As for the 80% number, that is a generalization. You can get many different number for casualties by country. While yes the Russians did kill many more Germans. They lost many many more men than any other country. About 14 million service personnel if you believe the Russian numbers. Stalin used rather brutal tactics. Civilian deaths were most likely just as high. That was a nasty war on the eastern front. War is a nasty proposition all around. 

I have seen scholars that estimate 2.3 million to 4.2 million German soldiers killed during WW2. I have seen 1 to 2 million German deaths on the eastern front. The numbers on that war are much study and not fixed. Additionally about 1.9 Japanese died.

Germany is part of Europe.  We certainly didn't save Germany in either world war.  We helped 2/3 of Germany recover after the second world war, but we did the opposite of saving them during that war.  History is strange.  Individual battle stories should make you feel inspired/brave/proud but looking at the overall arc, if the main thing you feel is pride, you probably didn't understand what you read.
