2014 World Cup Discussion Thread

Quote:Forgive me for thinking that implies that baseball was invented elsewhere. I'll ask you so we can clear up any miscommunication

Where was baseball invented (ie: where was the first rules of "baseball", not rounders or cricket published)?
Once again; baseball wasn't invented, it evolved. And it evolved from a game that had brought over by European immigrants.  Eventually it's rules were standardized and formalized in the USA, much like soccer's rules were were standardized and formalized in England. Formalization is not the same as invention.

Quote:I've already covered that.

"Once again:

Baseball was invented in the United States.

Does the first person to ever kick a ball get credit for inventing soccer? No.

Does the first person to roll a ball get credit for inventing bowling? No.

Does the first person to ever throw a ball in water get credited for inventing water polo? No"

Just because baseball's "ancestors", rounders and cricket, were invented in Europe does not mean that baseball was invented in Europe.
BASEBALL.

WASN'T.

INVENTED.

Quote:What's happening here is basically similar to if I were to walk into your home uninvited, started criticizing your decorating choices and then getting offended when you ask me to leave. This is a thread about soccer, of course you're going to find people who defend the sport in here.

Terrible analogy. The more appropriate analogy would be:

It's like I walked into your home and criticized your decorating choices and rather than just asking me to leave you meltdown with a [BLEEP] story of how I just don't understand and am inferior because of it.

So then you must think that the first person to ever kick a ball should be credited as the "developer" of soccer?

So then you must think that the first person to ever roll a ball should be credited as the "developer" of bowling?

Baseball didn't just "evolve" with a change here or there. In 1845 a new game with vast differences (a diamond-shaped infield, foul lines, the three-strike rule, abolishing the dangerous practice of tagging runners by throwing balls at them) was created. This game was baseball. It was not rounders or cricket.

Baseball was created in the United States.

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/rule11.shtml

"Listed below are the rules of the game which were first adopted and developed by Alexander J. Cartwright on September, 23, 1845. They are often referred to as the Knickerbocker Rules because that is the name the team gave themselves on the day that they ratified these rules. There were twenty rules adopted that day and, believe it or not, these are what has evolved into today's current rules."

Those rules were an entirely new game, not cricket or rounders. Similarities? Sure, but it was a newly invented/created/developed set of rules for a new game.

If you really want to get into who really developed baseball, check out the New York Times article here:

Baseball was created in the United States.
1845 was when those changes were codified. Most likely they had been enforced informally for years beforehand before someone thought of the clever idea of writing them down. Much like how the "Laws of the Game" were codified for soccer in 1863 in England.

The facts remain the same; baseball and cricket evolved from a game that is more similar to rounders than either baseball or cricket. Baseball's modern rules were first codified in 1845 in the US. Most likely these rules had been created years earlier as additions to the game that was already being played which originated from Europe.

The only sport that was developed solely in North America is basketball.

You're still the one in another person's home acting like a complete jerk.

Again, the Knickerbocker rules were not "additions" or "ammendments" to rounders. It was a new game. I've cited several reputable sources stating this. There are a number of books out there that dive into this a lot deeper and I suggest you read one.

It was an old game with new rules. I'd compare it to going from steam locomotives to diesel or electric. Large improvement and a massive leap forward from the old standard but it still originated from something that had been in place for decades.

Lol......... another terrible analogy. Seriously, read a book about the history of baseball because your opinions are pretty off base. We can continue this discussion when you have finished it. It was a new game with a vast differences. Maybe one day you'll figure that out.

Now let's get back on topic. Is Argentina widley considered the best team (or one of the best) in the world? So does that make this draw bad for the U.S.?

No, Argentina falls or stands with Messi. Everything depends on him.

Is that a bad thing? Isn't he like the prime Michael Jordan of soccer?

Think of it like Dan Marino. Fantastic Hall of Fame player, but if you don't have at least some supporting players you'll never win the big game (World Cup or Super Bowl).

BTW, did anyone read Ann Coulter's article about the World Cup? You gotta hope that woman knows she's trolling because it actually hurts my brain trying to think about that much stupidity.

I just Googled it and quit reading after the first paragraph. The one thing I'm amazed about is how quickly Soccer games are over. I use to think they would drag, but now that I'm following it I realize it's completely the opposite. I'll watch a play develop, fail, recover, (I'm making these terms up I think) and before I know it 5 minutes have elapsed. There is no way in heck anyone can say soccer games drag on more than other sports. I love baseball and I love the games within the game, but after an hour of play I will look and be think "wow... it's only the 3rd inning?". Meanwhile, with these last few Soccer games, you are almost begging for additional "stoppage time" because the game seemed to go by too fast.

Do the teams know their match has been moved up a day?
