2014 World Cup Discussion Thread

Quote:I think you'd get even more teams looking for draws in group stages if you played to pk's there. The teams who are clearly outclassed know they have a shot if they can pack it in and defend and get to pk's.

Yeah, that's possible. It would make for a very boring group match, up all the way to pk.

Quote:And the Dutch qualified before them, at the same time as Chile did.
Watch out for hazard In belgium.... That kid is no joke with his other chelsea buddies.

Quote:It's why many countries now wont even put in to get an Olympics.   They have to build the athletes village so people can live in it for a few weeks, and then move on with no use for it.

Countries put millions into the events with arenas, stadiums, etc...with not enough return after the Olympics are over.

But the US has the stadiums and infrastructure to host the World Cup tomorrow if we needed to.

Quote:Well another match and another victory for the Dutch who were the first to qualify for the knock out stage and the first group winner.

They're terrific, no doubt about it. Is this their time? Will they get that Championship?

You are right. There was a conversation I heard on the radio regarding this. No stadium would need built whatsoever. Nothing but positives for the U.S. to host.

One other consideration for the USA team in the final group game, if you do get beaten, try not to get beaten too badly. Portugal have a big goal difference to make up, but if you lose by three or four that task becomes a lot easier ! I wondered if Klinnsman might try a more defensive lineup, but defending a lead hasn't gone well in the previous two matches.

Good point. If a goal is given up, it's not time to fold the tent. Got to play out of the funk and fight.

Expect you have to carry all of the costs while receiving none of the revenue.

The main cost of hosting is infrastructure. That is all in place here which offsets so much. Will there still be a loss, probably, but the long term benefits from 1994 are still paying off. Brazil was extrememly stupid and will feel the effects of what they spent for many, many, many years to come. Brazil spent 14 billion compared to South Africa's 3 billion.

I wonder if brazil was spendng like that in anticipation for 2016 rio olympics as well as the WC... They still will have to host a soccer tourney for that as well

Brazil v Chile and Mexico v Netherlands in the next round sound like great games ! The Dutch especially are looking unstoppable at the moment. Are they the favourites to win the tournament at the moment ?

Got to say yes to The Netherlands as favorites right now.

The Dutch look great.

However, anyone watch all of Mexico's matches? They have looked really good also. They're playing very energized, and very solid. Winning 2 matches, and drawing with Brazil (by Ochoa's masterful game) is no easy task.

NED vs Mexico could be a very good/exciting matchup.

Definitely. At one point yesterday afternoon, Mexico and Brazil were tied in goal differential. We were not that far from having a Brazil/Netherlands matchup in the round of 16. Could you have imagined that?
