Michael Sam News

(This post was last modified: 09-03-2014, 01:43 PM by The Mad Dog.)

Quote:They also ran segments on how Johnny Manziel spends his time off the field. That offend you?

Really what this all comes back to is a lot of bigots still angry that their bigoted view is becoming less and less accepted by society at large, and the backlash from those who want to feel justified in their bigotry are exhibiting.

Michael Sam is a special player, he's going to get special coverage because of it, that's what sports media is for, covering the exceptional, not the mundane. Never before has there been a gay player (and there have been hundreds of them, no doubt) brave enough to actually live the life they should be allowed to live.

The real shame in all of this isn't Michael Sam's success so far in the league, or the coverage he's gotten, the real shame is the bigotry that's been exposed so far in the NFL's fanship.

Bigots? lol....

Michael Sam is not a special player. He's getting the notoriety for one single reason.,,,and that has nothing to do with his football talent/ ability.

Just because 100% of the people aren't lapping up the media's garbage and towing the line doesn't make them bigots.

But I understand this is how your affiliation thinks.

So if you don't champion the certain media's cause, you're a bigot? Laughing

No one asked for a champion, just not running your mouth and complaining about something you can easily change the channel from would be quite enough.

Are you really trying to defend the fact that ESPN has become almost a tabloid network as opposed to a true sports network?

Michael Sam is not a "special player."  His personal life is what is special.  He's a marginal player.

I don't think this is a case of bigotry.  He's gotten more than a fair shake in the league, and the fans have been for the most part pretty tolerant because at the end of the day it's about football.

If anyone has shown bigotry, it's the network that asks his teammates if they feel uncomfortable showering with him, and ask them what his showering habits are.  Even Jeff Fisher took exception and blasted ESPN for such pointless, sensationalized reporting.  You're defending that?  You're calling people bigots because they think the media has made more of his sexual preference than was necessary?

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Based on ESPNs ratings decline outside of major sporting events, I'd say people are voting with their remotes.  Does that make them bigots because they don't like the direction the network is headed in?

There's still the occasional sporting event they cover well, but they've gotten almost desperate as their ratings have been in decline to find some way to recapture the audience.  The problem is, the harder they try, the more audience they seem to be losing.

Are there any other teams that are hurting at the Pass Rusher position?

What does that have to do with Michael Sam? Sounds like you should have the beef with ESPN and leave Sam out of it.

No, he is a special player. You might argue that his play isn't special, but there's a difference between the player and the play, and as a player, Sam is a special trailblazer, and the coverage of him is quite merited. He's an example to every LGBT youth in the nation.

I don't think this is a case of bigotry.  He's gotten more than a fair shake in the league, and the fans have been for the most part pretty tolerant because at the end of the day it's about football.

The bigotry is on display in this very thread, of people complaining about the kind of sports coverage they're seeing. Any other kind and they have nothing to say. Manziel and his partying? That's fine. Bortles and his hot girlfriend? That's fine, too. Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend? WHOA WHY ARE THEY SHOWING THAT? MY KID MIGHT FIND OUT THAT GAY PEOPLE EXIST AND THAT IT IS IN FACT OKAY!

What does ESPN's choice of coverage have to do with Michael Sam? You think the producers ran it by him first and gave him editorial control? Are you trying to say being asked about showering was the circus?

My prediction is that Michael Sam teams up with Tim Tebow on the SEC Network.  Then, after Johnny Football gets jacked up a few times, he'll join the crew in 2017.   Wouldn't that be an interesting cast (Tebow, Sam, and Manziel hosting gameday on the SEC Network).

I wasn't complaining, just understanding why a team would not want that type of distraction for a fringe of roster type player.

Doesn't really bother me at all, I don't have ESPN and I can easily avoid clicking on articles if I don't want to read them

New to earth?

There was a lot of people that voiced displeasure about the Manziel coverage.

You are making stuff up now to try and support your argument. Oh wait,....what am I saying?.., that goes with that territory....

I hope all in one day that 10 players come out that they are gay.  It will make ESPN explode and we wont hear nearly as much about it.  At this point, talking about it on a daily basis is hurting more than helping, imo.

It is funny that ESPN did the story on his shower habits and they were blasted by Deadspin.  The next day Deadspin did a similar story, but somehow they convinced themselves that it was completely different than the ESPN story and it was ok.

Really, people were calling for Manziel to be cut because too much "media circus"?

I've got to see this. You claimed it, you go ahead and link some posts with it.

Wut??

In my original response to yours I took issue with your claim that no one had a problem with ESPN's coverage of Manziel/ the partying/ et al.

I know lots of people who were sick of that and took issue with it.

You then come out of nowhere and ask for proof that people were saying to cut Manziel over it, Thats a totally different claim and not one that I ever said happened. You're being Li- err, disingenuous again.

The media circus around Manziel is much larger than anything around Michael Sam in spite of Sam being the much more noteworthy player. There are people IN THIS THREAD claiming that Sam's "media circus" is why he's not worth having on an NFL team. However, Manziel's "media circus" is larger and has gone mostly noted only in passing.

So either I'm right, and this is really about bigotry over Sam's sexuality, or there are posts with people saying teams shouldn't have a guy like Manziel because of the "media circus". You claimed that there are people making those kinds of assertions about Manziel, so go ahead and link some of them.

Just one of the Manziel threads that has been made or threads where people voiced concerns over Johnny.

Johnny Manziel is a first round quarterback.

Michael Sam is a 7th round tweener.

They aren't the same situation in terms of the "circus" and being "cut" because of it.

Stop fabricating 'bigotry' to try and make some argument about something that isn't there.
