2014 World Cup Discussion Thread

Quote:Exactly, and there in lies the problem. There could be an outlier occasionally....a quick corner or receiver could easily go soccer instead of another route....one leads to two, and so on. It's not out of the realm of possibility. I disagree to some extent. Right now there are a lot of great athletes under 6'3 that focus on basketball with virtually no shot of ever becoming a pro. If soccer gets popular enough that some of those are two sport athletes, they could start choosing soccer at higher levels because of the better shot of making money at it. Also, it's unlikely that a player could excel at the highest levels of football and soccer. At the World Cup the players run 7-11 km during the 90 minutes. That requires a body built for endurance, not for short distance explosion which is the main requirement in football. In other words, we don't need the Lebron Jameses or Adrian Petersons of the world to choose soccer, we need the Tim Picketts of the world. For the non-FSU fans, we need guys who are great athletes and competitors who are the wrong body type to be elite in the top 2 sports in this country. Because really, there's not a lot of overlap in the type of athlete each sport demands. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:so mexico and brazil play each other again or no? and what happens now that they tied who gets eliminated?Nope, not in group play. Both have 4 points now to lead their group.

They get points based on the results. Win=3 points and Tie=1 point. So for group A: Brazil 4 points with 2 games played Mexico 4 points with 2 games played Cameroon 0 points with 1 game played Croatia 0 points with 1 game played Cameroon and Croatia play tomorrow and then there's Brazil vs. Cameroon and Croatia vs. Mexico. Top two point-getters get through.
Quote:so mexico and brazil play each other again or no? and what happens now that they tied who gets eliminated? No, they are currently in the group phase. It's a group of 4, so I will use the US as an example. US Germany Portugal Ghana A win is 3 points, a tie is 1, a loss is -3 The US currently has 3 points with its win against Ghana, and they will accumulate points playing the other two. The top two from each group advances. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Quote:I swear I will be re-watching the USA game just to count the FLOPS by the Ghana players. Unwatchable? One of the greatest wins in USA soccer history was unwatchable? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

I don't see where you are disagreeing. That's basically what I was saying. Most guys who grow up now a days see their chance at becoming pro in either basketball or football. If you can get some of those guys to migrate over, thats where they will excel. The problem is convincing them thats where they need to go. When I was young, I played soccer until I could play football/baseball. It was the beginning to an end for me. I would much rather take a shot on playing professional soccer....some of those guys make tons of money.
Quote:Unwatchable? One of the greatest wins in USA soccer history was unwatchable? I see what he is saying, but I didnt think there were too many flops in that game. There are certain teams in the World Cup that have perfected the flop. Until they do something similar to the NBA where they can penalize a player for flopping, it will continue to happen. Quote:No, they are currently in the group phase. It's a group of 4, so I will use the US as an example.A loss is not minus anything, it's just 0.

Quote:Unwatchable? One of the greatest wins in USA soccer history was unwatchable? Why is that so surprising? Regardless of who is playing or the significance of the game it can be unwatchable if guys are taking terrible dives non stop. The constant flopping and crying is a huge turnoff. The sad part about it is that it appears to be an accepted part of the game which is horrible. I've seen it in every single game.

Quote:whats after the group phase, is it one loss elimination? It is, 16 teams get to that point. If the USMNT gets in, they will be away from Germany and the road is much smoother.

Quote:lol -3 Lol at you laughing at someone on this board considering your reputation....haha
Quote:whats after the group phase, is it one loss elimination? Yes sir. The US was eliminated in the round of 16 last year by Ghana. Ghana then lost in the quarterfinals. Quote:Yes sir. So all the talk about us not getting out of the first phase was talking about this group where in now? If they win another game that's pretty much a lock to advance then, I'll have to try and watch the next game. if you can't beat them....... If they win another game that's pretty much a lock to advance then, I'll have to try and watch the next game. Us winning another game in this group could be tough. We have been helped with Portugal because one of the better players will be out with the red card from the previous game. Ronaldo (one of the better players in the world) has had some injuries and may not be in great game shape. The US can still move to the round of 16 with two ties.
Quote:didn't mean to offend. come on, people love me here I used to be ok with you until you laughed at me. Now when you are mocking FSU fans, I will defend them.
its too early to start thinking about scenarios. we just need to draw the next game, or win if we're lucky
