a health scratch for the first 3 months of the season because he was too fat?  All while our entire D was looking like they were lost?  They couldn't use our 2nd Rounder that was expected to start, just because he was too fat?  That's just silly.

I was listening to Boselli on 1010. His take was draft the kid from Michigan, pair him with Maason. That would give us a stout middle with 2 good ends. Tell Armstead he'll play about 20 snaps at the 3 technique a game, get us 6 sacks and call it a day. Then go get younger, bigger and stronger on the o line.
A new broom always sweeps clean.

I’m with this. Just give me a guy that can get me 7-9 sacks other than Walker and Hines-Allen. I don’t mind if it’s Edge or DT. Maason Smith is 3rd on the team in sacks right now.

We need secondary help just as bad is what sucks.
