2014 World Cup Discussion Thread

Quote:Lol... He won't admit he was wrong about the "stepping on the foot" thing. Instead, he tries to pretend you said it wasn't a penalty. DragonFury sure reminds me of another poster that frequents this board.
If Suarez can finaly admit he was wrong, I have faith DF can.

Quote:The history of FIFA refs and bribery is too much to ignore.

From what I've seen the officials here have been pretty good, but there are little things they can do to change the game as well. I'm thinking in general, especially for penalty kick calls, red cards, and possibly to a point yellow cards should get a review.

Someone asked what you would do because of the flow of the game....stop the game. I think everyone can agree that they would want the correct call to be made instead of an error changing the game.
It was me who asked about the flow of the game.

The best thing would be to stop the game straight away, but things in soccer can change quickly. For example, say there is a tackle in the penalty area which team A feel should be a penalty kick, but team B have quickly countered and are now heading towards team A's goal 3 vs 2. Do you stop the play and review the tackle straight away? Say you do stop the play straight away to review, and the tackle is viewed legitimate, Team B have had a possible goal scoring situation denied unfairly.

Quote:Go look through the thread. I never ever said DF didn't say it was a penalty either. Do you just like to make blind assumptions?

I have been clear since the get go in saying it was a penalty myself, and again, the proof is on here for anyone to go see. The video and pictures show his foot wasn't stepped on as well, you can't dance around that.

Doh!

No, it would be similar to hockey.  If a foul is called and the team on the receiving end of the foul has an offensive play, they let it play it out.

It's really not that complex or hard to install either....it all depends on how transparent you want to be.

FIFA have always been against technology in soccer.

They've always held the sentiment that the laws and administration of them should be the same in the world cup as they are in amateur / semi pro leagues around the world.

In reality the decisions that affect a team in the world cup are much bigger, therefore need to be correct more often than those small leagues.

A precedent has been set now though with the introduction of goal line technology so hopefully further technology will follow. Offsides is the next/quickest thing to implement in my opinion

I'm not familiar with hockey so can't comment on how that works. Does a referee throw a flag/marker at the incident similar to football so they can come back to the spot of the foul? Then let the play come to some sort of conclusion? In my example, would the play be considered dead as soon as Team A regains possession?

Quote:I wouldn't say referees at the World Cup are "corrupt", although there has been issues historically.

The problem with world cup officials, is that they are from the 32 participating countries, so how can you expect an official from a small country with a part-time league to perform as well as officials from your big leagues in Europe? Imagine high-school referees in the NFL.. oh that happened.

There no small time refs in the World Cup. FIFA refs are essentially groomed by having the lead consecutively more important matches. The Dutch ref this World Cup may comeffrom the ti y Eredivisie but he has been building a career for years and this year led the CL final.

Not to men tion they have performance reviews for each game and often don't get picked for more games when they perofrm badly.

The FIFA may be corrupt but I doubt any of the refs this World Cup are.

The refs in the World Cup may be on the up and up (but who really knows?) but weren't matches leading up to the World Cup in South Africa fixed?  I was reading countries/mafia in Asian countries were paying countries to let them use their refs.  Surprisingly there were higher amounts of goals scored, and those "companies" won lots of cash in betting on them.

Who knows what they'll find leading up to this World Cup.

Until countries start cracking down on the bribery and going after the people that do it, it will happen because some people are making lots of money off of it.

The referee for the opening game of the World Cup was from Japan. A country with a growing football interest but not deeply rooted, and a league that is definitely not big time. The USA v Belgium game tonight is being officiated by a referee from Algeria I believe. These referees are better referees then I will ever be, but they're now making decisions on the biggest stage with millions watching. A long way away from their normal matches with a few thousand people in the stands

I have no fears that any of the crop of referees here are corrupt, but I'd argue that the stage is too big for a few.

Re: Lebron link above  -> Thanks for the update.  This is a change from what had been previously been reported.  A few days ago is was all about the big 3 taking pay cuts to bring in a much needed shooter and a rebounder.   Things could get quite interesting !!

The fact that we now have 45 pages on the World Cup thread says a lot.  I've always doubted the growth of soccer in the States but this time I think it's real.  The funny thing is Xbox (FIFA) is also helping to ignite the poularity of the sport as kids are really identifying with international players as well.  Pretty cool how this thing is evolving.

The ref in the opening match has been in a World Cup before without many complaints. He led the Brazil-Netherlands match in the quarters in 2010. These have spent plenty of time heading big matches and FIFA watches them very carefully. Of course it's still a lot like NFL scouting; until you get them on the big stage you don't really know how good they are.

My prediction:

Belgium 3

USA 1

we suck.  Don't beat us too badly, Belgium.  Please.

Probably my last comment on referees as I've spoken about then too much already. A lot of their decisions are made based on the league they regularly officiate in.

Leagues that are known for faster, more attacking and often smaller players are more likely to give fouls for slight trips, whereas referees from England & Germany which are historically known for being more physical may not.

Yeah, everyone has different styles.  That Mexico/Netherlands game was pretty physical, and it was actually fun to watch.  Players diving all over and hoping for calls...that ref was having nothing of it.

Quote:I got one mixed up with the other, it happens. Especially since I wasn't sober when debating the first.

And he did step on Robben's foot, though it isn't as bad a foul as that phrase might suggest, it still did happen. Looking around other news and opinion sites I'm far from the only one who thinks the contact was clear and the penalty was correct.

Surely you must realize there is a difference between foots touching and one foot "stepping" on another, right? Contact was clear, but the contact wasn't "stepping". Neither I nor Trav have said it wasn't a penalty, we have merely said there was no "stepping on".

If I place my right foot on the place and put my left foot over and across it so the inside is covering the toes of the right foot and the outside of the left foot is also on the floor I consider that stepped on and that's what happened here.

You, sir, are a piece of work.
