2014 World Cup Discussion Thread

Quote:Because of the goal differential factor,  Portugal is indeed in a desperate situation.  Logically,  they will be on the attack early and often against Ghana,  hoping to get as many goals as possible.   This has the potential to be a high scoring game.   My guess is it will be.

Did you see their coach's face after they tied it? He knows their chances are slim to none.

Quote:That one hurt, but if you have me four points after the first two games before the tournament I would have taken that.

Definitely. But the way it played out was painful.

Shows you how far the US has come that a draw against Portugal is a letdown.

Ugh...a game where US outplayed Portugal for more than an hour, and we ended up in a tie...

This "Tie" hurt me more than a Jags loss during the playoffs...

Portugal certainly has a mountain to climb and needs help along the way.   But that very late tying goal gives them a pulse,  which they wouldn't have had if not for that goal.    It's better to have a 1 to 5 % chance than no chance at all.    As someone who doesn't watch soccer except during the World Cup,   I'm really looking forward to seeing what transpires on Thursday.   For the U.S.,  my guess is they would have signed for their current position before the World Cup began.

It has been so long I honestly don't remember what that feels like.

Yup. I took it as, "We didn't deserve that" from his expression.

No doubt about that, it was painful. Klinsman pushes the right buttons. For the most part, he's done that since the day he's been hired. Really excited he's already extended past 2018 WC.

You'd be correct. In this group, at this point, if given the option before hand, we'd a taken it.

The tie was indeed heartbreaking. That being said, I gotta say I love the play of Jermaine Jones. He has easily become one of my all time favorite players to represent USA in the World Cup.

Ronaldo had the same look on his face. Then again, if Ronaldo isn't the one scoring the goals he seems disinterested.

That was a long time coming for him. Been over a year for a USMNT goal.

Lot of begging for calls, and whining out of him yesterday. It was great.

Why is it so bad they tied? don't they still get points?

If they'd won they would have qualified for the next round (3 points for a win). But drawing means Portugal or Ghana can overtake them if they don't get something from the Germany game.

I am hoping for a Portugal/Ghana tie, or a Ghana win by one, or a Portugal win by 1, 2, 3.

Yep. That's like having a playoff berth clinched and giving up a Hail Mary to lose.

Ghana played well against us and Germany. Wouldn't shock me to see them play well against a beaten up Portugal squad.

I know we have 70 whatever percent chance of moving on. But Ghana wins something like 3-1, we have to win or tie to move on.

My knowledge of soccer isn't that good. What does everyone think of Michael Bradley? It seems like he missed an easy goal and kinda screwed it up at the end.
