I don't see why we can't finish with at least a .500 record next season. Besides the Loins and Bills, we lost most of our games with competitive scores. I lay a sizable portion of those losses on coaching. With low-energy Doug and his boy Press, along with smug Ryan Nielsen out of the picture, this team plays better and closes out games.

I agree.  I don't think we're far away from being a playoff team.  We have a good bit of talent, but a few glaring holes, and our defense was totally mismanaged last year.

The minimum bar should be wild card.  This division is soft.  The Duval Pride message board tells me that I am an idiot and Trevor Lawrence is a real franchise caliber QB.  There is a ton of Draft capital/Free Agency dollars invested in the roster. It appears to me that Doug and his staff was not getting the most of these guys.  The team yet again has another top 5 pick to add to the roster. If this team isn't in the wild card next year, I for one would be very disappointed.  The Team lost most of it's games by one score so it's right there.

I don't agree that Goff is much better than Darnold, but I do agree that it would basically be that or 3 essentially rookie options. 

Any of those is better than being chained to Baalke. Sure that's my opinion, but I think it would also be the opinion of the vast majority of the football world.

So you're basically saying that you're going to ignore their body of work and think whatever you want to think.  Got it.

Goff has had a career being coached by the most elite offensive minds in football. Darnold has had one season in a similar situation to what Goff has spent his whole career, and he did just about as well in that one season. 

You're skipping the main point, being tied to Baalke is far worse than whatever situation the Raiders will be able to cobble together at QB next year whether that's Darnold or otherwise.

I'm not sold on doing a retread with Flores, Spagnuolo, or Saleh. Patrick Graham has not been too impressive in the roles he's had in the league. Aaron Glenn would be my option if neither Ben or Liam come here.

Yeah it’s funny, you just knew going online that the overreactions to one game were going to be flying.  No one is a guarantee to be a good head coach, you could go hire an accomplished head coach like Pete Carroll or Mike McCarthy and there is no guarantee they would be successful either.  People are kind of just looking past Washington, but they won 12 games, obviously drafted a hell of a rookie, Quinn is a hell of a defensive mind, Kingsbury sucks as a head coach but has always been an excellent OC.  Losing this game doesn’t really have much of a bearing on wether these coordinators are good candidates, you have to look at the body of work.

Johnson was still able to get 31 points against a good defense with Goff having a bad night and turning it over a lot.  The Lions went 15-2 so saying they beat up on bad teams and lost to good ones makes zero sense.  Johnson is still a top candidate, one game against a really good/hot team doesn’t change that.  Of course Coen, Brady, etc are also good candidates.  We are blessed with good options this year, just gotta hope we pick the right one.

The problem with that, and what makes football so awesome, is every year is a completely clean slate. Last year people were praising Houston, Niners, Packers and this season it's Lions, Commanders and Rams. Every fan wants success and want a coaching staff to walk in and just make it happen.

Doug looked like the right choice and was making progress towards success and then hit a wall. Every HC is going to have up and down seasons. The path to success is teams like the Bills, Chiefs, Ravens. Build a FO and coaching staff that work together and have a style and system they want to implement and then add players that work and excel in that system. Those teams have had years of stability and progress towards that goal.

That for me is the biggest thing with the new coaching staff. We need to find someone that the whole building from top to bottom can align with and give 5 years to build the roster and franchise, regardless of how good/bad those 5 seasons are.

I think the Jaguars could easily have a winning record and even be a playoff team next year if they have a good off-season and get better coaching.  Last year, they lost 10 games by 7 points or less.  They lost 9 of those by 5 points or less.  They lost 5 of those games by 3 points or less.  It wouldn't take much to turn a lot of those games around.  It often came down to one mistake, one penalty, one bad break, one bad play call, one bad coaching decision, etc.

It's not to say that we don't need to upgrade the roster, we do, but I feel like our major holes are very fixable.  On offense, I think a new guard and a center would do wonders.  We have good running backs, but they kept running into a wall of defenders. Guard and center are non-premium positions that are relatively easy to find.  Improve our running game, and our passing game will suddenly look much better.  Getting Kirk and Engram back from injury would help as well.

On defense, we need a new SS, FS and CB.  SS and FS are non-premium positions that are easy to find.  As for CB, I think it's likely we take Will Johnson at #5 in the draft.  We need an edge to compliment JHA and Walker, but I think a decent one may be available at our 2nd round pick.  As for interior defensive line, maybe we use a draft pick, but our solution may already be on the roster.  Move Armstead from edge to the interior.  Maason Smith, a rookie, started looking good late in the year.  Jefferson, another rookie, might take a step forward in his second year and even Hamilton has looked better in prior seasons. 

I'm optimistic that this team can turn itself around quickly.

I would be optimistic too... if I knew all the variables that caused the Jags to fall off the rails starting at the middle of the 23/24 season.

Why did free agents that were ok at their previous places of employment (Davis, Armstead and Darby) end up totally BAD compared to their previous season?  Why did we have a DC, who alledgely turned around an Atlanta defense...who said he was going to attack, attack attack...never blitz.    Why was our secondary HORRIBLE at creating turnovers.  Horrible at giving up big plays on 3rd down...why did our best Edge rusher not even get double digit sacks?

I wan Liam Coen...but there are no guarantees.    I want a DC that can disguise blitzes.  I want an offensive line coach that will bring in and coach offensive linemen that will move people.  I want a receiving coach that will give our receiving corps tips on getting open on intermediate routes.   I want a CONSISTENT running attack.

Coen, Johnson or Glenn...I really don't care, and I really don't prefer one guy over the other.
I want a team that's physical.  I want a team that gives 100% effort at every position.  I want Trevor to raise his game. I want a defense that can get the opposing team off the field on long down and distance.
I want to win.  And I don't care which HC it is that does it.

The team fell off the rails because they can't 1. run the ball, 2. protect the QB, 3. get middle pressure from the defensive line, and 4. get off the field on 3rd down. Sadly, you're placing your hopes in the wrong place, because coaching ain't what's broken with this franchise and changing coaches again is just moving the deck chairs on the SS Baalke.

It's crazy to me that people can look at this roster and think it's a competitive team. We are in a weak division, so we could possibly make the playoffs next year with the right coaching. When he brings the house on an all-out blitz we can call that play the "house salad".  They could work in some team specific lingo for our defense and call the ball carrier "crouton" or "bacon bit" cause you know when anyone is eating a salad, those are the things you're really going after so it kinda reinforces that for the defender going after the ball carrier.  Go get that crouton, son! I think our forced turnover number would go through the roof.

As is almost always the case, you make a lot of sense. The challenge for the new coach will be to find a way to build a winning culture. Despite falling short of his goal to win the Super Bowl, Dan Campbell has managed to change the culture in Detroit and I expect them to receive the Lombardi Trophy in the not too distant future. Ben Johnson is my top choice for the Jaguars, despite never having been a head coach at any level. The qualities he is known to possess include intelligence, ability to collaborate, holding his players to a very high standard and the ability to be tough when this is necessary with a player. Of course, he is best known for his creative offensive mind which has been on display the past three seasons as the Lion's offensive coordinator. If he can do for Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville what he did for Goff in Detroit, the future for the Jaguars should be bright. Of course, that depends on whether they can find a better supporting cast for Trevor- especially on the offensive line- as Campbell has done in Detroit.

Your exactly right as usual. Those are the exact reasons I want Ben Johnson and I know his lack of HC experience is a negative for some, the fact he's been around a HC like Dan Campbell is a big positive as he's seen first hand the difference it can make. 

Johnson has a lot of success running the ball and that Oline is a big reason why. I'm not sure he walks in here and suddenly we have a top run blocking Oline but you hope a new scheme, new coaches and new ideas can take it forwards. These are the things i just want fans to be patient on. There are some things with the roster and scheme that look like a quick fix, there are others that will take time.

One of things I look at is the AFC right now. The Chiefs, Bills and Ravens are the best teams and a step ahead of the rest right now. That next group of teams like the Bengals, Chargers, Dolphins, Houston etc are teams that jump between good and bad very quickly. The big difference between them and the first 3 is consistency and having the ability to find ways to win. I think we are good enough to be in that 2nd group right now but we've got a lot to do to prove we are that team. 

I just don't want all the expectation to be on Ben Johnson walking in and fixing everything. The players need to be better. The recruitment needs to be better. It's on everyone in that building.

You make good points and I don't think this is a bad roster by any means. There are definitely areas we can get better and better coaching on both sides of the ball will make a big difference. 

My only worry, and I completely get it being a fan of this team for 25 years, is the fanbase is worn out and frustrated and just wants to find someone who can turn us into a winning team. I'm not talking SB's but playoff runs, double digit win seasons. If we get Johnson and he has a difficult first year, I just want fans to be patient and give him time. Like you say, we lost so many close games and we do have takent on the roster so it's not like we are starting from scratch, but this team has holes and there were worrying signs this season. 

This team is desperate for some confidence and belief and if we start well and win a few big games, I can see us going on a roll but if we still have this hangover that we can't shake, it may be a tough year of figuring out who fits what Johnson wants to do and who doesn't.
