2014 World Cup Discussion Thread

Quote:there is just nothing else there... i think against germany he was like that because we had to have a more D minded team... if would had been against someone we could have loosened our D up against, i think you have would have seen wonderloski(however u spell that) come in to support dempsey and bradley fall into a more CM/CDM roll instead of trying to do everything in the middle himself.

I think we should have kept Dempsey in the midfield instead of making him the lone striker, but I guess he is still playing well

That is the problem with having no true backup for Altidore... I mean, Johannssen or Wondo or one of these other guys are obviously not getting playing time.  Klinsman must not think they can handle it.

i think johannssen held his own... i just think against port and germany, we couldn't afford to have a guy up there alone who could come back and contribute on D.... any word on jozy's injury... will he possibly be available against belgium?

It's possible different phrases are used in different countries, but generally over here the time added on to the end of each half is called "injury time", "stoppage time" or just "time added on". It's the time the referee decides to add on to the end of each half to take in account stoppages for injuries, substitutions or other breaks in play and is usually no more than 5 mins (although I saw 26 mins once for a really bad injury!)

Extra time is the thirty minutes (fifteen mins each way) added to the end of a game in the knockout stages if a match ends level. After that it's penalty kicks

I think they go for fifteen mins each way so that if the pitch is on a slope or the wind is really sting in one direction, it's fair to both teams. Plus after ninety mins, most players are knackered !

they keep acting like its a possibility and that he only strained his hamstring.  looked like a pull to me and he wont magically heal that quickly.  even if he does try to play, he will re-injure it.

but ESPN and everybody keeps saying he MIGHT return

That might have been in the Dutch league. Dude got knocked out and the ambulance had to get on the field to stabilize the guy on a backboard.

Most likely when Fabrice Muamba had a heart attack and almost died I'd imagine.

Quote:A team loses yet they still advance because another team lost in a separate game. That is wack. Third world game with rules made up by third world brains. I'd rather watch preseason nba, nfl.

True. They should do it like they do in the NFL, where you lose a game and your eliminated from the playoff stage.

The system is much like the NFL's, except done in a much shorter time frame.

You can equate divisions to the groupings in the World Cup.  Everyone plays one another....if there is a tie, it comes down to previous results.

There are ties every year after week 17 in the NFL season.  Just because a team loses in week 17 and has the same record as a team they beat twice during the season doesn't they shouldn't go into the playoffs, does it?

Kind of like the Broncos in 2011. Three straight losses to end the season at 8-8 but still made it to the playoffs.

Quote:1 yellow in two consecutive games = one game suspension

Just a clarification, 2 cumulative yellow cards = one game suspension. It does not have to be in consecutive games. They do not carry over into different tournaments.

In domestic leagues, like the MLS, typically do not give a suspension until 3 or 5 cumulative yellow cards. Depends on the league.

In the US, high school doesn't do this at all. I think college does after 5, but none of my teams have ever had players get even close so idk for sure.

I was being facetious to the troll. But according to him that's how it should be, yet I doubt he'd agree to it in the NFL.

Oh I thought it had to be consecutive.  it doesn't reset after a clean game?

No, but any yellow cards accumulated during group play are cleared in the knockout stage, I think.

And any yellow card you have gets expunged after the quarter finals. So if you get a yellow now and another in the quarterfinal you are suspended for the semifinal. Get a yellow now and another in the semifinal; the first yellow was expunged after the quarterfinal and you won't be suspended for the final or third place game.

Also suspension do carry over to the next international match. So if someone gets sent off in the round of 16 and their team loses, they have to sit out the next game of their national team.

Belgium just does not worry me at all.  They are not that good.  Not even close to Germany imo.
